As a Cubs fan, used to both slow moving games and losing, I thought I could get into soccer.  I was wrong.  I'll keep general tabs on it, and best of luck to all those crazy kids in the US and the not-US.

I don't care whether or not we got the bid, I object to the bribery that is now directly responsible for the deaths of thousands, will probably kill or injure hundreds thanks to the heat, and will likely screw with schedules all over the world if they switch the tournament to winter when the temperatures are less lethal.

If I had my way nobody would bid on any of these tournaments. FIFA and the IOC have too much power. The IOC is learning the limits of its power this round of Olympic bidding. It should happen with FIFA, too. Simply put, the tournaments should be held where the infrastructure already exists. Sure, it would limit it to a few places, but after Brazil and Sochi and the impending disaster in Qatar I think we've reached the end of the time when a country's populace will tolerate throwing billions at one-time-use facilities.

That's like, every international competition for Arsenal supporters. The headlines usually progress something like this:

- England coach looking forward to International Friendly with Bulgaria, says team is ready

- England beats Bulgaria handily, Wilshere sidelined with minor ankle knock

- Wilshere ruled out 6-8 weeks with ligament damage

England coach looking forward to International Friendly with Ivory Coast, may try new formation

Pretty much this. The corruption is everywhere in this deal and it's only going to get worse. And yeah, screwing up the playing season is not the answer. I hope teams protest and don't even show.

----

The song was inspired by a conversation between Manilow and Sussman at the Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, when they discussed whether there had ever been a song called "Copacabana".

The song's lyrics refer to a famous night club, the Copacabana: "at the Copa, Copacabana, the hottest spot north of Havana".

I think they have a  chance to do so. Requires Germany to beat Portugal, though, so that they're content with a draw v. the US. It's been said before, but I think that the US has a good chance to beat Ghana, a middling chance to draw with Portugal (depends entirely upon how Ronaldo is feeling that day), and then hope that Germany is cruising and doesn't need to win the game vs. the US.

Depends entirely upon who is refereeing in the Ghana game, to be honest.

Best case is for Germany to crush Portugal.  It's very possible that whether it's the US or Portugal goes through comes down to goal differential.

I think best case is Germany spanking Portugal in a game with lots of cards. Worst case is a 2-2 draw with no cards.

I'm of the belief the US's best shot is if Germany is already at six points and has nothing to play for, and they're resting players to avoid picking up yellows. it also leaves open the remote dream scenario where the US and Germany are both at 6 points and play essentially a glorified scrimmage.

A draw leaves a likely scenario of the us and Germany both at 4 points and Portugal at 2, meaning nothing is settled and all the teams need to go all out on the last day. That would not end well for the US.

Isn't Ghana's top player injured?
So...   there is a chance...    Jozy has found his scoring touch again, which might help...
Jurgen is a German, so they do have a "chance"...

For the UK Farkers Coral is offering 2/1 for new accounts (max bet £10) that Brazil will be in Yellow for the first game.

You might want to read the small print though if you plan to make a few bets a good way to turn £10 into £30 worht of bets.

The advertisers may end up being the influential on this front.  I don't know what the TV landscape is like in other parts of the world, but those in the USA aren't going to like having to go against American football.
