The death of a tree rat is NOT sad.

Technology has made some progress in tackling the bird problem, but "squirrels are a bit harder," Gauntt said. "They run along those wires with amazing agility. Unfortunately, get just a little claw in there, and they form the connection between two lines, which causes the jump, the arc and the pop."

Pop goes the squirrel 'cause the squirrel goes pop.

FTFA :"The squirrel did not survive," Gauntt said, noting that it's a frequent issue with power supplies around the country.

I'd be worried if it had.

Squirrelpocalypse!  Squirrelmagedon!  Squirrelocaust!  Must be able to come up with a title for a SyFi movie.  I'm thinking Tiffany as the squirrel scientist, Debbie Gibson as the town sheriff, Patty Duke as the sort of off little old lady who's been secretly feeding the squirrels, and Garrett Morris as the town's loveable old homeless dude who's been making meals out of the crispy critters he found around the power station.

I've never heard of this happening in the UK. And we've got the same squirrels.

Someone's doing something differently somewhere....

The outage hit, among other places, the Deschutes County Courthouse, resulting in a postponement until noon of the start of the Luke Wirkkala murder trial, on a day when the defendant is expected to take the stand in his claim the fatal shooting of David Ryder was in self-defense.

CSB time. When I was in middle school a squirrel ran into a power transformer which knocked out power to the school, so we got the day off.

Me and some friends got together and decided to hold a honorary funeral for it.  We stood around in a circle and each took turns talking about how the squirrel had affected us and had changed us for the better. Then we buried a cigar box with a picture of a squirrel in it.

Well, right there's a comment from someone who has never had a squirrel chew its way into his attic.

Squirrel causes fire that damages New Bern Home

Squirrels chew through 2x4 in attic

Squirrel causes $300,000 in Damages

Neighbor had a squirrel chew through one of the eaves on his house to get into the attic.  After getting the squirrel out and repairing the damage, he went on a personal crusade to rid the neighborhood of the evil menace (using a few live traps with peanut butter bait).  LIttle did he realize that the squirrel population at large seeks an even density.  No matter how many he removed (he was up over a hundred last I heard), more would just move in from somewhere else.

/didn't help that there was a nice, BIG Black Walnut tree a couple of doors down

People in the UK have absolutely zero ground to stand on when judging others
