Does this mean my friend's cat is the world's oldest cat now? She is 22.

24 years?  Everyone knows a cat who lived longer than this.

Nope, my wife's parents have a cat that's nearly 24 herself. Crabby old girl, that cat, but I like her.

"She is partial to the odd takeaway. We sometimes give her a bit of KFC chicken, fish and chips and even the odd bit of kebab meat," Jacqui West told Guinness World Record last month.

That's because she is in crippling pain from arthritis and has been most of a decade.   Its enough to make one grumpy.

Is the cat at the stage of I don't give a fark like my friend's cat. She will just climb on you and steal whatever you are drinking or eating regardless of what it is.

No, she's still nice enough to 'ask', but it's a given she's getting a cut of whatever you're eating. She's 23 and most of a year, she can eat what she damn well wants to.  She still likes going outside every once in awhile to hunt. She still purrs gigantic when the right person pets her. We get along really well.

Mean to reply to this in my last post. Her doc says given he age, the level of arthritis is remarkably low. She's still pretty agile and speedy. Can still hop fairly high. Her one big issue is that she's completely deaf.

Everyone's been expecting her to die for years now. We joke that she lives out of spite.

My cat made it to 20 and all but the last couple of days were good ones. If he'd gone 24 he'd still be with me. Sigh.

LOL...reminds me of John Travolta's dog in that movie he did with Robin Williams.  "How old is that dog"

My parents had a small female cat make to 22-23 before she was put down. Kidneys shrunk to nothing.

I wish someone had told me something about cat lifespans the moment I saw an abandoned kitten at the back door of my workplace six years ago.

Oh, well. My monochrome friend is a good little six-year-old cat. He gets to roam outside, make cat pals, sleep inside and visit the vet once a year.

My friend spoils that cat to the point he buys her like her own human food to eat. If he goes to Arbys for a roast beef he buys one for her. I think she knows it too, and uses it to her advantage. I think that is why she will climb up on anyone and steal their food. She is still pretty agile for her age too, but is skinny. Cats are really resilient when they are old for some reason.

Pretty sure the oldest cat is older than 24, it's just that nobody keeps proof.

The sad part is it OD'ed on high purity catnip. It runs through a cat's nine lives like a 5 alarm fire in Cheektowaga.

Yea, I had a cat that was older when it died.  I have always found Guinness records strange.  Should be: "Oldest cat that has an owner who enjoys browsing Guinness."

I figure they hit the top 5% of the bell curve when finding these things... just round up a bit to get a reasonable guess.

Apparently a few people have reading comprehension issues.  This cat was not the "oldest" cat ever.  It was the oldest LIVING cat.  Big difference.  Of course there is possibly a cat currently living somewhere in the world who is 24 years or older, but Guinness doesn't know about it.

Without "reading comprehension issues" , there would be no Fark comments section.

The oldest cat ever, as far as we know as you point out, was Creme Puff who died at the age of 38 (1967-2005).

Not anymore, now it's dead. If the title depended on it being alive I guess that means it is a totally unremarkable cat corpse now.

The British like to believe they have the oldest, biggest, fastest etc. OF ALL TIME even when it can be proven otherwise.

But this reminds me of a book I read where an old lady was convinced her cat was going on 26. Even got the local newspaper to write a story on him. The trouble was, the cat would keep dying when she was away, and her son, who was pet sitting, would scramble to find a replacement that looked just like him. They were on the third cat at that point.

Guiness should be prosecuted for revealing the existence of the Cat Longevity Database maintained by the NSA. Cuz that's the only place you're going to find out who the oldest living cat is.

Did Guinness even bother to ask anyone else if they had a cat that was older?

2014-06-12 09:45:39 AM
My older cat is at least 17, could be older.  We thought we got her as a kitten from the animal shelter but it turns out that she's just really dainty and has never grown any bigger.  So she could be even older than that.  24 doesn't seem at all unlikely.

Guinness should just ask the vet offices for their record cat and sort the results.

One of my grandma's cats lived to be around 24. We're not sure, since he was a stray. When he was getting really sick, he somehow managed to get out of my aunt's house and she never found him... the poor thing probably crawled away to find a nice secluded place to curl up and sleep one last time. It doesn't matter if they're old and you're expecting it, it's still a stab to the heart. My aunt would've really liked to bury him, at least. She was the last of her mother's cats to survive.

2014-06-12 10:24:13 AM
24 is nothing. The cat that I had growing up still lives on a old pet farm upstate. He's got to be 35 by now.

In all seriousness we had a cat make it to 23 years old, and we don't know how old the cat actually was as we first took the cat in when it was fully grown.
