and he told the paper no thoughtful society would allow people to go hungry.

I think I found the problem.

2014-06-11 06:54:10 PM
The Valparaiso resident told The Post-Tribune on Tuesday that his comments were simply hyperbole, and he told the paper no thoughtful society would allow people to go hungry.

"I was not trying to hurt anybody's feelings," Johnston said. "I saw the opportunity to say something. I think a lot of the poor have no way out, and there's no motivation to improve your position. It's like training a child, either you enable them or force them out at some point."

What's that old saying about any publicity is good publicity?

Soooooooooooo ..... I'm thinking. Did he ever look into how the Native American's lived before Columbus came? Has he considered that people were out subsisting or living in the Stone Age and scratching out a living on the land around them with periods of starvation?

Is Buckminster a life long member of the Education Industry?

Thank you arrogant farkstick politicians insisting on running their own social media accounts for providing this unprecedented window into what is really believed.

I wish politicians would stick to their guns on this.  If people are so bad at surviving that they end up withering and dying, I don't much mind them doing so.

So now poor people are the equivalent of untrained children?

Keep digging that hole, dickbag.

FTFA: "For almost three generations people, in some cases, have been given handouts," Johnston said during the discussion. "They have been 'enabled' so much that their paradigm in life is simply being given the stuff of life, however meager."

I'm glad to see he takes such a strong principled stand against corporate welfare and the bloated distortion of the U.S. military into a jobs program for the underclass and siphoning off economic growth.

I used to be a Republican.  Then my party went pants-on-head stupid, and I've had the luxury of looking at my side of the isle with a critical eye over this past decade.  So let me let you in on a little secret:

In the Republican party, you are a gestalt.  Everyone has to embrace the "narrative".  You never know who writes the "narrative" or what the goal of the "narrative" is, but you absolutely have to follow it.  If you do not, you are a RINO.  There is no room for negotiation or debate.  You obey under threat of your own party spending money to primary you out.

In the Democratic party, people can disagree.  They can debate.  There's an overall trend, like a "narrative", but nobody's forced to adhere to it under threat of "RINOhood".  There is no Democratic version of RINO.   Their overall theme appears to be a secular form of humanism.  "We are all in this together."

Is it really any wonder why so many of us Republicans have left our party?  I wanna know who wrote the "Narrative."  I want to read the complete "Narrative".  I want to be able to argue the "Narrative" on a point-by-point basis without being politically branded a heretic.  I want to know what special interest groups fund my party, by how much, and what they hope to gain from it.  Laid out plainly.  It'll never happen, of course, which is why I can't support them any more.

Why don't they just stop being poor?

2014-06-11 10:39:21 PM
``I wish to be left alone,'' said Scrooge. ``Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there.''
``Many can't go there; and many would rather die.''
``If they would rather die,'' said Scrooge, ``they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Besides -- excuse me -- I don't know that.''
``But you might know it,'' observed the gentleman.
``It's not my business,'' Scrooge returned. ``It's enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people's. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!''

Fuller had nothing to say about hunter-gatherers. It was his firm belief that with the proper engineering efficiencies and minimization of waste in various production processes, the industrial economy of his time (around 1920-1960) could fully support the human species in a comfortable and enlightened existence. Any want or inadequacy was due to political shenanigans and rent-seeking behavior.

Can't say he's right, exactly, but I can't say he's wrong.

Oh, you mean that issue that's been going on for ten years that liberals like Rachel Maddow have been vainly trying to get people to pay attention to and that only became an issue when the godly troop-loving Republicans realized they could make political hay off of it for the 2014 mid-terms?

It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants: who as they grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.
I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom a very great additional grievance; and, therefore, whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these children sound, useful members of the commonwealth, would deserve so well of the public as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the children of professed beggars; it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a certain age who are born of parents in effect as little able to support them as those who demand our charity in the streets...
