Thank god that I:

1) Know Spanish and therefore
2) Will watch Univision for my World Cup coverage instead

I do not care for Mr. Landon Donovan.

2014-06-11 03:24:09 PM
Couldn't be worse than Twellman, could he?

COULD HE?!?!

I get that people were dismayed that Donovan didn't make the team, and it will be very weird seeing the USMNT take the field without the man who has been the face of US soccer for nearly two decades, but let's not get carried away.

nice fail submittard

"ESPN discussing how the great Landon Donovan would have won them the World Cup "

didn't know ESPN qualified, or was a nation, for that matter.

Look, the US will be three-and-done. Pack it up and see you in '18.

We survived the David Beckham debate. We'll survive this.

2014-06-11 04:57:29 PM
I have a simple solution to that:  Don't watch BSPN.

Dear American TV,

cover the sports... and the best teams in those sports.  stop hyping the flag.

same goes for the olympics, and rugby.

Portugal or Germany will stumble. The last US game will have consequence!

Very few American people were dismayed, most of them don't know who he is, a few here can disagree all they want but he's not even close to a household name.

About the only thing people in the states can tell you about USA soccer is that chick took her shirt off that one time.

Haters gonna hate. I'll watch univision or British streams if I have to.

I wasn't upset. I get how some people were, though. I don't agree with getting upset, and I think Klinsmann is trying to look at the bigger picture - and down the road. We're not going deep with or without Donovan and he's definitely not going to be playing in another four years.

We would be better off with Mia Hamm

It's a rough group.  I'm not even sure Germany makes it out.

But the United States is clearly capable of being the absolutely worst team in the tournament, as they were two times ago.

On another note, this is the fourth World Cup thread of the day and all of them combined have less comments than the thread about the "Redskins name" commercial. Just sayin'

2006?  They were 25th of 32...

Not that it's much better, but the last time they were ranked as the worst team in the tournament was 1998

The all-time U.S. leader in both goals and assists will preview and analyze the tournament, focusing on the U.S. team's three opening round matches: June 16 vs. Ghana; June 22 vs. Portugal; and June 26 vs. Germany. Last place in the field, over the years:

Uruguay 1930: Mexico
Italy 1934: United States
France 1938: Dutch East Indies
Brazil 1950: Bolivia
Switzerland 1954: South Korea
Sweden 1958: Mexico
Chile 1962: Switzerland
England 1966: Switzerland
Mexico 1970: El Salvador
West Germany 1974: Zaire
Argentina 1978: Mexico
Spain 1982: El Salvador
Mexico 1986: Canada
Italy 1990: United Arab Emirates
United States 1994: Greece
France 1998: United States
Korea/Japan 2002: Saudi Arabia
Germany 2006: Serbia and Montenegro
South Africa 2010: North Korea

Basically, CONCACAF is really really bad at this whole World Cup thing. Like real bad.

To be fair, outside of a few teams, every country in the world is really bad at the whole World Cup thing.

And we both know that if Carmelo Anthony stubs a toe they'll ditch soccer coverage in a heartbeat. I'm excited about the World Cup. I'm just not going to pretend it will get more coverage than NFL training camp.

I mock ESPN in a lot of headlines but their soccer coverage throughout qualifying to now has been great. The Inside series is well done, the 30 for 30. They've been sly with it because if they can stir up a bigger and bigger fan base, that's more money in their pockets as well. Having every single game televised and on the App is going to be amazing.

WatchESPN. Whether you get ESPN3 and/or all of the ESPN networks through the app depends on who your ISP/Cable providers are. All of the WC matches will be on ESPN3. If your ISP is on this list you are in luck.

Considering the ratings for the US games in 2010 blew away the Stanley Cup and most of NBA finals. I think people know a little more about soccer than you give them credit for.

I'm ready to yell at my tv/phone/tablet during every game. Only a soccer fan for about 8-9 years (i.e. watching other games besides US Mens & Women Games)  I dont have nearly the hate for Alexi and Twellman. They are tolerable. I love NBCSN EPL coverage and commentators both in US and UK and wish they were doing the WC. But anything is better than Fox Sports with Gus Johnson and Erik Wynalda.
