No it was fully yesterday and there were already 2 people trying to join.  I think we would need to expand it to 80 considering it was slammed at 50.

Want to know why Soccer isn't popular in the US?

There is ZERO chance that the US Goverment would allow a foreign company on our shores and NOT make them pay taxes. You bring a world cup here and it could be popular.

there was a WC here, in '94 I believe. Freshman year in college. I went to a game in Dallas, Saudi Arabia and Sweden - swedenden won 3-0 IIRC. Martin Dalin was their star, he had a good match. It was a lot of fun. Not sure how the taxes went.

We need the Tiger Woods of US soccer for things to really takeoff. What would have to happen is someone who could be an NFL/NBA caliber athlete foregoes those sports and becomes the next Ronaldo.

That was supposed to be Freddy Adu, but he got too much too fast and now's a has-been.

My hope is that the NFL concussion backlash continues to such a degree that soccer becomes a legitimate outlet for some of these guys.

It'll take time. For me the key is parents who have supported teams for much of their lives taking their children along to games. Organic growth.

The demographics are behind it, the social and cultural changes are behind it. Given recent issues wrt concussion/injuries etc the law may be behind it sooner or later.

A US born superstar or two wouldn't hurt either.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter on a global scale if the US buys in or not

Not sure why people keep making this statement.  The top 2 players in the world are on teams that are not projected to win the world cup, and you've got players like Ibrahimovic and Bale sitting at home.  People like Tiger Woods because he was so dominant, and the US is not going to win with just one of those players.

That's not the argument I'm making. If we had an athlete so transcendent that people start tuning in to watch his Arsenal (hehe) matches, people who never would have thought of soccer will start kicking the ball around.

I think that this is actually one of the problems with it. If the US develops a transcendent soccer star, he'd promptly get signed to go play in England or Spain or something. Not only would his games be on at weird hours of the day, but he'd be playing for some other country's title. Americans have a tendency to want to know that they're watching people playing for "The Most Important Championship In That Sport"; that works for leagues that are mainly American in focus so we have those leagues here (baseball, American football, basketball, hockey) but not so much for a sport in which a nation's league champion just gets shuffled into a continental playoff*.

Sure, it might lead to some English team getting more airtime in the US, but I still don't think that would cause some sort of soccer revolution in the US. That would basically require the USMNT to make serious noise at the World Cup alone. Granted, a transcendent American player would certainly allow that to happen.

*: I'm assuming that not many people care about or are even aware of the FIFA Club World Cup, please correct me if I'm wrong

I'm in in your lovely tournament thingy. According to my predictions, Australia are going to have a -12 goal difference. Yeah. Also, I'd gone through the groups the other day and who I thought would make the knock-out section. But after my predictions, I think those are also all wrong. HOORAY!

I dunno, England vs Germany in the semifinals and then England vs the US would be pretty shiatstormy.  To say nothing of US vs Russia, US vs Mexico and US vs Iran.

funny you should mention that, but had the US not had a stonewall penalty denied against (a piss poor) Germany, and England actually went after Brazil after Ronaldinho had been sent off, you could have been looking at the USA vs South Korea and Turkey vs England as the semi-finals.... and a possible USA vs England final.

That's easy, have the U.S. beat Brazil in the final instead of leaving the tawdry work to the Poms in the semis. Nothing says "oh dear God no" like a second Maracanazo.

LeBron would struggle at either position.  6'9" and 260 lbs does not work in soccer.  You have to be able to run fast non-stop for 90 minutes.  Center backs not quite so much, but still.   LeBron could be perfect for goalkeeper, but I don't see it with the midfield or defense stuff.

Deion Sanders on the other hand?  Yeah, he could play left back and be absolutely terrifying.  Similarly, I think Kam Chancellor would make a pretty good center back.

Allen Iverson is the one that always piqued my interest.  He'd be a perfect #10.  He'd be like Ozil but WAY faster and quicker.
