Mexico is a democracy, and thus not "third world."  China is communist, and incredibly wealthy along with having very restrictive birth policies, so again not "third world."  Thailand could be considered third world; military juntas aren't exactly the most advanced systems of governance.

Actually, the original meaning was a lot different.  During cold war times the first world was the U.S. and its allies, the second the USSR and its allies, and the third a diverse group of nations who did not ally with either, from Ghana to Brazil to Sweden.

Pregnancy-related deaths helped put Michigan's maternal mortality rate in the bottom fifth among states. One in three pregnancies in the city is terminated.

Sorry, Republican journalism student, but a terminated pregnancy is not an infant mortality.  The word for 'spirit' in most languages is the same as 'breath'. Same in English, as 'inspiration' means both 'to be filled with an external source' and 'breathe in'.  If it's never breathed, it's not a person.

In the US and Canada, all births are counted when calculating infant mortality.

In most other countries (including European countries), births below 1-2 pounds are not reported as live births, and their deaths do not contribute to their infant mortality statistics.

Worse then Detroit?

I'm afraid so.

It has also been common practice in several countries (e.g. Belgium, France, Spain) to register as live births only those infants who survived for a specified period beyond birth. Those who did not survive were placed in a category often known as "false stillbirths" or they were completely ignored for registration purposes.

http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/86/6/07-043471/en/

This is why it may be utterly useless to compare any US infant (or overall) mortality rates to those in other countries.  We simply aren't counting by the same metric.

You have the data on infant mortality by state from Headso's post. Why not graph it against the percentage of time each state's legislature was run by Democrats over the past couple* of decades?

Surely, if you believe the causal relationship you're implying, you're not afraid to post such a graph?

*Since, as we all know, the Republican party of 50 years ago in the south is not the Republican party today.

If you bothered to read (and understand) the article, you would realize the article does in fact deal with infant mortality and intentional termination as two separate issues.  The infant mortality rate in Detroit, which refers to deaths between birth and one year of age, is higher "than any American city, a rate higher than in China, Mexico and Thailand."  The average infant mortality rate for the period of the study being reported on was 13.5%.   http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140130/LIFESTYLE03/301300005

That is completely separate from this issue of how many pregnancies in Detroit are intentionally terminated.  According to the linked article, that number has moved from 27% to 37%, compared to a national average of closer to 17%.

In other words, the article is NOT confusing abortions with infant mortality.  You either misread, misunderstood, or are intentionally obfuscating.

Your definitions of Third World are interesting as the original definition has nothing to do, as nekom pointed out, with being a democracy or not.

If I am reading that correctly the study seems to be saying that the US numbers are inflated by 30% over certain European countries but could be as low as 20% when compared to others. That still puts us kinda on the high side.

Then petition the critters who supposedly represent you to stop cutting funding to family planning clinics and to stop promoting "abstinence-only" sex education in schools. While you're at it, tell every guy you know to either keep it in his pants or wrap his willy when he does the nasty. Oh, and also, what's the more responsible choice: abortion or yet another child being born into the cycle of poverty?

Is anyone surprised that a US city that's disproportionately populated by the poor has horrible health stats?
Pretty much anyone with two nickles to rub together has long-since left the city.
That's going to skew any naive study of the resulting population.
