DAR: The proud hunter with his kill ...... asshole......
syrynxx: They arrested him in case that ignited emotions? Shouldn't they have waited to see if it actually ignited emotions or not?
UberDave: "The killing sparked intense protests in the college town of Boulder, where the shooting sparked prayer vigils and at least one tribute song. "It should have sparked a BBQ instead.
Ihaveanevilparrot: Yet another cop that thinks he can get away with anything cuz he's a cop.
fnordfocus: Ihaveanevilparrot: Yet another cop that thinks he can get away with anything cuz he's a cop.He hasn't been sentenced yet. His accomplice got sixty days home detention and kept his job. Do you really think Carter will get worse?
fusillade762: Carter argued that the elk had become dangerously domesticated and aggressive.Aren't those two states sorta mutually exclusive?
astro716: The case here was about more than an elk, it's about a cop unplugging his patrol car GPS, hunting within city limits, shooting toward houses, and not reporting his shooting to his dispatch. He was a dirty cop, and if he didn't go down on this he'd go down for some more Training Day-like shiat.
question_dj: Now, why the hell is sending a cop to prison a "complex issue?"
Ihaveanevilparrot: Guy is an asshole, but prayer vigils? For an Elk? It's friggin meat. Lets start having prayer vigils for the millions of slaughtered cows. Weirdos.Yet another cop that thinks he can get away with anything cuz he's a cop. Sadly, he probably would have had better luck getting away with shooting a person. Fish and game, pretty much in any state, doesn't mess around with poaching, no matter who you are. He's lucky he didn't shoot something federally protected or regulated.
Ambivalence: Boulder is weird. You can kill a person and no one will ever catch you (see Jonbennet Ramsay) but you kill an elk and you can kiss your future goodbye.
fusillade762: Aren't those two states sorta mutually exclusive?
skinink: Jeebus H Christ, there's more people upset about a cop killing an elk in this thread than you would see in a thread about a cop killing a person. The elk is even personalized. Poor elk, minding his own business eating beneath a crabapple tree. Give me a break. I would bet this same cop who shot the elk has complaints against him from citizens alleging abuse yet nothing happened. It would be interesting to find out what's in his personnel file.
Ex-Texan: That "domesticated" elk reminds me of a story a coworker told of going on his first buffalo hunt. They supposedly had a guarantee of a kill, and when they got out on the ranch, the buffalo just ambled up to the hunters, expecting to be fed or petted. My friend said it gave him bad dreams for weeks, having to back up from the animal, so he could raise his rifle and dispatch it. Here in Albuquerque, we have lots of hunters going for elk. Only a 6 hour drive or so to Denver. Right up I-25.
