So according TFA the foster care system is rife with kids being turned into prostitutes. I think I figured out what they can do besides a media campaign to stop it.

/hint: better screening of foster patents and an overhaul if the system.

Yeah that sounds like a very simple and cheap thing to do.  Good thing social services have such an abundance of funding in the US

I don't understand what Subby is going for here. Are you making fun of Florida because they have a sex trafficking problem? If so, better make fun of pretty much every populated location. Are you implying that forced sex workers aren't slaves? Are you making fun of a website for commandeering a well known phrase in hopes of drawing attention to a serious issue?

I realize that is snark, but in this situation a media campaign is akin to putting a band aid on a sucking chest wound.

If you have recognized an area of your social services is directly contributing to human trafficking, then by god do something other than "Tell a friend if your foster dad is pimping you out".

Dammit, the yelling is bugging me.  At least use a gag or properly soundproof the room.

More seriously, I'm glad that the issue is receiving real attention.  It's something that I actually think SWAT and police forces are great uses for, as opposed to going after voluntary drug users.

picturescrazy: I don't understand what Subby is going for here.

A simple mash-up of various memes that didn't quite sync is my vote.

And yes, it's a global problem.  The USA doesn't nearly have the problem that many other countries have.

The organization's web site was the least informative of any I've ever seen.  Two pages?  For an entire social media campaign that's supposed to have a positive effect on today's youth?

There's one quote from a single girl who got "tricked" (is that the current vernacular for "prostituted?"), another quote from a dude who's supposedly pimping, and a link to a 1m20s video that showed some people putting up a roadside display of mugshots of girls who got arrested for prostitution.

Is that the best they could do?  Some pictures in a video and two whole quotes?  Is that what we call a "social media campaign" these days?

He's making fun of adults who are completely tone deaf to the people they're trying to help, and as a result, picking something that is going to totally belly flop. Jesus, you can't insult the kids' intelligence then expect them to beat a path to your door. This 'FBomb' thing is stupid, regardless of the intentions behind it.

vpb: My Tea Party friends tell me that the 13th amendment to the Constitution is unconstitutional.

Nah, most of the Tea Party accepts the 13th Amendment, It's the 14th that they want to screw with.  OTOH they'll just claim it is "government bureaucrats imposing excessive regulations on job creators in the service industry that stifles economic growth and ships jobs Americans could do overseas." (Rushbo is tired of having to travel to the Dominican Republic for underaged hookers) or it's part of "the self-esteem movement that tells kids they shouldn't have to learn the value of hard work." (even Rushbo can run short on his viagra prescriptions he gets under an alias, and that means hard work for the hookers)

Sorry to sound so mean, but it's just the plain Truth. As long as governments continue to try to force sexual morality down our throats, there will be an Underground that skirts around it.

Remember the old commercial with the mechanic talking about changing your oil "You can pay me now or you can pay me later?"  We pay several times what we've "saved" in underfunding programs for kids on the back end when they end up in prison not to mention the cost of the damage done in theft, violent crime, dysfunctional familes etc.

Datanerd: Vice had an article (NSFW language) on a teen sex worker in a series of foster homes, and how sex work was better than the foster home system.  It was...disturbing.

Yeah, but that detracts from the core problem. Not every kid in foster care lives like that. Movies and TV Shows misrepresent the problem with foster care.

Most of the time, it's not that the parents aren't "screened well". The problem lies in the transient life of a foster kid. Always an outsider, always getting shuffled from one house to another, already carrying baggage from whatever situation resulted in you being in foster care, and already quite often making bad choices and repeating bad habits. The foster parents don't understand what you're going through, often anything they do is just seen as 'The Man' trying to shut the kids down. On top of that, they end up feeling unwanted, since they always seem to get moved as if there's something wrong with them. To top it off, teens are so unlikely to get adopted by people, it's a joke. There are people out there who want to adopt older kids, but they are pretty rare. On top of it all, you're staring down the barrel of aging out every day. Once you turn 18, the foster parents are under no obligation to do anything, so that just adds to the general sense of not having anywhere to be that you fit.

As a result, foster kids get into a lot of trouble, as the people they encounter on the street SEEM to care about them and want to make them a part of their extended family.

Personally, I enjoyed foster care, but then again, my home life was horrendous.

That the problems are not simply that there needs to be "better screening". That's not why kids run away, do drugs, etc. "Overhauling the system' also doesn't fix the alienation that the kids feel on a daily basis.

You're absolutely correct. Part if the alienation comes from your "friends". They may go home to mom or dad or both. You go home to someone who sees you as a check from the government. You are always in the way or not good enough.

You're missing the point entirely. They know what F-bomb means. They use that because they know it'll draw attention to their site. The friend thing is just something they have to justify using the phrase in the first place. You're making this a lot harder on yourself than it has to be.

You didn't answer shiat. You said "fix the alienation".

That's not a solution.

How about criminal charges for abusing the kids? How about fraud charges for using the monthly checks for drugs? How about counseling for the kids? How about mandatory drug tests for foster families?

Those are farking solutions. " Make them feel better" is bullshiat

I didn't suggest a fix. I pointed out that your "solution" wouldn't fix the problem because it is just a fall back people use when they want to sound like they know what the problem is. Until they address the root of the actual issues, nothing will be solved. "Make them feel better" is EXACTLY the solution, since feeling like shiat is why they act out in the first place.

I say this as someone who has been orphaned, adopted, placed in a Children's Home, a psych ward, a hospital ward for "problem children", another psych ward, a group home, had the adoption by my adoptive parents severed when the people in charge figured out that I wasn't th e actual pathological liar in the scenario, then ended up in a foster home.

So yeah, I know what kids in foster care are subjected to, having lived with well over 100 kids in various stages of the program for the last 6 years of my childhood when my adoptive parents first dropped me in an institution. Before that, I'd just dealt with the adoption process...
