Which is strange, because every time I see the Thomas Kinkaide store at the mall, it's empty and the dude working inside looks like he's on the verge of crying.

Back when my wife and I first bought my house, my mother was absolutely obsessed with buying us a
'nice' painting to hang in our dining room, and she absolutely wanted to spend more than $300 on a
Kinckade.

While we appreciated the gesture, we kept trying to dissuade her because, frankly, we didn't want her to
spend that kind of money for a painting that really didn't match our chosen colour scheme for the room
because it was too washed out.

Fortunately, while were out shopping with her at a flea market, we found a Kinkade style painting that we
absolutely loved in very vibrant style that was only $30, and we let my mother buy that instead.

In hindsight, it was the best purchase decision we made for home decor.

I forget where I read this theory first.

But if you look at the windows of any Kinkade painting, they're absolutely glowing.

Just think about the raging fire that's about to bust through the walls and roof and consume the entire scene.

Ugh.  My family lives in a little town right outside Placerville.  His crappy paintings are all over town there, in every business you go into.  I got a Kincaide calender for Christmas last year, luckily early enough to give it to a sweet little old lady I know.

I'm more of a Maxfield Parrish fan.

I'm very religious. I could be wrong but his paintings had nothing to do with religion. I know they put quotes from the Bible underneath the paintings but no one is discussing those.

Well, I don't know art, but I know what I don't like. My comment was more a reply to who was the bigger scam artist. To me Lakey's "art" looks like finger painting done by kids at summer camp. JHMO   At least Kinkade's stuff makes for challenging jigsaw puzzles. ;b

A good Pollock looks like a painter's drop cloth. A bad Pollock looks like a painter's drop cloth after he barfed on it. A really bad pollock has a "fishy" smell and the flesh has a greasy sheen. The difference is very subtle.

Exactly.  Some of the greatest art is overtly religious, and although I'm not religious, I still find it inspiring.  Kincaide's stuff is different: it's sentimental nonsense.  If it makes people feel better in a scary world, that's fine, but it should be placed in some category that includes teddy bears, comfy blankets and nice cups of tea, rather than being considered "art."

You're going to have to explain that to Clement who died in AD 215 and suggested engraving seals with doves or fish as a symbol of Christianity.
