You know... on my gen-1 ipod Touch, I could drop a pin at my current location on Maps.  It seems like something that is still doable on iOS, right?  I'll go check.

I have an app on my Palm Pilot for that.

It's called notepad.

Couldn't you just remember where you put one of your most expensive purchases?

...and of course:   https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/6015842?hl=en

storage.googleapis.com

Not to mention the many apps that simply mark the location whenever Bluetooth disconnects.

Not at all.  The Apple tracking thingy is hip and cool.

They already have "Find My iPhone" for that.

If it's like Apple maps, it will direct you to about 5 states away

I keep looking at the calendar and asking, "Shouldn't we be better at this stuff by this time?" I just hate the redundancy of recreating the same apps without seeming to move forward very much.

First thing I thought of, Bravo.  Someone get the lights.

You could also take a picture that would tell you the location.

I thought  every smartphone OS has at least five apps that can do that.

Yes. Even Blackberry.

Are people missing tricylceracer and haemaker's posts here?

Google Now/Google Search is doing this automatically. So, you go through your daily life, arrive, park, depart until that one time in a few months that you're not sure where you parked. Maybe a big outdoor mall and you've been hiking around for two hours, whatever. Fire up Google Now, and there is your parking location. You don't have to do anything other than to park with your phone in the car.
