Nix Nightbird: Using a mouse to play a game means you're hunched over a desk with your face a few inches from a monitor. Using a game controller for PC games means you're able to recline on your couch and enjoy the big TV... yes, you can use your PC on the big TV with a mouse, but it's a real pain in the ass to use a mouse on a sofa without having to hunch over a table. Try using mouse & keyboard while reclining, with your feet up.

Nix Nightbird: The mouse is a crappy way to control a game, and I say this as someone who has been gaming on everything-- PC included-- since PCs were invented. I say this as someone who built my own gaming rig.

For some game types, it is absolutely the best control scheme currently going.   For FPS and MMO games, the KB/M setup is going to be king for a very long time.

In fact, for any game where the positioning of your avatar or camera view is not limited to 2d, it's superior, as the speed of your camera or player rotation isn't fixed.   The same holds true for any game that doesn't have tab targeting.  The accuracy just pales in comparison to what a mouse offers.

Other game types?  Not so much.  A driving game with a mouse is generally a terrible experience.  Most 2d / platform games feel far better with a gamepad.

PC Skyrim: Stick disc in. Configure. Install. Connect to server. Verify key code. If server is up, you may now play.
Console Skyrim: Stick disc in, start playing.

Console Skyrim: Finish game. Sell or trade game in for something new.

What's a "disc"?  My Skyrim was a digital download from steam.  And while you're right that I can't resell it, I get most games at deep discounts during holiday sales and the digital bits are still shiny and new, vs a used dvd for a console that may or may be dinged up.  Also, PC graphics >>>>>>>>>>>>> console.  Also, mods.

Also:

I set up a special account to buy Diablo on so that I could sell it, or at least share with friends when I got tired of it.  After playing the demo though, I didn't see any reason to buy it.  I considered using the same method with Skyrim, but didn't end up buying that either.  I would to that again next time I planned to buy a major title.

The graphics and input commands are really, really crude, though. Anything more complex than Snake would be a huge pain.

Copperbelly watersnake: People finish Skyrim?

My thoughts exactly. I play it on xbox (so no mods other than official dlc, boooo!), and I've been playing literally for years. Hell, I still play Oblivion! Not all the time, mind you, but sometimes I just need to get my mead swilling, dragon killing, enemy shouting, ax swinging, epic fantasy fix.

And unlike competitors, in Skyrim I can usually be swinging my ax into someone's face within 30 seconds of the game loading. I can't wait until the next Elder Scrolls!

Isn't the online one out or coming out soon?  I know that's probably not what you're talking about.  The trailer is cool but I swore off MMOs after I quit wow.  Pause and save buttons only for me.

The future of video games is probably another couple years away as companies learn to make use of the new hardware. Right now, it seems to be mostly shinier versions of existing franchises.

The Elder Scrolls appeal will not translate into an MMO. At least not for me. I've been an avid fan since Morrowind and in every game so far the PC is cast as the  onlyhero who can save the world. It helps set the mood, and the mood makes it immersive, and that immersion makes it unique.

Take away the immersion and the whole world crumbles into another swords and sorcery clone. I'm incredibly unhappy that they're taking the series that way, and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a followup that doesnt suck (Summer Isles maybe?).

How come consoles don't have the option to control with a mouse/keyboard.  I would think this would bring in more converts, plus they could have more officially licensed peripherals.

Because thumbstick players get their asses handed to them in FPS games.

aaand I just read today that Rockstar formally announced the release of the PC GTA5 will be this fall!  Oh and its also coming out for the slightly newer but still classically outdated consoles too.

Funny, but honestly it probably should have been held onto and released on those machines in the first place.  It was really shoehorned onto the last-gen consoles.

And only sell like six million copies versus a chagillion?  You'd make an excellent businessman.

Here is a more up to date PC vs. Console experience.  I have a PC and a Playstation; here is what I experience nowadays:

Play game on PC:
1. Click install on Steam
2. Come back in 4+ hours
3. Launch game
4. Have vague sense that you could make the game look better than the "detected" settings
5. Spend next 30 minutes looking at game tweak sights on how tweak the settings and what high res mods to install
6. Play game in 4 megapixel glory, smug in the knowledge the game is double the resolution of any console and looks far better thanks the fact that you can turn on AA, etc.
7. You never have to find a disc again and all updates happen in the background automatically

Play game on console:
1. Put in disc
2. Let game install for the next 30 minutes
3. Let game download and install the multi-gigabyte day 0 patch for the next 2 hours
4. Play game
5. Be annoyed at the lack of AA causing the game to be flickery mess, the inability to disable motion blur, etc.
6. Pray the game will be released on the PC do you don't have to put up with this
7. At least you can play from the couch
8. Next time you fire up the game wait for another 30 minutes while it downloads and installs the latest patch

In the end I do almost all of my gaming on the PC.

Try using mouse & keyboard while reclining, with your feet up.

The only people who obsess about mouse & keyboard anymore are obsessive twitch FPS gamers who think circle-strafing is vitally important and who think winning a round of COD is some kind of grand honor... And frankly, most FPS games suck these days.

As I read this I was reclined on my sofa with my feet up and using a mouse to scroll down the page, with my computer connected to my TV on the other side of the room. It's not even a particularly complicated setup, I just have a usb extension cable or two. I was going to post a picture of me doing it, but I'm shirtless, and my table is a post dinner mess, so you'll just have to imagine.

Your arguments are wrong.
