The idea of "First World", "Second World", and "Third World" is a term from the Cold-War and doesn't necessarily mean a country is not up to modern times. See Greenland in bright red? The living conditions and such in Greenland aren't anything like sub-Saharan nations where people live in mud huts. The whole set of terms is really about geopolitical alliances.

How old is that map and what is its source? I ask because "third world" hasn't been the accepted nomenclature in years and Brazil is often ranked with China as "rising star with uncertain stability" for quite a while.

There's a huge gap between the countries in red on that map. Ask yourself, should Brazil and South Africa be lumped in with Sierra Leone and Haiti economically?

Good point. The people who live in mud huts in Greenland don't have to worry about them melting in the sun and drowning their goats in liquid dirt.

China and Brazil are not "3rd world". There is a TED talk (a real one by a real scientist, not one of those offshoot spoken word hacks) that shows birth rate and mortality data over the last sixty years or so. By his metrics, China is first world already and Brazil is fast approaching.

Doesn't mean there's no poverty or crime, of course, but if you use that definition, half of the US is 3rd world.

Countries like Argentina and Brazil (and China) have great disparities, even within the same city.

So Argentina, for instance, has cities that are 'first world' cities, though a bit beaten down, and a solid middle class, but it also has neighborhoods in Buenos Aires that you would be insane to walk into and are basically brick buildings with a tin roof. (and DirecTV).  Then you go out to the provinces and see 1800's US like living.

I think the proper term since the end of the cold war is developing nation, vs. developed nation.

1st, 2nd, 3rd world were a reference to various countries alligiance to NATO or the Warzhawa Pact. That would make Brazil a 3rd world country, as it was a member of neither.

---

That map is wrong anyway. Just of the top of my head, Greenland is Danish, and thus 1st world. USA even has a base there. Cuba would obviously be 2nd world, being commies and allied with the Soviet Union.

Lots of more mistakes. But kinda irrelevant now a days I guess.

The original definition is that first world is "US/NATO ally", second world is "Commie", and third world is "neutral".

A real scientist wouldn't use terms like 1st and 3rd world nations.

These are terms used by political scientists, and have nothing to do with wealth.

I don't know if China classifies as a developed nation. I'd say no, but whatever.

Greenland is marked wrong on the map.

Its a Danish island, thus obviously 1st world, seeing as Denmark is in NATO.

USA even has a base in Thule.

---

Otherwise you're right. The terms are used in geopolitics, not as indicators of relative wealth.

Historically speaking it just so hapends that 3rd world countries were mostly shiatholes, so people started to associate the term with poverty.

The correct terminonoly is developed vs. developing nation though.

Do you know how to tell if your scores are actually saved and submitted? I joined a few days ago, and I've hit "submit scores" a couple times now on my sheet, yet every time I log back in, I'm greeted by those scores and it's prompting me to submit them again.

I don't. I know the EPL version was a bit flasky about remembering scores if you let much time elapse between logging in and hitting submit. I also found keeping the "stay logged in" checkbox selected heped somewhat, but no guarantees.

If you log out and log back in again and your scores are there then they are submitted.  The reason you can submit them again is that you are allowed to make changes up until the whistle blows to start each match.  It does seem a little confusing, but if your scores are there after you log in, you should be good.

First, second, and third world was more about political and economic affiliation than about wealth.  First world was NATO and friends, second was Warsaw pact and other commie brass studs, and third was everyone else.

I know it's not going to happen, but I'd like a Bosnia vs. Croatia final. One is in Group A (1st letter of the alphabet, an odd number), the other in Group F (6th letter, even number). The only way someone from A / C / E / G can play someone from B / D / F / H is in the Final or the 3rd Place game.
