Can a coach get fined for flopping? I guess we are about to find out.

Technically, every coach eventually becomes an ex-coach. Even Red Auerbach and Phil Jackson are ex-coaches.

2014-06-10 03:29:55 AM
They are not ex-coaches. They're just pining for the fjords.

Subby, Deadspin had the same headline for the same news-peg some 9 hours earlier.  Just sayin'.

Also the best point guard on their roster.

"Hey! We're the Knicks! We're NBA Royalty because we won two titles in the 70's! Everyone wants to be part of the Knicks!"

"Yes, sir."

"Our roster is a dumpster fire! Our best case scenario is that we somehow manage to convince our best player to stay, and we roll out the same team that won 37 games last year! But that's OK because we're the Knicks! And our best player is probably leaving anyway, and we'll still be $5m over the cap! So, how are we gonna fix this?"

"Uh....Phil Jackson?"

"Perfect! Love it! Greatest coach in NBA history! He'll turn us around!"

"He, uh...actually doesn't want to coach."

"That's OK! Vice President of Whatever!"

"Or...actually live in New York. He wants to know our policy on Work From Home, in this case California."

"We're in favor of it! Get some smart people in here, pay him a dump truck full of money! OK, who's next on our coaching list?"

"Uh....Steve Kerr?"

"Perfect! Love it! He was a GM and doesn't have any head coaching experience, but he shot a lot of threes so we can assume he'll be an amazing coach. Plus Phil loves him!"

"Oops, he took a better job with the Warriors, a team with actual NBA talent."

"That's OK! Disappointed but these things happen! Does Phil want to coach yet? What about if I add another zero to his paycheck?"

"Afraid not, sir."

"OK, who's next?"

"Uh.....Derek Fisher?"

"Is he actually retired yet? Whatever, doesn't matter, I'm already writing his name on a check. Love it! Another short guy, they make great coaches. It worked out for the Nets with Jason Kidd, right?"

"I mean, I guess he..."

"Of course it did, they made the playoffs right? NBA titles here we come! Now, can we trade Cole Aldrich and Tim Hardaway Jr for LeBron? Is that a deal the Heat would make?"

"I don't think that..."

"Call up President Heat. I'll see if I can talk him into it."

Knicks need a new owner at this point.

Holy shiat that's funny. I'm going to read that every time I need a good laugh today.

Not sure how it'll work between him and management, but Fish is a smart guy and was a huge locker room presence on the championship Lakers sides. If he can get comfortable there, I think he will do well as a coach. Unfortunately NYC media is relentless and unforgiving, so I don't know if he'll get enough time to really settle in before criticism starts.

At this point?! A new owner has been needed since at least 2 Isiaiah Thomas hirings ago.

Okay, somebody please prove this assumption wrong:

Phil Jackson realizes this team stinks and will always stink so long as Dolan calls the shots, but at the same time, he has no problem taking money from him. Phil accepts the coach-that's-not-really-a-coach position, as he doesn't want to actually coach the team, per se, given that the best player on the team isn't one of the top 3 players currently in that position, which just happens to be one of the small stipulations for the triangle offense to work. So, when the team sucks this upcoming season (Oh, crap. Was I supposed to say "SPOILER ALERT" for the Knicks fans?), it won't be Phil Jackson to blame, it'll be Derek Fisher to blame. I mean, he's a first year coach who's clearly in over his head! Who'd be so dumb to hire him? James Dolan, of course.

The conjecture down at Posting & Toasting is that Fisher is a sock puppet multiclassed with a protege.  Phil will show him the ropes and scheme from behind the curtain, but it'll be the younger Fisher who has to travel with the team, sit on the sidelines and deal with stupid reporters.  Sounds like the best of both worlds on paper.

In practice, despite what he thinks now, I doubt Fisher will be satisfied being Phil's sock puppet (basically doing all the crap coaches hate and none of the fun) and Phil can only coach so well sitting in an office.  Both are more civil than 99% of the NBA (you gotta be to stand being on the Lakers) so I doubt there will be any public displays of infighting but this won't work as well as planned.  For starters NY doesn't have the players to run Phil's triangle offense (or any sort of offense beyond Melo iso for that matter) so what are they going to do for the first 5-6 years as they slowly turn over the roster?  The smartest thing they can do is trade Melo for some draft picks but then they'll go from a 37 win team to where the Jazz were at last season and that's if they do everything right.  Knicks fans won't stand for it.

I don't know any Knicks fan who's delusional enough to say that. That said, Dolan might be.

Be fearful, Rangers fans.
If the Rangers end up getting swept, Dolan may decide to start "reasserting control" over your team, too.

You have no clue what you are talking about...Fisher has yet to win a game as the head coach of the Knicks and they even have Carmelo Anthony.  I think its time for the knicks to find a better head coach that can actually win a game.  The knicks have zero wins for the 2014-2015 season so far and it's all Fishers fault.  I have yet to even see him call a time-out.

Knicks fans, generally, are more patient than you'd think.  Given that they've sucked for over a decade (with a couple decent years that ended in playoff failure), fans are willing to sit through what it takes to get good, as long as there's a light at the end of that tunnel.

The NY media, however, knows that rabblerousing about how much the team sucks sells better than recognizing a rebuilding effort (not that they've really made one yet), and so you get tons of stories about how everyone needs to be fired immediately.

Look at the Mets.  Disappointing team, good prospects, pretty solid looking future (assuming the Wilpons are willing to bring in a big bat at some point, ever, which they probably aren't but that's a different issue).  Rather than consider this a plus, all the media coverage is OMG CONSPIRACY THEORIES AS TO WHY THE METS ARE AWFUL AND WILL NEVER BE GOOD EVER EVER.  Right now, the leading one is that they can't fire their manager because doing so would piss off Sandy Koufax.

What the fark is that?

You're crazy, right there. Derek Fisher is literally undefeated as a head coach. Name any other legendary head coach with a better record. He has fewer losses than coaches in the Hall of Fame. Better than Red Auerbach, better than Adoph Rupp, better than John Wooden.  Why on earth would you fire a guy with a resumé like that?
