She tripped over that ottoman one too many times. =(

These things happen. At least a) she's not poor, b) she didn't go full Reeve, and c) she's already in great shape.

A report by the Show Low Police Department said the ATV that Rouen was driving hit a curb in a restaurant parking lot and sent her over a drop-off between 5 to 7 feet.

WTF?  Why was she driving an ATV in a restaurant parking lot?

Seriously.  That's the best picture they could find of her for this story?

Could have been worse.
Could have been an ATM accident.

Her husband, former Denver Broncos punter Tom Rouen, told police officers he had changed the throttle mechanism on the ATV from a thumb accelerator to a twist accelerator a few days before the accident, though wasn't sure if it was a factor in the accident.

When I would get into trouble on my motorcycle, I often felt the twist accelerator made it worse because leaning or falling backwards on the motorcycle would open the throttle and the bike would accelerate away. Always seemed like a nasty positive feedback.

Ah, ATVs. When you absolutely, positively want to be critically injured or killed.

Buddy of mine had one land on the left half of his face. Left him half blind, with over 100K in medical bills.

The coincidental (or ironic? can never keep up) part is the doctor said if he had been wearing a helmet, it would have more than likely killed him because of the unique point of impact.

I dont know what point I was going to make other than, I think ill keep my distance from those things.

Though not technically an ATV, my dad lost most of his left hand (he basically has half his palm and his thumb) when the Rhino he was driving tipped. He grabbed the roll bar with his left hand and it got crushed.

Well, that was stupid of her.

Sorry, but it was.

/it's not the vehicle, it's the person

Also, I hope this doesn't end up on the ID network anytime soon... what with the husband fiddling with the throttle.

Good point. I have yet to hear a story involving one of these things that ends even close to well.

I've heard of a half dozen people making the switch to twist throttle on an atv and it always ends badly.
On a bike you rarely move the bars more than a few degrees as a function of leaning when turning. On an atv you don't lean and turn the bars drasticly to steer. Every story I heard involved turning to avoid something (tree, other atv, car etc....) and ended up accelerating.
While it is probably more familiar to have a twist throttle its not the same machine.

/on a bike you can avoid potholes by leaning and not changing steering input at all

Exactly.

And add in that it was just a recent change-and the potential for trouble is there. The thumb switch gets uncomfortable, but in any sort of sudden correction, you thumb tends to get go.

//Mostly use the ATV for driving around my own property...SLOWLY.

The way 4 wheelers are built and weighted if you lose your shiat it's going to land on top of you and break your spine. If you are extremely lucky it will just kill you.

4 wheelers, the one form of transportation that makes motorcycles look safe by comparison.

The injury was at her T11 vertebrae, about halfway down her rib cage.  I agree helmets are a good idea but one wouldn't have helped in this case.

My brother-in-law was riding in the woods several years ago, went up a hill and a sapling popped up the front end of his ATV. It rolled back on him and broke his back. Laid under it in a creek about an hour until they found him.

On an ATV with an unfamiliar accelerator, without any safety gear whatsoever, in a parking lot? Well, that'll learn her.

You know what would've helped?
- Wearing not just a helmet, but a safety vest with a back protector.
- Not driving the ATV in a parking lot with high curbs just before a 7 foot drop.
- Not treating an ATV like a toy.

Tragic, but completely avoidable accident.

When i was a kid i lost control of a three wheeler and ended up riding down a hill and into a pond. Fortunately i didnt get very far into the pond and was able to get off and walk away. My uncle was happy about me being OK but kinda pissed about the 3 wheeler being in the water.

My wife thinks I'm crazy but I truly believe there is a hillbilly/redneck devil and he has unleashed three things upon mankind to harm us :

1) the two cycle engine ( leaf blowers, chain saws etc... a true stumpjumper cant wait to fire those up an rev the bejeezuhs out of them any chance they get )

2) ATVs - The HBRD almost succeeded in his cunning plan to kill a bunch of people with the three wheeler but them libruls™ and stuff took them freedoms away so he's back with the four wheeler

3) The BulleyEdgeBanksCooterClet-master6000 diesel tuner.. letting ex ricers and white n-words everywhere buy a used diesel pickup, slap one on, rip the exhaust out and put stacks through the bed and footbrake the crap out of them half the night rolling coal and doing burnouts until the score a hole. The folks usually live in the most run down POS house in the neighborhood too, cry poor (see libruls™) but have no issue driving all over town with their shiatewagons burning $4/gal diesel and never, ever shutting them off unless they are home.

Fark you Hillbilly Redneck Devil !!

Yep, a friend's cousin is in a hospital, in critical condition, because he went out after dark on the ATV at their cabin, after it rained, and was found later in a ditch with the ATV on top of him.  No idea if he was wearing a helmet or not but I met the kid a few times and I would guess no.

I remember a friend of mine had one growing up. Then he came to school one day with his whole arm in a cast from finger tip to shoulder. He tried dodging a rock and rolled the thing over his arm

Add one more to the list: snowmobiles.

NSCSB: I took a stab at snowmobile aviation about 15 years ago, when I misjudged a culvert as a slight rise in the snow and hit it at about 40 MPH. I must have launched a good 15 feet or so into the air from that. I was damn lucky I didn't get seriously hurt.

Aside from hidden obstacles, there are those brave and/or drunk souls who inexplicably try to use them as watercraft (better hope your engine doesn't lose power!), and there are plenty of other ways to get maimed or killed.

/got rid of the snowmobile a couple years later, mostly because there hadn't been worthwhile snow
