I hope I never become one of those humorless and perpetually outraged parents.

The images were silly but were be used to make valid and informative points.

But let's not let that get in the way of an epic flabbergasting.

Actually, I'm bothered by the idea that in order to be authentically masculine, a hetero/bisexual man has to give oral sex to a woman while she's on her period. If you're into that, that's fine. But there are lots of people who don't and that's fine too. I don't think wo/men have to perform fellatio to be authentically gendered either. That's foolish.

I'm trying, but I cannot understand how that's a valid and informative point, even within the context of sex ed.  It's just a joke.  Incidentally, it's also one that would get you accused of creating a "hostile working environment" in almost any corporation in the country with an HR department.

THIS.

Teaching kids that position, douching, 1st time, etc... are not going to prevent pregnancy is valid and what we were taught 25 years ago.  Oral sex during menstruation doesn't need to be taught in school.  It's something every man must face, alone... with only his fear.  Fear is the mind killer.

When I was in 5th grade and 6th grade, there were two sex ed videos we had to watch. In 5th grade, the boys watched the one about the boys, and the girls watched the one about girls. The next year, it was reversed. The girls video had a scene of a woman giving birth, and the camera showed everything.

If we could make it through that and turn out alright, I'm pretty sure some high schoolers can handle a silly picture.

I had well more than that for sex-ed, in a Jesuit school no less, it's just that that joke isn't an educational anything.  It's a one panel comic you'd see in a Hustler, or forwarded in an email. The rest of them sound just fine, but no one has been able to come up with a justification for that one, because it's just crass.  I refuse to believe it was even reviewed unless there's a super-secret double-probation teaching program going on.  Cheap jokes should not be part of sex-ed.

First things first, I'm not surprised you had that in a Jesuit school. I went to a Jesuit high school, and when one of my classmates asked about YEC, our biology teacher basically responded with "No, in this class we will be discussing actual science, not pseudoscience." The student complained to the Dean who basically repeated the same thing. Jesuits are one of the few "branches" of Christianity that I pretty much universally respect. One of my role models was a priest I met at that school.

Anyway, as to TFA. In my driver's ed class in high school, we had to look at GRAPHIC pictures of the results of drunk driving. In health class we had to look at slides of smoker's lungs and watch a human dissection. And all of that paled in comparison to what we did outside of class.

While I agree the slide was in poor taste, and probably shouldn't have been used, I don't think it's outrage-worthy. In fact, while it's admittedly an incredibly weak justification, I think the sentiment behind it is an important one. Just because your girlfriend is on her period, doesn't mean she's icky and unclean and shouldn't be touched. Hell, I had an ex who was insufferable when she was on her period, unless we had regular sex.

Sex-ed in a Jesuit school.  Say no more, say no more.

Thankfully despite its undeserved reputation as a hillbilly playground full of toothless sharecroppers, Iowa had a very progressive health and sex education curriculum as part of its elementary education program so I didn't have my prepubescent years getting all my sexual information from Judy Blume paperbacks.  My teachers also had a great sense of humor.

It's an incredibly weak justification.  The rest of the images were at least abstract illustrations of common sex-ed points that need to be made.  A guy's bloody face and a joke about periods is just that - a joke.  It's an old one, it was funny in nineteen diggity-aught-onion-octo-unus when I first heard it, but unless someone is making the argument that you need bad jokes to properly teach sex-ed, that's just a bad decision all around.  I sincerely doubt anyone reviewed the program at all, like they are claiming.  Most of the images people are claiming to be offended by are perfectly legit, but that one isn't not unless you're insane.  Sex-ed still needs to maintain some semblance of being a class and not what you'd learn on the internet.

Like I said before, I don't think it's totally acceptable. It was a boneheaded move, and the teacher shouldn't have used it. I just don't think it's something to be outraged about it.

You want to see overreaction, just wait a few years when these kids put jokes like these in their PowerPoint decks and the liberal womyns that they work with lose their farking minds.   Seriously, why is shiat that would get an adult slapped with a sexual harassment charge okay for middle school kids?

So what, that's just a tie-in for polygamists, as such that you respect the orientation or cycles, its not exactly support for such, just socio-moral coordinates so you have the right angle of attack if encountered.

Seriously?  I already have a Brazzers account, stop wasting my kids time so MAYBE you have time to teach it calculus 1 before you hand it that little bullshiat diploma.

Oh noes!  They made a sex joke in front of my (post pubescent) baby!

Given the theme of the other slides I suspect it was not used to discuss oral sex but probably to lead in to a discussion of how women can get pregnant when they're on their periods, which is an important thing for kids to learn.

It really bothers me that there are people out there still completely bothered by a dirty joke or a sex scene in a movie. It's only sex. Get over it already. Thankfully they have their weekly brainwashing sessions in private and I'm not required to attend.

Somacandra: If you're into that, that's fine. But there are lots of people who don't and that's fine too.

Actually, that's a good example of an objection to it that's  not OK.  Mostly because it's part of a set of old-school religious rules that were "patriarchal" in less the 'vague feeling of emotional inferiority' sense of modern-day misogyny and more the 'men can literally murder or rape a woman any time he feels like with the full support of god and the law, barring another man getting there first' sense.

Not being into it because you think it's gross is an example of a 'fine' reason.  Taking the older school of Abrahamic religion and its approach to sexuality seriously is a reason that you shouldn't engage in relationships at all because you're kind of a psychopath.

Yes...one example of poor judgment involving sexual education is a good reason that we should just not teach it at all because a few hundred kids being shown a photo on the internet that they would probably end up seeing while they're screwing around on the internet instead of doing their homework is much worse than those same kids having unprotected sex and becoming parents as teenagers and contracting STDs because no one ever bothered to try to explain any facts about sex other than "Don't do it because it's bad!"
