If they do issue the lump-sum check, I'd hope that he's got sense enough to not go blowing through it until after his legal proceedings are completed.  I hope that it is exceedingly rare for a released POW getting out of enemy hands to be in an "out of the pan and into the fire" situation.

They should also give him the money of the 6 soldiers that died looking for him.  Shouldn't be a problem, King Obama has no regard for the law.  Look no further than this or Benghazi to see.  At least Reagan came out and admitted all his wrong doing when caught, even though he arguably didn't do anything wrong at all, and didn't throw anyone under the bus.  All Obama has done is throw the far-right leaning members of Bergdahl's platoon under the bus.  All these crimes are going to come home to roost when 0bama gets impeached for high crimes.

Not bad. Its got Reagan, Benghazi, "King Obama," Iran-Contra and Impeachment. My only complaint is that you called Bergdahl's critics "far-right." That seems like too much of a giveaway too soon. But a decent recovery at the end with the prediction. 4/10.

If he were serious, he wouldn't refer to them that way. So I'm going with "almost spot-on parody."

There is another possibility.  When he was typing "far-right leaning" he might have stopped and did air quotes because he was trying to be sarcastic (as a shot at libs) about labeling the brave troops but forgot to put the real quotes.

Reminds me of a Farker last week derping up a thread then saying he was doing a 'This is what conservatives actually believe' shtick. It was pointless. Why do you have to pretend what they believe as if we were lacking in that department? I can go into the other thread and read the other 50 accounts saying the same thing.

But then you have to come up with various exchange rates for rapine.  I'd hate to sit down and solve the equation to calculate payment based upon victims age, gender, nation of origin, skin tone, donk factor, experience or virginity, and the 0-10 hotness scale.  It'd be like doing your taxes every time you get paid or laid.

Well subby, it shouldn't be.  Every POW is given back pay for the time they are held.  Now if he is brought up on charges of desertion that would be another story.  I am not sure if he would be considered in an active duty status and eligible for pay in that case.  A desertion charge may also nullify the promotions he recieved whild in captivity.  Every POW is automatically advanced in rank at each promotion opportunity they are eligible for.

And any investigation into the circumstances surrounding his capture are subject to the discretion of the chain of command above him.  Meaning that anybody above him can excuse his absences after the fact if it is deemed in the best interests of the service.  That person would then be subject to disciplanary review if their actions were determined to be unlawful.  This can go all the way up.  I would expect that there is a general somewhere sending a memo down the chain of command saying that Bergdahl's record is to be kept clean, and that he is to get processed out with no action.

This won't go up to the POTUS. It won't even be at a secretary level.  If it results in a public relations backlash, the general will admit that he acted on his own for the good of the service, and if the uproar is too great, he will be allowed to retire with honor.

Until such time that Bergdhal is convicted in a courts martial of desertion, he is entitled to every benefit earned by every other POW.

My money's on "sure, we're releasing your pay to this accou-- oops, looks like that account has been frozen by a court-order pending the outcome of your court-martial.  Good luck, bro!"

rohar: Treason is a pretty high bar to jump.  Which 3 Americans saw him work with the enemy?

Technically, he just said the guy  committed treason, not that it's what he'd be tried for.  People that commit treason typically commit other crimes along the way, such as going AWOL or misappropriating state secrets or violating their oath of service.

This is the best post on the thread. I came to say that even if he is a deserter, people are innocent until proven guilty and the government can't withhold pay pending the outcome of an investigation which may or may not lead to a trial. I can't believe anyone is advocating that. We are a nation of laws and principles. You can't just punish people because you feel like it.
