Has to be pretty hot there, especially this time of year.

Savannah is a nice city, though...I guess...

Did they find the wee dark engine room?

/Tucked in Leith harbor's sheltered bay, safely anchored ten abreast.

I'm smelling the next Silent Hill sequel. Abandoned whaling station in remote Antarctic island overrun by terrifying penguins. Er, well. It needs a little fine-tuning, but it's a great start.

Heh. In all seriousness, the British Government should encourage the use of this island for films.

Not bloody likely.  It's in the middle of nowhere and the winds there are brutal.

Did anyone else guess several wrong Georgias before seeing the map on the article?

"Penguins in Georgia?  WTF that doesn't make any sense."
"... wait, what if they mean Georgia?   WTF, that also doesn't make any sense."
"oooooooooooooooooooooooh"

Except for the island is toxic from all of the asbestos that was used in the buildings and machinery that are now all deteriorating.  Unless you don't believe in that type of thing.

That's one of the remote islands I've got down on my "remote islands tour" (I'll probably start with Saint Helena, Tristan da Cunha, and Gough Island. Maybe parachute on to Inaccessible Island for a night...)
There's actually an Argentinian war grave there, I believe. One soldier was killed when the Royal Navy rocked up a few weeks after the Falklands war to boot off the Argentinian garrison that had furtively taken it over.
Also, the grave of the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton is on South Georgia.

That's only the whaling station area. The island is sort of inhabited by scientists and officials from Britain.

If penguins live there how is it abandoned?

FTFA: "When we killed the sei whales," Roddy Morrison, from Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, remembers, "they used to make a noise, like a crying noise. They seemed so friendly, and they'd come round and they'd make a noise, and when you hit them, they cried really.
"I didn't think it was really nice to do that. Everybody talked about it at the time I suppose, but it was money. At the end of the day that's what counted at the time. That's what we were there for."

Soo... not research?

No, that was Bouvetoya Island, which is "Bouvet Island Island" in some obscure Scandinavian tongue.

Asbestos isn't as toxic as you might think.  It's not exactly toxic waste.

The island isn't toxic.

Just that little tiny piece of the island.  And if you wear a mask so you don't breath in the asbestos, you'd be fine.

Warren Miller did this about a decade ago, only after taking it all in they made tracks down the mountain (I think the film is entitled "Storm").

Meh, it's been done (the first Aliens vs Predator movie was set in such a thing (and the giant pyramid thingy buried a mile beneath it).

Worst of both the Predator *AND* Alien films. Still watched a few times though. But it pissed me off that it's established that Predators like hot environments in both prior films, so they set this one on Bouvet/Peter I island, which is covered in a farking' glacier.
