Yeah, that's Detroit. It's always like that. That's why you can buy houses for $100 there.

Socioeconomics is a harsh mistress. If it weren't for ketchup, Pittsburgh might be like this today, too.

FTFA: The neighbor accidentally shot the child instead of the dog.

I blame Hollywood.  There are a lot more evil kids in movies than evil dogs.  You can't fight that level of conditioning.

Well, according TFA he's in the hospital, so that's some kind of improvement.

This is just another example of the 'good guy with a gun' fallacy.

He was expertly creepy in that one.

Here's a fixer-upper for a buck.

FTFA: Then, a neighbor came outside and attempted to help the child by shooting the dog. The neighbor accidentally shot the child instead of the dog

I kept looking for something about it being a cop.  Immediately jumping to shooting as a solution to an agressive dog?  Shooting the victim?  That's definitely their style.

Fark: by the cops.

Didn't expect it to be a neighbor.

Idiot.  Totally wrong approach.  You can't stop a bad dog with a gun.  You need a good dog with a gun to do that.

They should start adding city and stuff like that to tombstones.  Like, so cemeteries would be huge high-score boards.  You lived to 85?  But you lived in Luxemborg in the 1900s.  Weak.  The lady two rows down made it to 53 in 1880s Addis Ababa.

2014-06-09 03:32:11 AM
Assuming the neighbor is a level 1 Range Ranger (and possibly a level 1 Dojo Ballerina), that -4 penalty for firing into a melee is pretty steep.  And he probably rolled a natural one on top of that...

I lived in Southfield which is just north of 8 mile literally across the road from Detroit and worked at a couple of local hospitals. I was driving to a meeting with a fellow employee and we were waiting at a light by a public basketball court in Detroit where a pickup game between 10 teens was going on and they had their shirts off. She goes, "Notice anything about the players?" and I don't and say so and then she points out that 7 or 8 out of the 10 have laparotomy incision scars from sternum to pubis which are done for exploring penetrating abdominal trauma from gunshots or stabs.

Maybe he did know exactly what he was doing.  Kids are farking annoying.  There's no context to the article either, nothing that mentions what the kid was (maybe) doing to the dog before it attacked.  Maybe the kid deserved it.

Does Detroit even have police anymore?

Robocop is fiction, man.

doglover: Does Detroit even have police anymore?

Sure. Their response time is about 7 hours - if they come at all.

I blame the kid's parents. If they'd loved him, they'd have armed him.

Holy shiat!  That's Warrendale!  That's where I grew up.

What happened to that old Polish neighborhood is absolutely criminal.  It breaks my heart to see it now.

CruiserTwelve: doglover: Does Detroit even have police anymore?

They don't unless it's a violent crime and someone is injured.  Some years back my car was vandalized and a number of things stolen.  They didn't even send an officer.  I called the police station they told me to come in and file a report and basically just accepted whatever I said.  They don't even respond to gunfire anymore unless someone is hit.

Sounds familiar.

roanapura.city.free.fr

Seriously though, we need to really consider just abolishing narcotics police. ALL of them fired no pension... UNLESS they move to one of them $1 dollar houses and start cleaning up violent crime in Detroit. The very same violent crime that would make someone train a junk yard dog and someone else think discharging a gun is quicker than getting a baseball bat or rolling pin in the same neighborhood where a 7 year old lives.

This was not a "no fault" incident, but I'm not convinced I wouldn't have trained the same kind of killer mutt if I was forced to live in Detroit. It's a different level over there.

Unless the shooter was horrified by the sight of the kid and wanted to perform a mercy killing, but that is illegal in MI and is trying to not go to jail.

Nah. It's hard to hit the right person with a projectile weapon in the middle of a melee. I know one hunter who shot his own dog when it was in a fight with a raccoon. That's why you don't break up melee with projectiles.

Maybe he thought if he shoots the kids to stop him from moving, then the dog would lose interest.

My first day at grad school at U of D Mercy, I take a right onto McNichols from Woodward and pass a burning car.  People were going about their business as if this was completely natural.  After living in and around Detroit for most of my life, they were right.  it is completely natural.  And just a few hundred yards West of Woodward is what's considered a "nice" part of Detroit.  Relatively speaking, obviously.

You can tell that's the case by the way my body only has natural orifices. No sucking chest wounds or punctured livers.

No kidding. If more people played D&D they'd know about the proper use of melee weapons. The last you thing you want to deal with while in hand-to-had combat with an orc is to suffer a friendly fire arrow wound.

Obviously, the guy was trying to help the child heal. When a horse gets injured, they shoot it, right? Apparently it helps with the healing process or something..
