Mentalpatient87: You know what's definitely NOT enticing me toward your videos? Whining about negative feedback, bragging about your numbers growing, and smugly assuring me that you're not going anywhere anyway in every other post. It's not very welcoming for someone who is apparently looking to include everybody. And yeah, like Cpl said, I'm kind of tired of all the sponsored, monetized crap that's been happening for the past few years. It's like my favorite hang out spot has been crowded in by carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen, and this new thing is just another annoying guy with a booth with his eye on my wallet. (Or that's the first reaction, anyway)

Whoa. Sorry it came off that way. Not trying to whine, just engaging Farkers, as their inclusion means something to me. And that's not a company mandated thing, just my personal goal.

Also, definitely not "bragging" about our numbers. Maybe you're late to the party, but the constant feedback ANY type of Fark video project has gotten is "Stop Trying To Make (___) Happen." That's just my way of saying we are happening, we have happened, and we will continue to happen. Definitely NOT a braggy thing. Just a, "hey, let's not fight. You're here. You're the mothership. We're a weird little cruiser ship. Even lower in class than a Y-Wing. But let's be friends" sort of thing.

And yes, including everybody is an impossibility, but it's important to me that Farkers know that I understand the history of failed video Fark projects I am fighting against, BUT, I do hope to make something they enjoy.

Monetization, Sponsorship, bullshiat, bullshiat, bullshiat. I get it. Luckily, I'm not a suit. And I don't deal with that stuff. I'm just looking to make a funny, silly, weird news web series people enjoy.

AgentKGB: Cpl.D: Mentalpatient87: Has there ever been a generally positive reception to these things? Because these Fark TV re branded videos seem terrible enough to be you Jose Cuervo Cue Moment of the Week. Brought to you by Gawker media and the Daily Mail.

/and Carl's Jr.

Well, here's the thing.  Remember that kid in high school?  The one that thought his jokes were HILARIOUS, but fell flat and died every time?  You know that guy.  He'd tell the same damned joke in a thousand different ways.  Because he found it funny, he figured everyone would find it funny.  But they didn't.  So he did it over, and over, and over, and over again, all in slightly different ways, fully expecting people to finally "get it".  What he never understood is everybody "got it", they just didn't want it.   The problem wasn't in how he was saying it.  It was what was being said.  It just wasn't funny.  The only thing common to every failed retelling of the joke was HIM.

FarkTV is like that.  It doesn't understand why we don't "get" the sweat and the dead man's balls.  We got it ages ago.  We just don't want it.

THIS

I tried to like WTFark. First it was the nervous "I don't want to be here" guy trying his best. Then it was that British Elvis lovechild woman who couldn't stop her lips from sneering after every sentence.

I appreciate Fark trying something new... but it didn't work.

"Hey guys, remember FarkTV? Well here's WTFark! We welcome feedback."

"It's awful. The material is terrible, the host is awful, etc etc."

"Hey guys, look! WTFark is back with a new host!"

"It's still awful. The material is terrible, the host is slightly better than last time but still awful, etc etc."

"Hey guys, look! WTFark is back and 99% of its threads don't allow comments... *cough*"

Please just kill WTFark. It's bringing the Fark brand name down.

Thanks!
Still going to work tomorrow...

Actually, this show is called WTFark and it's only been what it's been since March, so to assume it's anything like Fark TV, or to assume it's like anything what happened prior, that's like using high school experiences to analogize adulthood.

Also, the show is for a very wide audience, wider than active regulars of Total Fark discussion, and I didn't realize that you were qualified to speak on behalf of everyone on the internet. Did I miss a memo?

SuperDeluxe.  Fark TV.  These are your predecessors.  These were constantly shoved into our faces.  These were terrible.  Your show could be "slightly good", and it's still gonna kill you.  Simply because of the presentation.  Rather than have it's own category, it's put in random catagories, comments are disabled, and they seem to jump the list so it's near the top.  Like the previous two, it's being shoved into our faces, yet again.  So it's round three of the sweat and the dead man's balls.  It ain't about you personally.  It's about how it's being done.  It's round three of the same thing.  If you wanna separate yourself from that horrible ancestorship, you gotta present it in a different way.  Cut the association.

I have to tell ya, that's not it for some of us. Not for me, anyway.

I never saw FarkTV. I've never *heard* of SuperDeluxe. So I came into this with very little bias.

Simply put, the little I was able to watch of WTFark was... well, ok: it wasn't just that it was bad. The first season of many new things are bad, so that's ok.

What did I hate so much? What turned me off to it? Farker LesserEvil may have hit on it when he mentioned Talk Soup and Tosh.0. I would also throw in the "Illustrated FMLs." I would also point out Mikerylander's comment from earlier ITT: "our show is a mass audience forward video personification of the community." What the what?

The episode I tried to watch immediately felt like a corporatized low-budget knockoff of things already being done to death. It was like drinking Mr. Pibb-- with apologies to the Mr. Pibb fans out there... both of you. It didn't connect to the Fark community. It sure didn't "personify" the Fark community. It pseudo-Farkerized the other shows (cable and online) mentioned. And, I'm sorry mike, but I just didn't find you funny. Or personable. You might very well be, in person, but it didn't come across on camera. I immediately didn't like the show because it was generic. It was formulaic, rehashed, and just felt like it was there to cash in on what's already being done elsewhere.

And yeah, taking away the ability to comment just distanced WTFark from the community even more. Ever see Eastwood's "Gran Torino," where he teaches the kid how to give the guys a hard time as a way of earning acceptance? And that you have to be able to take ribbing from the guys if you want to be respected? It's like Farker thehobbes said above: at least once a thread someone posts a welcometofark.jpg. By disallowing comments, you immediately lost Fark's respect.

And even worse, the handful of times I've ever seen you post to Fark, Mike, it's been in WTFark threads and it's always been defensive. Fark does not respect butthurt, Mike. Telling Farker Cpl.D above that you weren't aware that he spoke for everyone on the Internet? Butthurt. Your huffy reply to my earlier post ITT about how you're "syndicated by the Huffington Post and AOL?" Butthurt.

Which brings me to the second thing. You would know all this if you spent any real time in the comment threads. You want to claim to be a "video personification of the community?" Then stop the industry-speak (like that phrase) and actually join the community. You can just lurk, that's fine. But if you spent any real time in the threads, I wouldn't need to be telling you the stuff I'm saying here. The Fark community is not subtle. You'd pick up on it all really fast.

And before you say that you spend lots of time on Fark... I'm not talking about skimming the posts and comments for show material. You aren't learning about the community that way. Put the show aside and really spend a few hours a week just... Farking.

A salient point.  Fark isn't the links or the catchy headlines.  Fark is the place where we chew the articles and hack up headlines.  Fark is where we discuss things.  Fark is interaction.  For good and for ill.

My 2c:

Don't care about what we have to say... but do care about what we have to say.
Its like when we tell our disgustingly obese girlfriends that they have to lose weight or else we're going to leave her: Its seen as incredibly mean and rude, but deep down we mean the best. We want our fat girlfriends to lose weight because we don't want them to crush us in our sleep if she rolls over on us.

And we care about their health. Or something.

No, we don't care about you. We care about Fark and if WTFark is the public outreach center handing out condoms to the teenagers in the neighborhood, we expect the condoms not to have pictures of 90 year old naked ladies on it. It just doesn't make newcomers want to 'get in that shiat' and it makes us look like we bang old ladies. Because we dont...

Also, your comedic timing is off. Work on the presentation and pick a niche for your jokes. I suggest taking farkers' comments and turning them against us by manipulating them, misquoting them, etc. Make others the laughing stock. Turn us against each other.
The Fark community is about snark and being dickish, but not dicks to hurt other people. Unless you are into politics.

Your account is also only a few months old, so get to know the community even if you just lurk a lot like some of us.

Fark.com is the first place that as a paid professional entertainer I've experienced this sort of backlash. So no, I think I'm fine. A commenter earlier even described Mike Phirman, the original host of WTFark, as a guy who felt forced to be there. He's a pretty well-respected alt-comedian, so yeah, it's disheartening how quick this community is to hate on everything sometimes.

Granted, I understand how internet comments work. I'm fine in what I do and work outside of WTFark as a professional actor/comedy guy, and THANKFULLY these and other comments haven't driven me to suicide or anything.

But if you have children, with our current internet media driven climate, PLEASE don't encourage them to ever make art or entertainment. If you read them, internet comments will take years off your life.

(And overall, I consider this thread to be tame and constructive.)

Yes, I wasn't part of the Fark community before I got this gig, but I've also never shied away from that fact. I was just your typical actor/host/writer/comedy guy in LA doing various gigs and auditioning for stuff all the time. Which, by the way, I'm still doing.

But luckily, 2014 was a good year for me. Shot a Mark Wahlberg movie, shot some commercials, blah, blah blah. And then, I got this gig.

What would you do? Be super superficial and pretend you were there all along? Do the "backwards hat, 'hey guys, I'm one of you!' bullshiat you're talking about? No way. I have no pitch. I'm not the man. I'm just a guy making a show.  I'm not posting this comment on "company time" or "on the clock." I'm not some sort of paid social media manager or some bullshiat.

I'm not on salary and this interaction isn't some paid social media stunt bullshiat. I'm having this conversation on my own time because I'm generally trying to connect to the community, and, as I always do on the internet, and in life, I'm over sharing about myself so that Farkers are like, "oh, he's a just a dude like me, trying his best."

If you view me as suit guy with a backwards hat, then I guess I can't do much about that.

But that's definitely not me...

Damn near everyone on this site is an alt, so learn from them to gain their acceptance. Play a role, take on a persona.. something. Just knock it off with the breaking the fourth wall stuff by saying "I'm an outsider! I have a real-life job and I get paid to make these videos."

For one, I'd stop trying to convince everyone how humble I am. Two, I might want to step back and actually look at the root cause of the negativity. And most importantly I'd immediately stop saying shiat like "I'm just trying to be normally normal with all you normal guys! Fine. Then do it.

You've got a handful of people here spending their time telling you how to make the show better and you know what? None of us are "on the clock" either. In fact, we aren't getting paid at all. Stop acting like you're doing us the favor here.

Are you listening to yourself? Lemme summarize your latest post for you, by paragraph:

1. I'm not a Farker and this is just another gig to me. BTW I'm doing other gigs.

2. Did I mention my other gigs? Cause I've had some. Them I got this one.

3. I'm not faking being a Farker! But I am engaging with you guys... for free. No one is paying me to talk to you guys.

4. I'm doing this for free! Like me dammit!

5. You don't want to like me. Whatever. Doesn't hurt.

I'm fairly sure that's not what you meant, but it *is* what you said. And you aren't listening to what we've said. Want to be accepted by Fark? Step one: don't get defensive and butthurt.

I don't care that you're doing this off the clock. Do you know how much stuff I do "off the clock" so that my paid gig succeeds? So that I'm more valuable to my employer? So I'm more marketable? You really expect me to be impressed that you're here? Seriously? It's your frickin' gig, man. I should hope you'd be here trying to make it more successful, and I'd think you'd be appreciative of *our* being here offering suggestions seeing as how we aren't getting paid for it. Stop expecting me to fawn all over you for gracing us with your presence.

Lotta valid points here... yes, I regret earlier postings. Deeply. Lost sleep over some. Truth bombs. (explode)

But please, just imagine if you were thrust into this situation, as i was, and verbally crucified every time anything you did ever was mentioned, or even close to mentioned. It's weird to deal with. Still is.

But instead of just brushing it off as "internet trolling," as most entertainers do, (and most do), I'm choosing to reach out to it. To deal with it. To try to learn from it and become better. To be vulnerable. Tomake mistakes.

I'm not doing this because I was asked to by some evil suit. Or by Drew. Or by anyone. Doing it cause I want to. Because I want to figure out what I can do to get the support of avid Farkers.

And yes, I do need to put in "more time" as just a Farker. Someone who is just Farking and not skimming for material or defending attacks against my character, work andoverall existence as a human being. I'm working on that all time.

And lastly, if you didn't find me funny or personable, no problem. I can deal with that. I'm not going to be for everyone. But I've been doing this type of stuff for a living for a decade, so as much as it stings when people don't like your work, (yes, it still stings. never stops. even my famous friends have told me that), you know that there are still other people who do like it. Sorry I didn't work for you. At least I work for others.

What is your role going to be in this community?

Who are you going to be in this picture?

If he's going to be a hot young female with big knockers then I'm going to have to start revising my opinions.

And watching WTFark.

brimed03: Fine.

(*facepalm*)

Thanks. Glad I opened myself up here.

You said it yourself- you don't find me funny, and/or personable.

Tried to connect, human-to-human, and you were mean back.

Honestly, I don't need to lose sleep over this.

Life is too short to spend it being mean to people on Internet comment boards.

I wish you the best and hope that outside of this comment thread you are a happy person.

Cause honestly, your comments alone have made me wish I never engaged tonight.

Thanks for bringing hostility and negativity into my life.

Remember, as I've said repeatedly, I'm just a human being.

Just like you.

Peace.

You are seriously not getting it. You think you are, but you're not. You're just digging deeper with each sarcastic dismissal and unsubtle boast. Now you're telling us how long you've been in the business and how you have famous friends, all the while still trying the "I'm so humble and trying SO hard" shtick out of the other side of your mouth. You just can't stop, it seems.

2014-06-09 03:19:01 AM

mikerylander: brimed03: I have to tell ya, that's not it for some of us.

Farking.

We're telling you again, you can't get butthurt on Fark. And you can't expect a lot of sympathy either, not least because we all learned it the hard way; nobody "explained" Fark to us like we're doing for you. People come to Fark as newbies, get slammed around some, and they adjust or they leave. Frankly, most of us lurked for a long time first, so we knew what we were getting into when we began to comment... but it still stings when someone flames you, and Fark does not tolerate whining "ouchie" replies.

You want to succeed with the Fark community? Create an alt account and lurk awhile. Comment a bit. Get to understand it as someone other than Mikerylander. Incorporate what you learn into the show and your Mikerylander account posts.

Or get a new gig. I hear Marky Mark isn't doing underwear ads in Times Square anymore; maybe since you worked with him earlier this year you can get that gig.

"Life is too short to spend it being mean to people on Internet comment boards."

And they hired you to work for Fark dot freaking com?

2014-06-09 03:20:28 AM

insertsnarkyusername: I don't even know Mike Rylander yet somehow I hate him. After the last WTFark thread I commented in I felt a little bad for some of the things I said and resolved to watch this and give it another try. I don't feel sorry anymore; fire him, take any computers that you have footage already shot on and burn them. Then maybe the healing can start.

Thanks!
If you have children, give them my love!
If you don't, you can have all my love yourself!
I LOVE YOU.

You can "open up" on Pinterest. Not here, or at least not like that. That isn't to say Farkers are uncaring. Far from it; when shiat hits the fan you'll see amazing things happen here. But if you're expecting everyone to melt and go all gooey like it's a 3am confession in the freshman dorm, you've misread your audience.

Well, you've already shut your ears and left, so I'm not going to say more on the chance that you might read the last few comments later on.

Good luck-- at your next gig.

What, with your anonymous username everything...
Honestly, I do get it.

Holy crap yes. I hate that I can't cut down the amount of quoted text on mobile. Often I just want to comment on one part of someone's five-part post.

Jesus, are you really going into crybaby asshole mode now? Because it sure looks like it, but we all know you see things a bit differently from up there on your farking high horse.

MIKE: GET IT ALREADY. This. Is not. Abuse. It's unvarnished, it's rough-cut, it's unsugared opinion. All that is true!

But if you'll spend five minutes *not* expecting people to do group hugs, or tell you that you've got a beautiful aura, or whatever the hell it is you're seeking... you just might find some help in making WTFark a success with the home team.

You really think any of us wants to see Fark lose? Are you kidding?

Hey man, I think it's great you have a kid. I think you might even be a good and loving dad, and that's great 'cause the world needs that. But if you really think that has *anything* to do with this thread... wow, I just don't know what to tell ya.

Stop trying to dish out Deep Thoughts in a comment thread about WTFark. It's bad enough that you're channeling Stuart Smalley, without throwing Jack Handey in on top of it.

This. Drew, if you're reading, here's your problem with WTFark. I know the site needs revenue and I'm fine with that, but make sure the brand isn't getting diluted. WTFark needs someone who understands and reflects the community. I think that, in a Fark way, we've been trying to explain that to the guy you've got, but he just doesn't get it. So you're winding up with two different products. Which would be fine if they were unrelated, but they share the Fark name so they need to share the brand identity.

No one much seems to care for this guy (even the positive comments ITT are faint praise) but I hope you'll be able to sit down with him and help him see what we've been trying to explain all night. I have no personal beef with the guy and hope WTFark cam succeed with him. But as of now, he's the main flaw, and at the heart of that is his refusal to "get" the essential character of Fark.

No, I'm actually making a bigger point about the Internet as a whole.
This shiat is new. No generation before us had an online legacy that they are leaving behind.
Something to think about...
Someday, long after we are gone, how we were online will define who we were as people.
I've thought about that a lot, but more so since becoming a dad.

My 15mo isn't a shield, she's my daughter.
And having her in my life has shaped and molded they way I think about how I conduct myself online.
I thought that pointing that out to you might make you think about yourself.

Inward reflection type bullshiat.

Look- I'm not here to make enemies. Exact opposite, in fact.
When I re-read this thread, it was obvious from your Boobies you weren't a fan of mine.
Nothing we can say to each other in an Internet comment thread is going to change that.

You don't like me. I don't know who you are.
And honestly, I don't think we're ever going to get beyond that.

It's cool. It's your right not to like me.
I was merely posing bigger questions, hoping you'd reflect upon our conversation and things that were said.

But like you said, this ain't no Jack Handy / Stuart Smally bullshiat site.
So my bad.

At the end of the day, you had your opinion about WTFark and me and anything I said in this comment thread wasn't going to change that.
My only hope is that people who read through this thread see I wasn't being a prick.
And I honestly don't think I was.
If it came off that way, I apologize.

It's cool. You don't have to like WTFark.
Not everything is for everyone.
But we can still be civil humans toward each other.

Stop - making - this - about - you. Holy shiat.

Lemme put it another way for you: none of us knows you well enough to dislike you. Which also means "not well enough to like you" either, but that's the only part you're focusing on, like this is really a personal thing. It's not. It can't be. We don't know you well enough to like *or* hate you.

You came in here wondering why the Fark community doesn't accept WTFark. You were given honest and constructive criticism. You chose to interpret it all personally. See point one, about how it can't be since we don't know you well enough.

Stop coming here looking for warm caresses and butterfly kisses. That completely misses the Fark character. Fark is a rough and tumble, snarky place whose denizens genuinely care about one another and show that by regularly pushing each other off a cliff because we think fart jokes are funny.

If you can't understand that, then you aren't right for WTFark. Move on and let someone else try to make a success of it.

Of course, assuming you stay true to form, your response will be something like "oh, so you want me to quit, well I could mind you, but I'm not going to because we're such a success right now, but just so you know I totally could and stop hurting my feelings!"

It's - not - about - you.

You should really try that "blend in with the community" idea. But you need a different username for it. I suggest "Poochie died on the way to his home planet" if it's available.

Oh good lord. You're not really giving the whole "golly, the Internet can be such a dehumanizing place" speech are you? That's so 1998. And it's trite as hell. Not to mention patronizing, and since I'm older than you that really doesn't work.

Stop asking for advice you don't really want. That's what this boils down to.

Anyway, he's stomped his foot and announced his intention to leave this thread a half-dozen times now, and evidently that's turned out to be as difficult for him as hearing the advice he asked for... so I guess we'll have to do that for him as well. Have a good night Mentalpatient87, I'm out.

brimed03: You really think any of us wants to see Fark lose? Are you kidding?

brimed03: let's face it, it was doa anyhow

brimed03: none of us knows you well enough to dislike you.

brimed03: I just didn't find you funny. Or personable.

brimed03: the host was so banal, his patter so cookie-cutter and boring, the attempts at humor so forced... sometimes you can just tell right away. You just know this thing is stillborn and you can't watch any more.

brimed03: I have no personal beef with the guy and hope WTFark cam succeed with him.

brimed03: if he's going to be a hot young female with big knockers then I'm going to have to start revising my opinions. And watching WTFark.

brimed03: Good luck-- at your next gig.

Of the 3600+ clicks this post got, you and like 3 other dudes ruined my night.
