An even worse crime is if he was taking pictures of men. Because what's worse than being "massage-anistic" is liking pictures of men.

Not to mention the medium. Photography is the lowest form of art. We should probably prevent him from painting* or writing poetry about anyone's bodies because someone might be getting off somewhere.

Well, here's the thing.  Remember that kid in high school?  The one that thought his jokes were HILARIOUS, but fell flat and died every time?  You know that guy.  He'd tell the same damned joke in a thousand different ways.  Because he found it funny, he figured everyone would find it funny.  But they didn't.  So he did it over, and over, and over, and over again, all in slightly different ways, fully expecting people to finally "get it".  What he never understood is everybody "got it", they just didn't want it.   The problem wasn't in how he was saying it.  It was what was being said.  It just wasn't funny.  The only thing common to every failed retelling of the joke was HIM.

FarkTV is like that.  It doesn't understand why we don't "get" the sweat and the dead man's balls.  We got it ages ago.  We just don't want it.

I watched 30 seconds of one episode. I know, I know: hardly fair to base judgments on that... but it was bad. The host was so banal, his patter so cookie-cutter and boring, the attempts at humor so forced... sometimes you can just tell right away. You just know this thing is stillborn and you can't watch any more.

Actually, if I had to guess, I'd say it's more about increasing various web metrics (like clicks and time on page, and revisits etc.) as well as broadening the brand horizons.  Drew 'gets' people don't like it, but just like the 'HOW ONE HOUSE MOM DISCOVERED 8 CRAZY WAYS TO LOSE 2 POUNDS IN A SECOND THAT THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT!!!' ads, it's never about the savvy consumer, it's about getting as many clicks as possible, and that's just lowest common denominator.

So no, it doesn't (really) matter that FarkTv or WTFark are 'that kid' from high school. They're going to keep getting schlepped around every year or so because Drew has said historically Fark's not a huge money maker.

Actually, this show is called WTFark and it's only been what it's been since March, so to assume it's anything like Fark TV, or to assume it's like anything what happened prior, that's like using high school experiences to analogize adulthood.

Also, the show is for a very wide audience, wider than active regulars of Total Fark discussion, and I didn't realize that you were qualified to speak on behalf of everyone on the internet. Did I miss a memo?

Farkers are a fickle bunch.

after watching a few of these, but not commenting in many, it finally dawned on me who you were reminding me of, and it was Jim J. Bullock.

I don't know if you've ever heard that before, and I don't mean it negatively, or even positively I guess, it was just, "aha! Monroe from Too Close for Comfort"

and then just right now it hit me what the music for these reminded me of:

deleted scene Superman IV: Quest for Peace

(if you've never seen this deleted scene, it's the first "Nuclear Man", and/or an attempt at introducing a "Bizarro" character).

anyway, I've watched this deleted scene hundreds of times, and when these WTFark videos started happening, I couldn't put my finger on what the theme music was reminding me of.

attention Hollywood: Jim J. Bullock as Bizarro. MAKE IT HAPPEN!

If Farkers want us to involve them, we will.

We WANT to involve the community.

It just seemed like the community hated us.

Which sucks, since our show is a mass audience forward video personification of the community.

Depends on what you keep track of. One of the FarkTV guys was in a tv episode of Homeland.  Dan Mengini

Another was on a weird tv series short I can't remember the name of right now. produced by Mengini on the cartoon network.  Sean Watkins is that one's name.

Mike, you are the unfortunate victim of FarkTV, the project that came long before WTFark. It seems many Farkers are jumping on the train of hating these side projects... and while FarkTV deserved the skewering, I think it set the bar very high for anything that followed on, as in, too high to ever satisfy many Farkers.

That's a shame, really. While WTFark isn't old-school Talk Soup funny, or even Tosh.0 or Wheaton Project levels of funny (and slickness, which is really what this is probably about), for what it is, I think it is fine. I was all for shutting down FarkTV (along with others like Rann Xerox, who's STNG reference has been shamelessly hijacked by the posers), which was a poorly acted skit show. WTFark doesn't try and aim as high as FarkTV, which is smart.

While WTFark is far from perfect, and at times, cringe-worthy, I don't think it deserves the vitriol that it has been getting. In fact, I imagine if many of these Farkers would try and contribute some real critical feedback, you'd probably have a shot at improving things considerably. Instead, these threads get hijacked by new Farkers who missed being part of the anti-FarkTV mob and want to be a part of something destructive, because they think that makes them "real Farkers". Notice Rann Xerox has not commented on any of these WTFark threads, nor most of the people who drove FarkTV back into the dark recesses of hell from whence it spawned. FarkTV != WTFark! ORA.TV isn't SuperDeluxxe.

Ah well, as I said, you may have more misses than hits on your episodes, but I have nothing against WTFark! and wish you guys the best. Hopefully, they will improve (The creepy beach photographer story still has me confused, were you really the guy they kicked out? Why exactly were you there?). It would also be good to link to the original thread in the video description (I never saw the Gnome story on Fark), which helps your viewers who have not actually visited Fark get started.

I actually liked some of the female commentators, and I think mixing up the hosts is a decent idea. The biggest thing is to go back and try and give yourselves a good critical review, tweaking the things that seem to fall flat. You won't please people who hate it - as I said, many posting here hate it for no other reason than that they think it is "cool" - but if you can find a few people around ORA.TV that think it's "meh" and get them to give you honest feedback, you'd be surprised how quickly you can improve the jokes, delivery and edits.

At the end of the day, we just want to be a little piece of the Fark community.
We're open for suggestion, we're open for input.
But we're here, and we're not going anywhere.

So, maybe we all become friends?

We love to hate on things and poke fun at them. Taking away our ability to comment kind of subverted the entire purpose of fark.

At that point it is exploitation of our snark...

Hence the reason every good thread has this posted at least once.

SuperDeluxe.  Fark TV.  These are your predecessors.  These were constantly shoved into our faces.  These were terrible.  Your show could be "slightly good", and it's still gonna kill you.  Simply because of the presentation.  Rather than have it's own category, it's put in random catagories, comments are disabled, and they seem to jump the list so it's near the top.  Like the previous two, it's being shoved into our faces, yet again.  So it's round three of the sweat and the dead man's balls.  It ain't about you personally.  It's about how it's being done.  It's round three of the same thing.  If you wanna separate yourself from that horrible ancestorship, you gotta present it in a different way.  Cut the association.

Oh... and one more thing, I think it might be pretty cool to do a bit more than just be jokey - i.e. if somebody has posted more info in the thread, mentioning that in the episode would be kind of cool. An example of this is the creepy photog story which none of us viewers could tell if you were making a joke about being the guy, or if you really were the guy. Don't be afraid to be serious for a few moments, or to explain something. Making the viewers confused just turns off viewers.

Another example might be to provide some tidbit of followup information that some Farker has dug up since the thread posted... many times I read a story, and some critical point has been left out that some Farker with a GED in the story's subject brings up - and changes the whole focus of the story.

LesserEvil: mikerylander: Mark Ratner: I stopped watching WTFark when he no longer included FARK commenters in the vids. I don't post a lot, so when I got a mention, it was a glorious moment. Like I had finally hit the big time.

Your comment is why we included Fark comments in our videos.
The comments that are pure vitriol is why we stopped.

In general?  People don't like being monetized.  We don't like ads shoved in our faces.  It's bad enough we've got paid links we can't even soundly mock anymore because the comments were disabled being put on the 'boards. It's bad enough random places suddenly and suspiciously have their own tags made and get multiple greenlights. This sort of thing kinda gives me that vibe.  There's tab-room up top.  Why not put in a tab that doesn't cycle out by day posted?  That way it's where it belongs, it doesn't protrude into other categories, and people looking for you don't have to play guess-the-sub-tab.

One fix I'd like is an option for comments through Roku. That's where I watch the videos.  By the time I remembered to go to the computer and log in in order to find the video and comment, a couple of days had passed.

This isn't a bad idea, either. I realize it isn't always practical, though. Some stories need a BS filter, or Gaydar display, too - not sure what sort of graphic or the best delivery might be, though; just remember snark rules on Fark.

Whatever you do, don't pander to the Bronies, though... no need to piss them off, either, but never, ever pander to them. They are a part of the Fark ecosystem like the mosquitos that bother me when I hike. I try and ignore them mostly, and avoid known spawning grounds (Like Broncos and Colts football threads)

I wouldn't mind them if they hadn't disabled the comments to them.  They were there at first.  Then they were taken away.  It's like, "You're good enough to make revenue from, but not good enough to care what you have to say about it, or the product."  I understand why they'd do that, they don't wanna scare away advertisers.  But then it comes down to what is more important, the community, or the ad dollars.  And we know which way that went.

The silly part is, that I was late on the FarkTV bandwagon. So until one video had that little "typing" sound and a headline slowly appearing, I didn't know they were based on actual headlines.  All of them were just random things to watch.

There are several channels on youtube which I click periodically, and most of their videos make me cringe.  FarkTV was basically a series of one shots parody channel, to me.  And some I skipped because the subject didn't appeal.

Ok.  Watched it.  Not nearly as bad as FarkTV or SuperDeluxe.  I appreciate the use of sarcasm, but you put a little too much mmmrph into it.  Sarcasm is like a knife.  Slight, straightforward, cutting, and sharp.  The power for a sarcastic thrust doesn't come from from the enthusiastic thrust, but rather from the cutting edge.  Take a step back from the pitching line, throw up a lawn chair, then sit back hire some neighborhood kids to kick the target in the junk.  Metaphorically speaking, of course.

You need a little work, but you're absolutely not hopeless.  I suggest you study a little Stephen Colbert.  Ignore the political bent of it, and just focus on his preparation and delivery.  Many times he'll spend a good amount of time coaxing his target into stabbing range, then let them blunder into the blade themselves.

Meh.  I'm rambling.  You get the idea.  Keep at it!

Nah.  Youtube has some seriously good stuff on there.  Do a search on "24 hour tag".  Skip to the 9 minute mark.  Find the one that has english subtitles and is an hour and fifty-three minutes long.  You'll thank me later.

You know what's definitely NOT enticing me toward your videos? Whining about negative feedback, bragging about your numbers growing, and smugly assuring me that you're not going anywhere anyway in every other post. It's not very welcoming for someone who is apparently looking to include everybody. And yeah, like Cpl said, I'm kind of tired of all the sponsored, monetized crap that's been happening for the past few years. It's like my favorite hang out spot has been crowded in by carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen, and this new thing is just another annoying guy with a booth with his eye on my wallet. (Or that's the first reaction, anyway)

At some point maybe.  Just seeing individual descriptions in the youtube list of it isn't appealing to me right now.  You're talking to someone who turned on the tv one night, went to netflix through roku, surfed through every single show and movie available.  And then mumbled "There's nothing on tv" followed by slapping myself in the head.

Then I turned it off and went to read a book.

The video clip is a twenty-four hour long "punishment" game in Japan where the penalty for being caught goes up to and including being kicked by a Thai kick boxer or being dragged out of bed and being whacked in the junk by a "dick machine".

I'm also the guy who after surfing netflix yet again, went to youtube through chromecast on my tv and watched all of the black and white The Shadow serials starting with The Shadow Strikes.  I followed that up with watching a very muddled set of movies called The Martian Chronicles.

At some point I will. Not saying I won't.  I just tend to be very odd in what appeals to me sometimes.  I went through a Saturday once watching car wreck video collections on youtube. The type where everyone survives with scratches and or by the skin of their teeth.

THIS

I tried to like WTFark. First it was the nervous "I don't want to be here" guy trying his best. Then it was that British Elvis lovechild woman who couldn't stop her lips from sneering after every sentence.

I appreciate Fark trying something new... but it didn't work.

Mentalpatient87: You know what's definitely NOT enticing me toward your videos? Whining about negative feedback, bragging about your numbers growing, and smugly assuring me that you're not going anywhere anyway in every other post. It's not very welcoming for someone who is apparently looking to include everybody. And yeah, like Cpl said, I'm kind of tired of all the sponsored, monetized crap that's been happening for the past few years. It's like my favorite hang out spot has been crowded in by carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen, and this new thing is just another annoying guy with a booth with his eye on my wallet. (Or that's the first reaction, anyway)

Whoa. Sorry it came off that way. Not trying to whine, just engaging Farkers, as their inclusion means something to me. And that's not a company mandated thing, just my personal goal.

Also, definitely not "bragging" about our numbers. Maybe you're late to the party, but the constant feedback ANY type of Fark video project has gotten is "Stop Trying To Make (___) Happen." That's just my way of saying we are happening, we have happened, and we will continue to happen. Definitely NOT a braggy thing. Just a, "hey, let's not fight. You're here. You're the mothership. We're a weird little cruiser ship. Even lower in class than a Y-Wing. But let's be friends" sort of thing.

And yes, including everybody is an impossibility, but it's important to me that Farkers know that I understand the history of failed video Fark projects I am fighting against, BUT, I do hope to make something they enjoy.

Monetization, Sponsorship, bullshiat, bullshiat, bullshiat. I get it. Luckily, I'm not a suit. And I don't deal with that stuff. I'm just looking to make a funny, silly, weird news web series people enjoy.

FarkTV is like that.  It doesn't understand why we don't "get" the sweat and the dead man's balls.  We got it ages ago.  We just don't want it.

I have to tell ya, that's not it for some of us. Not for me, anyway.

I never saw FarkTV. I've never *heard* of SuperDeluxe. So I came into this with very little bias.

Simply put, the little I was able to watch of WTFark was... well, ok: it wasn't just that it was bad. The first season of many new things are bad, so that's ok.

What did I hate so much? What turned me off to it? Farker LesserEvil may have hit on it when he mentioned Talk Soup and Tosh.0. I would also throw in the "Illustrated FMLs." I would also point out Mikerylander's comment from earlier ITT: "our show is a mass audience forward video personification of the community." What the what?

The episode I tried to watch immediately felt like a corporatized low-budget knockoff of things already being done to death. It was like drinking Mr. Pibb-- with apologies to the Mr. Pibb fans out there... both of you. It didn't connect to the Fark community. It sure didn't "personify" the Fark community. It pseudo-Farkerized the other shows (cable and online) mentioned. And, I'm sorry mike, but I just didn't find you funny. Or personable. You might very well be, in person, but it didn't come across on camera. I immediately didn't like the show because it was generic. It was formulaic, rehashed, and just felt like it was there to cash in on what's already being done elsewhere.

And yeah, taking away the ability to comment just distanced WTFark from the community even more. Ever see Eastwood's "Gran Torino," where he teaches the kid how to give the guys a hard time as a way of earning acceptance? And that you have to be able to take ribbing from the guys if you want to be respected? It's like Farker thehobbes said above: at least once a thread someone posts a welcometofark.jpg. By disallowing comments, you immediately lost Fark's respect.

And even worse, the handful of times I've ever seen you post to Fark, Mike, it's been in WTFark threads and it's always been defensive. Fark does not respect butthurt, Mike. Telling Farker Cpl.D above that you weren't aware that he spoke for everyone on the Internet? Butthurt. Your huffy reply to my earlier post ITT about how you're "syndicated by the Huffington Post and AOL?" Butthurt.

Which brings me to the second thing. You would know all this if you spent any real time in the comment threads. You want to claim to be a "video personification of the community?" Then stop the industry-speak (like that phrase) and actually join the community. You can just lurk, that's fine. But if you spent any real time in the threads, I wouldn't need to be telling you the stuff I'm saying here. The Fark community is not subtle. You'd pick up on it all really fast.

And before you say that you spend lots of time on Fark... I'm not talking about skimming the posts and comments for show material. You aren't learning about the community that way. Put the show aside and really spend a few hours a week just... Farking.

A salient point.  Fark isn't the links or the catchy headlines.  Fark is the place where we chew the articles and hack up headlines.  Fark is where we discuss things.  Fark is interaction.  For good and for ill.

My 2c:

Don't care about what we have to say... but do care about what we have to say.
Its like when we tell our disgustingly obese girlfriends that they have to lose weight or else we're going to leave her: Its seen as incredibly mean and rude, but deep down we mean the best. We want our fat girlfriends to lose weight because we don't want them to crush us in our sleep if she rolls over on us.

And we care about their health. Or something.

No, we don't care about you. We care about Fark and if WTFark is the public outreach center handing out condoms to the teenagers in the neighborhood, we expect the condoms not to have pictures of 90 year old naked ladies on it. It just doesn't make newcomers want to 'get in that shiat' and it makes us look like we bang old ladies. Because we dont...

Also, your comedic timing is off. Work on the presentation and pick a niche for your jokes. I suggest taking farkers' comments and turning them against us by manipulating them, misquoting them, etc. Make others the laughing stock. Turn us against each other.
The Fark community is about snark and being dickish, but not dicks to hurt other people. Unless you are into politics.

Your account is also only a few months old, so get to know the community even if you just lurk a lot like some of us.

Fark.com is the first place that as a paid professional entertainer I've experienced this sort of backlash. So no, I think I'm fine. A commenter earlier even described Mike Phirman, the original host of WTFark, as a guy who felt forced to be there. He's a pretty well-respected alt-comedian, so yeah, it's disheartening how quick this community is to hate on everything sometimes.

Granted, I understand how internet comments work. I'm fine in what I do and work outside of WTFark as a professional actor/comedy guy, and THANKFULLY these and other comments haven't driven me to suicide or anything.

But if you have children, with our current internet media driven climate, PLEASE don't encourage them to ever make art or entertainment. If you read them, internet comments will take years off your life.

(And overall, I consider this thread to be tame and constructive.)

Yes, I wasn't part of the Fark community before I got this gig, but I've also never shied away from that fact. I was just your typical actor/host/writer/comedy guy in LA doing various gigs and auditioning for stuff all the time. Which, by the way, I'm still doing.

But luckily, 2014 was a good year for me. Shot a Mark Wahlberg movie, shot some commercials, blah, blah blah. And then, I got this gig.

What would you do? Be super superficial and pretend you were there all along? Do the "backwards hat, 'hey guys, I'm one of you!' bullshiat you're talking about? No way. I have no pitch. Damn near everyone on this site is an alt, so learn from them to gain their acceptance. Play a role, take on a persona.. something. Just knock it off with the breaking the fourth wall stuff by saying "I'm an outsider! I have a real-life job and I get paid to make these videos."

For one, I'd stop trying to convince everyone how humble I am. Two, I might want to step back and actually look at the root cause of the negativity. And most importantly I'd immediately stop saying shiat like "I'm just trying to be normally normal with all you normal guys! Fine. Then do it.

You've got a handful of people here spending their time telling you how to make the show better and you know what? None of us are "on the clock" either. In fact, we aren't getting paid at all. Stop acting like you're doing us the favor here.

Are you listening to yourself? Lemme summarize your latest post for you, by paragraph:

1. I'm not a Farker and this is just another gig to me. BTW I'm doing other gigs.

2. Did I mention my other gigs? Cause I've had some. Them I got this one.

3. I'm not faking being a Farker! But I am engaging with you guys... for free. No one is paying me to talk to you guys.

4. I'm doing this for free! Like me dammit!

I'm fairly sure that's not what you meant, but it *is* what you said. And you aren't listening to what we've said. Want to be accepted by Fark? Step one: don't get defensive and butthurt.

I don't care that you're doing this off the clock. Do you know how much stuff I do "off the clock" so that my paid gig succeeds? So that I'm more valuable to my employer? So I'm more marketable? You really expect me to be impressed that you're here? Seriously? It's your frickin' gig, man. I should hope you'd be here trying to make it more successful, and I'd think you'd be appreciative of *our* being here offering suggestions seeing as how we aren't getting paid for it. Stop expecting me to fawn all over you for gracing us with your presence.

brimed03: I have to tell ya, that's not it for some of us.

Farking.

Lotta valid points here... yes, I regret earlier postings. Deeply. Lost sleep over some. Truth bombs. (explode)

But please, just imagine if you were thrust into this situation, as i was, and verbally crucified every time anything you did ever was mentioned, or even close to mentioned. It's weird to deal with. Still is.

But instead of just brushing it off as "internet trolling," as most entertainers do, (and most do), I'm choosing to reach out to it. To deal with it. To try to learn from it and become better. To be vulnerable. Tomake mistakes.

I'm not doing this because I was asked to by some evil suit. Or by Drew. Or by anyone. Doing it cause I want to. Because I want to figure out what I can do to get the support of avid Farkers.

And yes, I do need to put in "more time" as just a Farker. Someone who is just Farking and not skimming for material or defending attacks against my character, work andoverall existence as a human being. I'm working on that all time.

And lastly, if you didn't find me funny or personable, no problem. I can deal with that. I'm not going to be for everyone. But I've been doing this type of stuff for a living for a decade, so as much as it stings when people don't like your work, (yes, it still stings. never stops. even my famous friends have told me that), you know that there are still other people who do like it. Sorry I didn't work for you. At least I work for others.

DuudeStanky: mikerylander:

What would you do? Be super superficial and pretend you were there all along? Do the "backwards hat, 'hey guys, I'm one of you!' bullshiat you're talking about? No way. I have no pitch. I'm not the man. I'm just a guy making a show.  I'm not posting this comment on "company time" or "on the clock." I'm not some sort of paid social media manager or some bullshiat.

I'm not on salary and this interaction isn't some paid social media stunt bullshiat. I'm having this conversation on my own time because I'm generally trying to connect to the community, and, as I always do on the internet, and in life, I'm over sharing about myself so that Farkers are like, "oh, he's a just a dude like me, trying his best."

If you view me as suit guy with a backwards hat, then I guess I can't do much about that.

But that's definitely not me...

Damn near everyone on this site is an alt, so learn from them to gain their acceptance. Play a role, take on a persona.. something. Just knock it off with the breaking the fourth wall stuff by saying "I'm an outsider! I have a real-life job and I get paid to make these videos."

What is your role going to be in this community?

Who are you going to be in this picture?

If he's going to be a hot young female with big knockers then I'm going to have to start revising my opinions.

And watching WTFark.

brimed03: Fine.

5. You don't want to like me. Whatever. Doesn't hurt.

I'm fairly sure that's not what you meant, but it *is* what you said. And you aren't listening to what we've said. Want to be accepted by Fark? Step one: don't get defensive and butthurt.

(*facepalm*)

Thanks. Glad I opened myself up here.

You said it yourself- you don't find me funny, and/or personable.

Tried to connect, human-to-human, and you were mean back.

Honestly, I don't need to lose sleep over this.

Life is too short to spend it being mean to people on Internet comment boards.

I wish you the best and hope that outside of this comment thread you are a happy person.

Cause honestly, your comments alone have made me wish I never engaged tonight.

Thanks for bringing hostility and negativity into my life.

Remember, as I've said repeatedly, I'm just a human being.

Just like you.

Peace.

You are seriously not getting it. You think you are, but you're not. You're just digging deeper with each sarcastic dismissal and unsubtle boast. Now you're telling us how long you've been in the business and how you have famous friends, all the while still trying the "I'm so humble and trying SO hard" shtick out of the other side of your mouth. You just can't stop, it seems.

We're telling you again, you can't get butthurt on Fark. And you can't expect a lot of sympathy either, not least because we all learned it the hard way; nobody "explained" Fark to us like we're doing for you. People come to Fark as newbies, get slammed around some, and they adjust or they leave. Frankly, most of us lurked for a long time first, so we knew what we were getting into when we began to comment... but it still stings when someone flames you, and Fark does not tolerate whining "ouchie" replies.

You want to succeed with the Fark community? Create an alt account and lurk awhile. Comment a bit. Get to understand it as someone other than Mikerylander. Incorporate what you learn into the show and your Mikerylander account posts.

Or get a new gig. I hear Marky Mark isn't doing underwear ads in Times Square anymore; maybe since you worked with him earlier this year you can get that gig.

insertsnarkyusername: I don't even know Mike Rylander yet somehow I hate him. After the last WTFark thread I commented in I felt a little bad for some of the things I said and resolved to watch this and give it another try. I don't feel sorry anymore; fire him, take any computers that you have footage already shot on and burn them. Then maybe the healing can start.

Thanks!

I LOVE YOU.

You can "open up" on Pinterest. Not here, or at least not like that. That isn't to say Farkers are uncaring. Far from it; when shiat hits the fan you'll see amazing things happen here. But if you're expecting everyone to melt and go all gooey like it's a 3am confession in the freshman dorm, you've misread your audience.

Well, you've already shut your ears and left, so I'm not going to say more on the chance that you might read the last few comments later on.

Good luck-- at your next gig.

What, with your anonymous username everything...
Honestly, I do get it.

MIKE: GET IT ALREADY. This. Is not. Abuse. It's unvarnished, it's rough-cut, it's unsugared opinion. All that is true!

But if you'll spend five minutes *not* expecting people to do group hugs, or tell you that you've got a beautiful aura, or whatever the hell it is you're seeking... you just might find some help in making WTFark a success with the home team.

You really think any of us wants to see Fark lose? Are you kidding?

Really? So now you're holding up your 15-month-old child as a shield against criticism? You expect me to feel bad because because you have a toddler?

Hey man, I think it's great you have a kid. I think you might even be a good and loving dad, and that's great 'cause the world needs that. But if you really think that has *anything* to do with this thread... wow, I just don't know what to tell ya.

Stop trying to dish out Deep Thoughts in a comment thread about WTFark. It's bad enough that you're channeling Stuart Smalley, without throwing Jack Handey in on top of it.

This. Drew, if you're reading, here's your problem with WTFark. I know the site needs revenue and I'm fine with that, but make sure the brand isn't getting diluted. WTFark needs someone who understands and reflects the community. I think that, in a Fark way, we've been trying to explain that to the guy you've got, but he just doesn't get it. So you're winding up with two different products. Which would be fine if they were unrelated, but they share the Fark name so they need to share the brand identity.

No one much seems to care for this guy (even the positive comments ITT are faint praise) but I hope you'll be able to sit down with him and help him see what we've been trying to explain all night. I have no personal beef with the guy and hope WTFark cam succeed with him. But as of now, he's the main flaw, and at the heart of that is his refusal to "get" the essential character of Fark.

brimed03: Really? So now you're holding up your 15-month-old child as a shield against criticism? You expect me to feel bad because because you have a toddler?

No, I'm actually making a bigger point about the Internet as a whole.
This shiat is new. No generation before us had an online legacy that they are leaving behind.
Something to think about...
Someday, long after we are gone, how we were online will define who we were as people.
I've thought about that a lot, but more so since becoming a dad.

My 15mo isn't a shield, she's my daughter.
And having her in my life has shaped and molded they way I think about how I conduct myself online.
I thought that pointing that out to you might make you think about yourself.

Inward reflection type bullshiat.

Look- I'm not here to make enemies. Exact opposite, in fact.
When I re-read this thread, it was obvious from your Boobies you weren't a fan of mine.
Nothing we can say to each other in an Internet comment thread is going to change that.

You don't like me. I don't know who you are.
And honestly, I don't think we're ever going to get beyond that.

It's cool. It's your right not to like me.
I was merely posing bigger questions, hoping you'd reflect upon our conversation and things that were said.

But like you said, this ain't no Jack Handy / Stuart Smally bullshiat site.
So my bad.

As you were...

If that is truly what you think, then so be it... I beg to differ, but we all have the right to have our own opinions.
At the end of the day, you had your opinion about WTFark and me and anything I said in this comment thread wasn't going to change that.
My only hope is that people who read through this thread see I wasn't being a prick.
And I honestly don't think I was.
If it came off that way, I apologize.

It's cool. You don't have to like WTFark.
Not everything is for everyone.
But we can still be civil humans toward each other.

mikerylander: Mentalpatient87: You were told many times to stop acting like a suit, grow some thicker skin, and actually make an attempt to give a shiat about the community. Nobody to blame but yourself if you still haven't gotten that. Again, prick.

Thanks!
Just re-read the entire thread.
I'm okay with who I am.
And I know I'm not a prick.
Sorry for (whatever I did). I'll try to not do it again...

Stop - making - this - about - you. Holy shiat.

Lemme put it another way for you: none of us knows you well enough to dislike you. Which also means "not well enough to like you" either, but that's the only part you're focusing on, like this is really a personal thing. It's not. It can't be. We don't know you well enough to like *or* hate you.

You came in here wondering why the Fark community doesn't accept WTFark. You were given honest and constructive criticism. You chose to interpret it all personally. See point one, about how it can't be since we don't know you well enough.

Stop coming here looking for warm caresses and butterfly kisses. That completely misses the Fark character. Fark is a rough and tumble, snarky place whose denizens genuinely care about one another and show that by regularly pushing each other off a cliff because we think fart jokes are funny.

If you can't understand that, then you aren't right for WTFark. Move on and let someone else try to make a success of it.

Of course, assuming you stay true to form, your response will be something like "oh, so you want me to quit, well I could mind you, but I'm not going to because we're such a success right now, but just so you know I totally could and stop hurting my feelings!"

It's - not - about - you.

I didn't think you were being a prick until the fourth or fifth time you lorded you status as a shill over us and then attacked me for my "anonymous username" in an unsubtle way of trying to shame me. And it doesn't help that you're still trying to play the poor victim.

You should really try that "blend in with the community" idea. But you need a different username for it. I suggest "Poochie died on the way to his home planet" if it's available.

2014-06-09 04:20:17 AM

mikerylander: brimed03: Really?

Oh good lord. You're not really giving the whole "golly, the Internet can be such a dehumanizing place" speech are you? That's so 1998. And it's trite as hell. Not to mention patronizing, and since I'm older than you that really doesn't work.

Stop asking for advice you don't really want. That's what this boils down to.

Anyway, he's stomped his foot and announced his intention to leave this thread a half-dozen times now, and evidently that's turned out to be as difficult for him as hearing the advice he asked for... so I guess we'll have to do that for him as well. Have a good night Mentalpatient87, I'm out.

brimed03: I have no personal beef with the guy and hope WTFark cam succeed with him.

brimed03: if he's going to be a hot young female with big knockers then I'm going to have to start revising my opinions. And watching WTFark.

brimed03: Good luck-- at your next gig.

mikerylander: I honestly have no part of the distribution model. I just go to to work everyday, find a Farked up story, and do a destruction of its local news video coverage.

Oh, and lots and lots of meth. The WTFark office is a big meth den. Duh. Obvi.

Behind the scenes at the WTFark office:
stmedia.startribune.com

Oh, you said meth. Sorry.

As for your poll -- I like hearing funny comments by other Farkers highlighted. And I have no clue what should be included in the video tomorrow. Since my sense of humor runs to either either end of the "bafflingly obscure/horribly obvious" spectrum, seasoned with bad puns and mangled song lyrics, that is for the best.

2014-06-09 08:57:43 AM

mikerylander: But luckily, 2014 was a good year for me. Shot a Mark Wahlberg movie, shot some commercials, blah, blah blah. And then, I got this gig.

Was it Transformers? It was transformers wasn't it?

Reading back on the thread, if anyone else but the WTFark guy with his real name had posted that much defensive, easy to pick apart material, I'd assume he was baiting us... like a master. So did we all get hooked or does he not get the anonymity of message boards for entertainment and free flow of ideas?

The piss-poor attempts to monetize Fark shall continue until morale improves™

brimed03: Mentalpatient87: Sure wish they'd spend more time and money making mobile Fark more functional with quotes and stuff instead of hiring more advertisers...

Holy crap yes. I hate that I can't cut down the amount of quoted text on mobile. Often I just want to comment on one part of someone's five-part post.

Oh. I keep forgetting that exists.  Tried it once.  But I don't like forums of any sort through mobile. None of them work the way they do on a pc. I'm just spoiled.

So, basic boil down.

"How dare you operate with maybe, if lucky, 4 times the budget per episode of college student Frankie who posts about chicken"

"Write better. I don't care if you're the only writer.  Fire yourself and find someone else.  How, if you're fired? figure it out."

"People have opinions about how I do things with WTFark, why can't they be coherent."

Cpl.D: I haven't really watched your videos, mikerylander.  So frankly, I ain't being fair to you.  It's rather jarring to see a third incarnation of FarkTV, so I dismissed it out of hand.

Give me a while to get the curmudgeon out and I'll sit down and take a look.  Give you another shot.

This is me in a caption, I guess.

I saw WTFARK! and went 'oh, FarkTV is back' and assumed it had to be pure shiat.

Haven't bothered watching an episode because of the previous association. Maybe a good PR campaign that isn't overly forceful and in your face would help. Like: 'Ya, we know, we're not farktv, please at least try watching us before showering us in your bile'.

If you want to win over farkers you have to have commenting. It will also increase your views of the video.

Yeah some of the people on here will trash it on principle, but someone *may* watch it and make some witty remark about something in it, or reference somewhere  in it there is a MILF, etc. Once that happens, other commenters lurking in the comments will go ahead and click it. Same concept as the daily fail's "hot" standard. Some will venture forth to check, and with some people actually watching the segment, more information is generated and the conversation continues. This will then increase comment count and then increase people interested as to what is going on in the thread, generating more clicks.

Yeah you will take criticism, but view this as retarded internet fight club. Being new, you'll take it personally and let it get you depressed, after a few weeks, you'll learn to be self-deprecating and able to make your enemies look like potato.

Taking away the commenting section makes this as easily ignored as (sponsored partner) was.

Personally I find it easier to sit in my lazy boy chair and click the video link on the Ora Tv roku channel that has the WTFark videos.  The tv is bigger.

You know, I did a similar post in response to a known Fark troll recently and it got deleted.  Apparently I was "trolling another Farker."  Nice to see the mods play favorites.

Anyhow, once again, and despite everyone telling you otherwise, you've managed to make this All About You, Mike.  So in yet another exercise in futility, let's break it down for you:

brimed03: You really think any of us wants to see Fark lose? Are you kidding?
brimed03: let's face it, it was doa anyhow

Two different things, Mike.  So, no discrepancies there.  And even if they weren't, I can want to see Fark succeed and still point out where it is failing.  Criticism is a healthy part of loving a person or a place, Mike.  You should really endeavor to understand that.  Really.

brimed03: none of us knows you well enough to dislike you.
brimed03: I just didn't find you funny. Or personable.
brimed03: the host was so banal, his patter so cookie-cutter and boring, the attempts at humor so forced... sometimes you can just tell right away. You just know this thing is stillborn and you can't watch any more.

Comment #1: I don't know you personally and therefore have no grudge against you
Comments #2 & 3: But I do have an opinion of you professionally, which is that you suck as host of WTFark and you don't understand the Fark community, as evidenced repeatedly in these threads.

Personal vs. professional, Mike.  If you can't distinguish the two, you're in the wrong business; entertainment is going to eat you up.  But then, almost every profession requires separating them and not taking professional criticism personally, so I don't really know what you're best suited for.  Maybe you could be a tester in a bubble factory, you can verify that the bubbles don't hurt when they touch you.

brimed03: I have no personal beef with the guy and hope WTFark cam succeed with him.
brimed03: if he's going to be a hot young female with big knockers then I'm going to have to start revising my opinions. And watching WTFark.

Hey, Francis?  Lighten up.  The second comment was a joke response to a popular Fark meme posted above by Farker Duude Stanky.  Seriously, have you even thought about how hard you're working to be hurt here?  You're inventing things to be hurt about.

I'm tempted to finish with a little sampling of your hypocrisy ITT, but that wouldn't do any good.  The fact is, Mike, this entire thread can be summed up as follows:

Fark: Here's what we didn't like about WTFark
YOU: We stopped allowing comments because you hurt my feelings... all we want to do is connect to the Fark core members
Fark: No, no... we're just telling you what we don't like about WTFark so far
YOU: Ouch!  That hurts me feelings.  All you guys ever do is hurt my feelings
Fark: Wait, what?  No, we're telling you why WTFark doesn't seem to connect with the core members... like you asked us to?
YOU: That's it, I'm leaving because you guys are hurtful and mean
Fark: Uh, well, admittedly we can be a little mean, that's kind of how Fark works; that's what we're trying to explain, you're not going to get coddled here and if you can just get past that you'll do fine
YOU: That's it, I'm leaving because you guys are hurtful and mean
Fark: Yeah, you said that.  But just fyi, this isn't about you; it's about how to make WTFark work
YOU: You know, I worked with Mark Wahlberg earlier this year.  I have other gigs.  I can find another gig like that!  But let's make WTFark work I'm really committed to it
Fark: Yeah, you sound really committed to it
YOU: That's it, I'm leaving because you guys are hurtful and mean
Fark: Sighhh...

Mike, I had no personal feelings about you before this.  Now, I do.  I think you're a self-centered, coddled fool who wants an audience of suck-ups and who views WTFark as just a platform for exposure to be leveraged as quickly as possible into other jobs.  You couldn't care less about Fark.com or its core members.  You're absolutely incapable of separating your ego from your work and so are utterly incapable of taking feedback and criticism.

Me and those "three other dudes" who ruined your night?  Did you ever stop to think that we've spent literally hours conversing with you about WTFark?  We're not getting money or career advancement for this.  And if all we were doing was trolling you, frankly it would be like sandblasting a cracker, and about as much fun.  If you could think about something other than yourself for even a minute, you'd realize that we're the best allies you've got, because we evidently do care about Fark.  The problem here is that you don't care about Fark, and why would you?  You don't spend any time on the site.  You don't participate in the comments.  You think of it as just another one of your gigs, and if it doesn't work out, well, you have other irons in the fire.

You know what Fark does really well?  Fark is really good at sniffing out the phonies.  That's why WTFark is failing under your leadership.  Because you aren't genuine and it comes across instantly.

Go on, Mike.  I know all you've been doing as you read this is formulating your butthurt response.  You haven't genuinely listened to anything we've said so far, so why would I expect you to read this with an open mind?  My last post, I was done with this thread for the night.  Now, I'm just done with this thread.  See you in the funny papers, funny guy.

2014-06-09 02:45:34 PM
Well that thread escalated quickly since I went to bed last night.... Mike, get an alt account and make a couple posts per day. You'll get a much better idea of how this community interacts, what's acceptable and what is mocked and why. If you want to work with the community you are going to need a thicker skin, you can't take stuff personally and you can't let it screw with you. Make that alt account and never mention your name or what you do while on that account, it will be a different experience that I think you'll learn a lot from.

You may not like me, or personally think I'm funny or a good host, but I have always been a genuine person.

That one hurt.
And I'm not ashamed or too "egomaniacal" to say so.

He should incorporate a 'Heckle Mike Rylander' section into the videos.

Not exactly a way to learn.  as with anything on the internet, you have to

1) accept that all of the people connecting everyday are only truly important to your life if you have them in your life outside of the internet.  Even then at the end of the day, it's your brain and heart not theirs.

2) develop some mental armor, and learn how to roll with the flow.  I'd say punches, but it's been years since anyone on fark has pissed me off.  I prefer swimming over fighting.

3) Take what makes sense to you as constructive criticism.  And run those and iffy ones by Drew to see if maybe you need improvement.

This is an attempt to increase entertainment after all.  Every writer, producer, etc learns from experience, mistakes, criticism, and advice.  Well, some do.  It's not one hundred percent.

I provide to you the apologies for the lateness of the responding but the WTFark office just finished the meeting. It has the agreement of mikerylander for providing to you the newest of the script writers which is the individual upon which has the bigger roommate. All which had the requirement was to show to this individual the supple breastings of me through the emailing file. In the future this will be quite the difference of thingings. You are welcome the Fark.com website.

Someone somewhere is going to read my posts and jump to a random conclusion.

Sorry, I'm not on staff in any capacity with fark. I haven't even been to a 3rd fark party yet, and I've been a non totalfark member for a few years now.  Before that I was one for 2.  before that I hadn't considered being one yet.
