I feel the same way and felt the same with Sagan's Cosmos too. I hope Carl gets a shout out tonight.

Flying Lasagna Monster: Just a friendly reminder that there was 4 Voyager probes planned, but Nixon cut the last two from the budget.

A further reminder that if the right wingers in the US govt - either the economic or religious conservative kind - got their way all the time, literally nothing that NASA has ever done would've happened.

WhyteRaven74: geom_00: Um....I for one would throw money at a kickstarter for that.

So would I.

cameroncrazy1984: That would be fun to have.

Yep it would.

It already exists, it just depends on how handy you are with a soldering iron:

The Society of Amateur Radio Astronomy website

http://radio-astronomy.org/e-store

has plans for an Itty Bitty Radio Telescope

http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/epo/teachers/ittybitty/procedure.html

that you can cobble together at home.  If you're completely inept at that kind of stuff, contact your local amateur radio club

http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club

and see if anyone can help.

Warning:  highly addictive hobby

mark12A: Sorry Neil, I consider Dark Matter to be Theology. "It's there, trust us. Can't see it, can't show you any, but it's there" Sorta like heaven, I guess.

Neil pointed out that the term "dark" matter or energy is a reference to our ignorance.

It must hurt to be that dumb. At least, dear God, I hope it does.

2014-06-08 09:40:38 PM
Dark matter is global warming of astrophysics, in that most astrophysicist are in agreement that dark matter is actually matter, but most lay people (who think about it at all) seem not to.

There are several lines of evidence showing dark matter being matter, rather than a breakdown of gravitational theory (e.g., MOND). The Bullet Cluster more or less puts the nails in the coffin of theories like MOND. Dark matter is far from "theology".

There is also precedent for a particle being theorized before its discovery. Neutrinos, for example, were theorized a good 30 years before being discovered in the lab. And there's also the Higgs Boson.
