Welcome to the "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" discussion thread and drinking game!

Episode 13: Unafraid Of The Dark
We know less now about the universe than educated Europeans did before the discovery of the Americas. All those billions of galaxies, all those stars, planets and moons--they amount to a meager 4 per cent of what really awaits out there. This awareness is the humility that distinguishes science from other human activities. It savors the fact that even bigger mysteries, mysteries like dark energy, await us.

Tonight's rules:

Neil says:

Billion(s) - big sip
Billions and billions - finish your drink
Dark/Darkness - sip
galaxy(ies) - sip

I've got too much grading to do to stick around, but it's been fun the threads I've been in for this. There's an image on the COSMOS twitter calling this the "season finale" so... here's to hoping!

I wish they would continue on and on. A really good science show. NDT is doing well. This will certainly be on my bluray list of "must-buy."

Have they got to the finale where God did it all yet?

This was one of the best series on TV in a while.  Here's hoping for some sort of sequel, like using Neuroscience as a launching pad to discuss biochemistry, genetics, informatics, and philosophy.

...you mean like NOVA ScienceNOW, that started almost a decade ago which Tyson hosted for five seasons?

No, not like that.

It's not been that good a series. Kinda light on the production values, and he jumped around a lot. Not a good narrative flow at all. The commercials were the final nail in the coffin. A noble effort, but something like this really belongs on PBS.

Last week was frustrating. Made some nice clear points about global warming, but didn't close the sale. You do NOT make a statement like "global warming is increasing the number and severity of storms" without backing it up with some data. There is no clear data showing that yet. We're coming off some quiet hurricane and tornado seasons. People are going to throw that in your face. He needed to make a complete airtight case, and didn't . And he was SO close. He talked about the carbon balance, good, killed the volcano argument the deniers use, but did NOT address how much CO2 the biosphere throws into the air. He needed to address that, because deniers will bring it up. Frustrating.

I haven't been here for the past few threads but I will definitely join in for the finale.

I disagree 100%. It's beautifully shot and well-edited. Tyson has a good way of explaining concepts and linking them together. You're just reaching for things to be critical about.

Wait, I'm sorry, was that too fanboish for you?

Sorry, that library looks totally fake. I know from the pixels.

Jenny McCarty and Ken Ham have sizable followings.

The Mobs already here, Neil

The mob's already here, Neil. What a virulent strain of anti-intellectualism we have in this country, to say nothing of the rest of the world.

No, sorry, I'm told that the Ship isn't pretty enough. Not enough production value on that ship.

Hm. That's an interesting perspective.

I should probably go out into the real world and spend time with real people.

I'm scared.

Just curious about ratings--is Cosmos considered a genuine ratings hit? Has it performed well enough that a 2nd season is likely?

It's done quite well in the ratings, but if there is a second season, Tyson won't be in it. He said the one season was enough given the time away from family and such it entailed.

It's not a question of performance, it's more that NdT has said that he doesn't want to do a second season.

Sadly, no.  Neil doesn't want to host a second season.

I am HOPING though, that someone else does.

Bill Nye, or another woman was suggested last week.
