Farkers, it's all psychological. You yell 9 foot shark, everybody says, "Huh? What?" You yell 16 foot shark, we've got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July.

they recorded it going 1,900 feet deep.  quick GIS says orcas have a maximum recorded dive depth of 750 feet.

Iggie: Does that mean they ruled out an Orca as the culprit?

Article says it stayed at 1,900 feet for days. Orcas have to surface every twenty minutes or so.

Well this has already been debunked as another great white eating it.

And 9 feet is pretty small for a great white anyway.

If by "solved" you mean "guessed at" then yes, it was solved. Except the only reason that's the "solution" is because they couldn't think up a better one.

I'd have guessed one of those elusive giant squids. Also, how does an "eaten" shark wash up on a beach? Doesn't sound very eaten to me.

I wouldn't have thought that the giant squids have an elevated body temp, but maybe they do, they're big enough I guess.  I would have guessed a sperm whale, but even those can't stay down for days at a time.

You mean like an orca? 23'-35' long, and up to six tons? And traveling in groups with merry ocean murder on their brains, which is about 4 times the size of our own?

Great whites are impressive bastiches, and in a lot of places in the ocean, they are the biggest and baddest. Up until whales and bigger sharks start rolling in and shooing them away from their young and feeding grounds, because they're stinking up the joint.

Saw this on Reddit a few days back. Since I lived hundreds of miles from the ocean, don't care if it's Krakens in San Diego. "Something ate a shark!OMG!!"

I assumed they meant the radio sensor tag washed up, not the ex-shark.

A 9 foot shark doesn't seem like it would have outgrown all the other predators out there, so I guess I wouldn't think this was all that unusual.

What I did find pretty cool was the diagnostic part of the article where they could see that it was attacked, eaten and track the predator's movement. That was pretty cool.
