Hey all,
Tonight is the final episode of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey so we wanted to do a little something extra to celebrate science, and the scientists who show us the awesome beauty of our universe. While we will still be posting the usual news stories and sports discussion threads throughout the day, we'll be sprinkling in extra links and threads about science stuff that captures our imagination. Some will be new, and some might be repeats or older articles that didn't get the attention they deserved the first time around. Feel free to join in and send us your favorites. We're kicking off Science Sunday with this link-- the classic Sagan piece guaranteed to make your room dusty.

I've seen this a dozen times. Make that a baker's dozen, now.

Carl Sagans Pale Blue Dot was the Tipping point for me to come out as an Atheist and quit saying I was a Christian. It holds a special place in my heart because of that. I remember exactly where I was 10 years ago when I first read it. Still makes me tear up when I watch it.

For some reason, it's always dusty when I see/hear this.

You are very important.  In your small corner of the universe.  Make that corner better before you move on.

I wish they'd tell me before they take these photos.

I always have something weird going on with my hair or some awkward expression going on. Is it really too much to ask for a little heads up?

Also, http://www.teefury.com/ is on the Cosmos bandwagon today as well.

In other news...I'll have to personally wait for my little celebration until this episode is available on Hulu.  Unless I can con someone to let me raid their house and turn the TV to FOX.... ;)

I've read the words before, yet never heard them spoken by Sagan himself.

Words cannot express my feelings. Only a tear can surmise my experience.

If NdGT plays the original Pale Blue Dot sequence from the original Cosmos at the end of tonight's episode, I'm going to completely lose my shiat and turn into a bawling little kid.

2014-06-08 02:29:54 PM
Well, I'm dumb.  I figgered I should check in Pale Blue Dot is from 1990, so wasn't in the original Cosmos.  Still, if he does anything with Pale Blue Dot tonight, I'm a gonner.

So anyone else remember the Palm Pilot GPS program that was suspiciously small in size and when you downloaded it, all you got was a large X on the screen saying "You are here."

Just me?

I needed this today, though I kind of need Sagan every day.

Thank you, Fark.

"The dumbing down of America is evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pesudo-science and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance. As I write, the number-one video rental in America is the movie Dumb and Dumber. "Beavis and Butthead" remain popular (and influential) with young TV viewers. The plain lesson is that study and learning not just of science, but of anything are avoidable, even undesirable."

Carl Sagan

"It is possible that we are rare, fleeting specks of awareness in an unfeeling cosmic desert, the only witnesses to its wonder. It is also possible that we are living in a universal sea of sentience, surrounded by ecstasy and strife that is open to our influence. Sensible beings that we are, both possibilities should worry us."

Timo Hannay

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."
