I am contacting my Congressional representatives to demand a ban on high-capacity toilet tanks and to demand creation of an agency overseeing toilet safety. Perhaps a Toilet Safety Administration.

It would have to be a gold brick that I dropped down the shiatter before I'd think about going in after it.

Even then I'd try thinking up another way to get it because I don't want my life to end at the bottom of a crap hole.

I'm not seeing the problem.  The point of the headline was obviously to juxtapose a situation where we expect numerous fatalities and casualties against a situation where we do not, but they happened anyway, in such a way as to expose the ridiculousness of the second situation. I thought it worked well.

Using a gun massacre instead of say...a train station bombing is just smart thinking, given that I can't think of any recent well publicized bombings.

Is groups of Asian folks who die going into a hole trifecta in effect?

There was a story on here a year or two ago of a guy hiding in porta potty or out house.  He tried to say he lost his ring so he went in after it but he was really hanging out in there waiting for women to do their business.

When I was in China, I saw some of the strangest inconsistencies in wealth -- between family members, and even for the same individual. The oddest one I saw was an old, decrepit house -- no electricity, no glass in the windows, crumbling roof -- with a brand spanking new Mercedes parked out front. My co-worker, far more knowledgeable than me, said that Chinese businessmen from the country don't own the homes they live in, so why bother upgrading it? That Mercedes was probably literally everything the guy had. Same with this lady -- every cent goes to personal property when you don't have to bother about where you live.

At least the phone was worth more then the seventy-five cents lost down the well.

That's an odd statement and doesn't make any sense.  Home ownership and property speculation is a national obsession there.

The idea of a businessman who doesn't own his own house or any real property would sound foolish to most folks there.

2014-06-08 05:02:58 AM
Reminds me of two old joke: A man fell in while using an out house and starts yelling "Fire Fire!" Another man runs in and startled to the man in the hole says "why were you yelling fire?" to which the man replied "No one would come if I was yelling shiat shiat!"
A guy walks into a two seat out house to find a man shoulder deep in one of the holes, "What are you doing?!" he asked, "Oh I dropped my jacket in there." the man replied. "Well do you really want the jacket now?" "No" said the man "But I had a sandwich in it's pocket."

*shrug* Like I said, I'm not particularly knowledgeable. I would guess that it has to do with residency. In China, you can't simply move where you like (legally), due to the hukou system. So if you're officially from a particularly poor area of the countryside, you can't just move to a nicer home.

Isn't it obvious? In order to stop these senseless and tragic deaths, we are going to have to ban holes.

Yes, that does sound quite plausible. They are indeed strict about population movement.

Don't forget divots and pockmarks. Clearly, schoolchildren digging holes in the sandbox should be suspended or expelled. ZERO TOLERANCE. Cowardice is a virtue!

You mean there wasn't a plan to keep putting "shooting" in the headlines to deliberately lure in all the pro-gun and anti-gun commenters, knowing full well they would be unable to resist typing their rants over and over again, and that as a result of this relentless incessant posting, they would eventually collapse and die from sheer exhaustion? Pity.

My only problem with the headline is that there's nothing remotely "new hotness" about it. Stories of people going into wells or toilet trenches for dropped valuables, and subsequently dying from the methane or other gases, are old as dirt. Fark posts at least one a season.

There are more cell phones in India then there are people with access to toilets, a significant fraction have a phone and an outhouse or hole in the ground...

In fairness, the first one went in after the $0.75, but the rest were probably going in to save the others,

Though you'd think that after the 2nd or 3rd, they'd see the flaw in that plan.

A friend of mine getting ready for a trip to Japan was working through a conversational Japanese book.    One of the sentences in the second chapter was:

Grandma has fallen into the cesspool, again.

Now there are a few times I may have used that line had it not been for the "again" at the end.
