Jeeves wasn't a butler, he was a valet (pronounced "val-ett"; the "t" isn't silent).

Again, I've read way too much Wodehouse.

He behaver with the duties of a butler and if he was here he would have pointed out for me that I misspelled behaved. Thus adverting another war. Checkmate Herr Gunther

Oldiron_79: Boo_Guy: 1)  having a butler would be odd,  ordering around some stranger in my home would be awkward.
2) if I did have a butler I would want one that stays put for life so it wouldn't be weird,  like an Alfred type dealie.
Having a butler would be too near to having a slave for my liking.

Not only would I not be able to boss someone around like that (I like doing all that stuff that servants do), I wouldn't want someone knowing my personal life like that. I like my home because I have privacy there. Why would I want someone knowing all my secrets/personal stuff, and someone who probably resents me on some level too?

I notice the increase in demand is for butlers but not lady's maids. Personally, I would love to have someone take care of all my clothes and laundry every day. Not just do the laundry, but sew on buttons, mend hems, see that everything fits me perfectly and also manage my wardrobe and fashion choices. That and do my hair on the daily.

That would be pretty effing cool. I'd be lazy as hell, but it's an it's an interesting daydream to have.

Gunther: aerojockey: What do butlers even do?  It's not like they have a specific job like cooks and porters and stuff.

They're the head of the household staff - they order around the cooks and grooms and housemaids and so on. They're often confused with valets, who are a gentleman's personal servant in the same way that a lady's maid is a lady's personal servant. In the 20th century as the wealthy began to employ fewer servants the two jobs combined to some extent.

I don't think there's much to be gained by reading his war broadcasts from Germany, as... well, they're embarrassing and I think it's generally agreed that he wasn't in his right mind at the end of his life.

For some reason this reminds me of the episode of Monk where he went undercover as a Butler and didn't want to come out.

It was like the perfect job for him.

If "Downton Abbey" has resulted in an increase in demand for butlers, does this mean that when the
show goes off the air, there will be thousands of unemployed butlers? (Just as every time "101 Dalmatians"
is rereleased, there's an upsurge in demand for Dalmatian puppies....but when people find they can't take
care of them, since Dalmatians require extra attention, there's a similar upsurge in arrivals of young adult
Dalmatians at animal shelters.)

Butlers only make sense where there is an aristocracy of birth and the titled head of a house has a caretaker relationship to the house and estate. If the big house is just a marker of wealth then having non-family members resident in your house with you seems to be asking for trouble.

Nope. One of them is an actor or something. The other has pretty significant power in the real world, and you should really know who the fark he is. Both are wearing black tie, and they do look startlingly similar.
