Is littering not a social taboo in China? There were hundreds of garbage cans set all around. Even if they were filled to the brim, protocol says you still don't drop your trash on the ground anywhere you please, you put it next to the trash cans. Or start a garbage hill on top of the garbage can.

People that litter should be tortured for weeks then killed.

I went hiking in the Cascades last week.  Lots of dogs on the trail.  On the way down I saw at least 4 plastic bags full of dog crap left right on the trail.  Those people should be tortured forever and not allowed to die.  How nice of them to bag the dog crap, then leave it for all to see.  WTF?

That's 15oz of litter per person there.  Your average NASCAR fan probably generates that much trash in one trip to concessions and costs a hell of a lot more to clean up after.

But the difference is that NASCAR fan isn't just dumping his trash anywhere he pleases. He's dumping it in the garbage can because littering is frowned upon in this society. If he dumps it on the floor in front of a crowd, you can bet easy money someone in the crowd is going to yell at him to pick it up and put it where it belongs. China doesn't seem to have the same social taboo.

363 tons over 780,000 people... that's about a pound of trash per person.  Are they including the trash made by all the vendors as well, because even for china, it seems hard imagine a pound of trash per person tossed on the ground for a 1-day festival.  Empty food containers, paper bags, and plastic bottles don't weigh all the much (~1/2 ounce for an empty water bottle).

Well, when I'm walking around my neighborhood, my dog usually takes a crap about 100' down the road. I pick it up with a bag.
The dog needs a longer walk than that, and I don't want to carry her stinky poop with me for a mile and a half. So I leave the bag on the other side of the road to pick up on my way back, so I only have to carry stinky dog poop 100' instead of 8000 feet or so.

I have no idea if that's what those hikers were planning or not, but it's feasible. Dog poop bags are ultra lightweight and let the stink out. You would need to bring a ziplock bag (and to a national/state park, you ought to) to keep the poop stench contained.

Walking around my lightly traffic'd semi-rural neighborhood is a bit different from shared trails, but it's possible those dog loving hikers were just being dicks, instead of major assholes.

I once watched a family at a picnic ground leave all their trash, including used diapers, on & around the table, there was a trash can 20 feet away. I seen campsites just covered with trash including broken bottles.
Back when I smoked cigarettes I wouldn't even leave a butt on the ground at a campsite, if I wasn't close to a trash can then I field-stripped it & it went into my pocket to be tossed later.

I HATE people who litter, goddam no-class slimeballs.

P NW dog owners are why I hate hiking in the PNW. All kinds of lovely, beautiful places to go, but so often ruined by some idiot and his off-leash dog. fark you even see it 3 miles up the farking Carbon Glacier trail in the gotdamn National park. Yea I don't get it.  I was taught to leave a place cleaner than you found it by picking up at least some of the trash others may have left.  At the very least, do it so you can feel morally superior to others.  But seriously, if everyone did this the world would be a nicer place.

Me & the wife have cleaned up campsites more than we care to remember, we carry extra trash bags just for that. The worst time was when we came across a campfire some asshats had left burning, 10 yards from a stream!!! (southwest high desert, where everything burns), if we'd been able to report them to the cops we would have, but we never saw them.

They're on an out and back and anticipate picking it up on their way back rather than carrying it the whole distance.  It's SOP around here, although if my dogs want to go they do usually it so damn close to the trailhead I don't see any reason to be lazy and not just backtrack to the trashcan.

I do see and pick up some distinctly weathered looking ones occasionally -- I think it's too easy to forget exactly where you left the bag and/or not be able to find it so easily coming the other direction, so I stopped trusting myself to remember.  But it's also easy for a fellow dog owner to just pick up two instead of one, so it does seem to work out eventually  At least, when I started going out before sunrise I realized at one point that I very very rarely saw any stragglers from the day before.  There's just the short term ugliness of dog poo bags marring the landscape.

My father and I had the pleasure of reporting an asshole in Yellowstone park.  He was in the camp site next to ours, and spent an hour pouring lighter fluid on a log much too large for the fire pit (as well as obviously too large to get a fire started).  Once he'd gotten it lit real good, he and the wife IMMEDIATELY drove off in the RV, leaving the log burning.  Dad and I went into their camp and busted the log so it fit into the fire pit.  The next day, as we were leaving, we mentioned something to the first ranger we saw.  Saw Mr. Charcoal Lighter Fluid in town that night, and I like to think he was tossed out on his miserable farking ass.

And they probably do but the difference here is that Americans throw their trash out in designated areas be it trash cans or garbage dumps. They don't throw away things anywhere they please like it seems to be the case here. If individual Americans do, American society scolds them being with social shunning "Hey, pig, don't throw that on the floor. Throw it away in the trash. Were you raised in a barn?" or government enforced littering fines. And this has nothing to do with race but rather with society norms and taboos. It is frowned upon in the US to litter. You know a Chinese American is just as clean as his or her fellow citizen when it comes to throwing away their trash in a trash can. The question is does China have a social taboo on littering? Is this beach proof that they don't?
