trevzie: Imagine if bystanders had concealed carries instead of pepper spray. It's a rare person who will take pepper spray to a gun fight. It worked out in this case, thankfully.

However, takedowns like this would be more common if people had the tools to do it.

Imagine if every single person had a gun aimed at everyone else all the time. It's right there in the constitution.

trevzie: UsikFark: trevzie: UsikFark: trevzie: You really have to reach to come up with a scenario where it's better that the bystanders don't have guns.

Tell us more. Please.

I will when someone more capable of defending their argument arises

Your argument sucks. People with guns that want to shoot someone will find crowds and bystanders. They will enter classrooms with people hiding under desks. In a college, a movie theater, or a shopping mall, bystanders are crouched behind walls hiding. This shooting happened in a college lobby next to classrooms during a school day.
This shooting was solved quickly without another gunman. Pray tell how ten armed bystanders shooting this guy would have been better.

The point is that all those people hiding under desks don't have concealed carries and that is why shootings often have so many casualties before the cops can show up. If there were 10 concealed carries this shooting would have ended how it did, early.

Just because this one happened to end with mace doesn't mean it is a likely resolution.

Number of mass shootings stopped with mace: 1

Number of mass shootings stopped with guns or threat of guns: every single other one

Number of mass shootings stopped by gun nuts with assault weapons strapped to their back while they're eating a burrito?

Thanks to zero tolerance, it will never happen. Gun free zones? Also bow free zones. For the children, you see.

/You can watch pro wrestling if you want to see people get hit in the head with a chair.
//If you want your gun free zones, and onerous legislation on legal gun owners, you should have to wait for the cops to come save your ass, since you have abdicated your ability to defend yourself to the police.

So, you're just going to repeatedly stamp your feet and cry "MOAR GUNS MOAR GUNS MOAR GUNS!" like some kind of fool? Adorable.

Secret Master of All Flatulence: mekki: Between this and the deputy at the courthouse, I see this as a tipping point. People are going to start fighting back using any means they can get.

Um, hate to point this out, but it's not a new thing.  In fact, several shootings have been stopped by people going to their vehicles and retrieving their personal sidearms, and then using them to take down the shooter.  Some involved staff, some involved, (oh, how terrible!) STUDENTS who had guns legally in their vehicles.

not only are school shootings not a new thing, they are generally decreasing in frequency.

/no matter how many times news people tell you school shootings are new, an american thing, or that columbine or sandy hook were the largest school massacres, just think that sandy hook was only in third place and columbine fifth. in the united states. the biggest here was in 1927. go worldwide and only one of those two american shootings even makes the top ten list.

//but, i am sure someone on fark will argue that they only happen here, now, and we need to ban something because of it.

Hmm....sorry for what you did? I'm thinking you're sorry you didn't kill more before someone owned your punk coward ass. And please, ask the guards not to watch you too closely on the "suicide watch", do the world a favor and exit it now.

/Thanks, the World.

I'm usually of the opinion that a suicide watch should do just that.

Watch.  Note the absence of the words "prevent" or "interfere".

So that it can be precisely recorded what time the person of interest saved the State the expense and media circus of a high profile trial.

Pokey.Clyde: dookdookdook: In other news, who the hell gets married when they're 22? (or ever, for that matter?)

Plenty of people do, numbnuts. Just because nobody will touch your "special area", doesn't mean everyone else has that same problem.

I was mainly referring to people who don't subscribe to a repressive religious dogma that severely restricts their sexual freedom until they've entered into a life-altering legal contract and paid out the asshole for a giant, lavish ceremony with all their friends and family.

On the other hand, if you're a desperately horny 18-22 year old who simply isn't permitted to have any "special area" contact until you've blown $25,000 just to parade your Special Friend out in front of everyone you've ever known and entered into a legal contract that (depending on the state, etc.) could easily result in you losing half your shiat if you ever stuck your dick in *anyone* else, I can half understand how you could be driven to such foolish decisions.

It was the "of course" after the slashee thingee, as if divorce is an assured post-wedding event.
But it sounds like you're at-peace.  Peace.

it was more intended as an afterthought/aside.

The whole marriage-divorce or your slashee-comment were afterthoughts?

That's an interesting getup that they've got Ybarra in.  I thought disposable Tyvek construction overalls were all the rage this year for prison transport, but looks like this guy got the deluxe "we can't trust you to put your own pants on, so we're going to wrap you in a velcro-laced carpet pad and call it good" treatment

(also, who was the editor who felt the need to repeat their ages every time their names were mentioned?)

I would venture that that's the kind of thing that takes huge balls and a certain amount of recklessness/disregard for consequences.

Which is weird, because that seems so very out of character for what we know about this guy from TFA.  Puzzling indeed.

Between this and the deputy at the courthouse, I see this as a tipping point. People are going to start fighting back using any means they can get. I would not be surprised that the next spree killer was taken down by someone using a baseball bat or a hockey stick. People have gone from being fearful of spree killers to tired of them and now they are angry. And, yes, I know the deputy was doing his job but he could have waited for back-up. Instead, he went, "Screw it. You are not getting in."
