What are the odds of Chrome being killed on the track?

The odds on Chrome are so skewed it seems like a sucker bet.

I'd almost rather put $10 each on a few of the others.

Lost Thought 00: What are the odds of Chrome being killed on the track?

Horse racing - the Deadliest Sport

Apparently it's very rare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racehorse_injuries

According to tables in that article there might be an expected 2 or 3 fatal injuries on the track for every 1000 starts.

So with 11 starting for the Stakes, that's like 1 in 300 or 400 odds of any of them going down.

Congratulations for the NYR for not only winning the EC, but having a lower-seeded team, so that they could host a SCF game tonight.

Otherwise, bonus hockey would have been bumped by pre-race horse show.

I get your point, but I wouldn't go so far as to call a 0.3% fatality rate for participants very rare. Rarer than popular belief, perhaps.

I want to see Chrome win, it is time for a triple crown.

Would it be too much to ask for NBC to actually cover horse racing like a sport? Maybe tell us something about the horses running? God forbid, let us actually SEE the horses-like maybe in the post parade? Nah, forget it. I'd much rather hear what every celebrity on the planet thinks.  And I wait for those cute animations of what might happen.

Ironically Barbaro was the one horse in recent memory that I felt really could win the triple crown and he died. I'm rooting for Chrome because my friend is there with his dad and it would really make them both happy.

I don't think a SCF game has been played in the afternoon in decades, so it wasn't an issue.

Of course it's nothing but fluff and filler. The coverage is 2 hours, 45 minutes for a two-minute horse race. How many early races are they showing? 4? 6? 8? So that takes care of, what, 20 minutes, tops? That leaves them with nearly 2-and-a-half hours of dead air. Figure an hour for commercials, that still leaves 90 minutes to fill.

So they fill it with mind-numbingly boring and vapid fluff pieces that would only appeal to drooling lobotomy patients because, let's face it, NBS sports execs are a bunch of drooling lobotomy patients. It's horse racing. What else can they do?

It's not like they can interview the horses.

I'm excited. But then again I was excited the other 11 (I think) times a horse won the first 2 in the last 36 (I think) years.

Last chance for General A-Rod to fulfill my hope for this season. Both in the Derby and Preakness, I was hoping General A-Rod would win, but then a week later test positive for horse steroids. Come on, this is the perfect buildup. This is his last shot. 35-1, General A-Rod wins it, ruins the triple crown, and we find out he cheated within two weeks.

I would think so.  The stud fees for a Triple Crown winner would be enormous;  no sense in risking that with more racing.
