LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. -

Summertime in Missouri, when the little ones all go off to meth camp. Treasure these days, because pretty soon they'll be cooking their own in the hutch behind the trailer.

But what if a giant radiation eating bug attacks San Francisco?

/Why then he wouldn't be stuck in a schoolbus on the Golden Gate Bridge while Godzilla and the bug duke it out right on top of him.

Probably.  But, at best she would probably get a boundary exemption (allows them to attend a different school in the area) and force them to "review" the process of communication, plus an undisclosed sum of go-away money.

When I was 4, I did math for fun, in addition to the usual kid stuff.  I figured out the equation for car tire diameters from first principles and would go through the Sears catalog's tire section and calculate all the specs on everything.  It was the COOLEST THING, I could take the numbers they gave me and multiply this and add that and come up with NEW NUMBERS THAT MEANT SOMETHING.

When I was a little kid I excelled at math and athletics.  I had no interest in, nor was I even decent at anything related to arts and crafts.  My parents saw this and encouraged my abilities.  If there had been a math camp available when I was a kid my parents would have happily sent me there, and I'd have enjoyed that a lot more than the church camp singing praises to an imaginary sky-buddy bullshiat I experienced.

A similar situation happened to me when I was in middle school. I stayed after for some event, got on the bus they told me would take me home and ended up dropped off at a Kroger store miles from my house. This happened to like three kids on the same day including me. I ended up borrowing someone's cell phone and calling my Mom to come get me. Apparently by that time the Amber Alerts were already out for all three of us and the search was on. Needless to say the district got some egg on its face and changed a bunch of rules and policies.

Smith says she originally signed Hayden up for bus service, but told a teacher and the school office on the first day of summer school that her son was going to be picked up every day. She says the mistake is inexcusable.

To be fair, putting the kid on the bus because you filed the wrong paperwork and only told random unrelated people about the correction orally is actually pretty excusable.

It's not like the kid ever got to wander off unsupervised, they got to the end of the route (at the next school on the list) and then realized that the kid hadn't gotten off (not being on the roster, which is how you determine who gets off where with kindergarten kids... you don't trust them to remember their own stops) and called it in.

Honestly the parent didn't even come up with a good lie for outrage-production here... because even according to the mother's story, it's both a non-issue and pretty much entirely her fault.  Informing the school in a timely fashion instead of just offhandedly telling someone in the office  after summer school already started is pretty much on the parent.  People taking the kid to the buses aren't  supposed to take the kid's word for it that something has changed, because  it's a farking four-year-old for whom they're responsible.  Just letting him go off with a random woman they'd never met when he was on the bus list wouldn't just be irresponsible, it'd be  blatantly illegal.  That's how kidnapping stories generally start - random non-custodial relative shows up, dumbass kid goes with them not realizing anything is wrong.

// I would comment on how you must be literally, clinically mentally retarded to need to send a kid to "camp" for  kindergarten level math instead of just teaching him at home, but I think the fact she named him "Hayden" makes that argument more eloquently than I ever could.

Oh, summer belongs in there, as does the word school. Not sure camp does, but it may be more about preserving feelings.

At least, that's what it was called when I was little and you needed a little "extra help" during the offseason. Because you were bad at math.

Hey now, we can't have logical thought processes from someone who actually read the article and properly concluded the fault lay with the mother. This is not how social media works these days. We must be OUTRAGED and demand JUSTICE for our poor little children.

The only thing I remember about being 4 was wanting a Big Wheel for my 5th birthday. I'm really not sure how I even knew that Big Wheels existed. I must have seen one somewhere, or seen a commercial, or something.. but damned if I can remember.

I dont get why this news. School made a small mistake, which was easily resolved. The kid was never lost, never without supervision, and never in danger. complete non-story.

2014-06-07 10:50:04 AM
Why didn't the kid just jump out of the back of the bus ?

CSB: When I was in elementary school I took the bus. One day i got off the bus but just as I stepped off I remembered I left a ball on my seat. I asked the bus driver if I could go and get it. He said yes. I got back on the bus and he immediately closed the door and proceeded to drive away. Once stopped in traffic I jumped out as he refused to let me out.

I think I might have gotten in trouble for it but it was better than getting taken 1/2 way across town.

Exactly. The kid is four. Changes in transportation plans must be in writing for children that young. It's a school liability thing.

Maybe I should contact the local news every time my five-year-old misses the bus because he is too busy playing swords in the bathroom.

On top of that, since I'm sure the school didn't, she apparently also went to the media about this and told them her name and how stupid she is.  For some reason... Can't see why besides looking for a pay day.

Hayden, and math camp at four years old. How about you take care of your own farking kid for the summer, mom? He's probably been in daycare since he was two days old, since his parents can't even get organized enough to decide if he's supposed to be put on the bus or not when he's only four.

It takes two to Tango. The media picks up on a non-story and runs with it. It is not like Houston has murders, corruption, gang problems, etc. to report.

I have a friend who has a literal 'baby face', and appears much younger than he really is.

Once we wear nearby to a school and one of the yard monitors thought he was a student, and started physically manhandling him over to the other students. No amount of reason: showing of driver's licenses, impossibility of being where he was if he was a student, lack of recognition "have you EVER seen me before?", would convince this bitz that this was impossible; Everything being told to her was a lie and fake and it was her job to return this 'student' to the school, who was obviously trying to escape.

We went looking for him and found him still arguing with her amongst a whole bunch of other students with a marching band or something, all trying to tell the hall monitor that he wasn't one of theirs. It took three of us adults, all saying the same thing, before she would even consider the idea; showing OUR driver's licenses, and threatening to call the police to finally manage to having him "picked up by an adult".

The sheer ignorance of some people utterly unpersuaded by reality is breathtaking.

When the school ran out of stories of what happened to the child and the bus, the child was released, and the district gave itself a raise.
