On the other hand, his business is selling those infuriatingly obnoxious incredibly loud horns for trucks that make them sound like locomotives.  Given that, I'm not exactly upset that the police trashed it.

wax_on: Jeez, how many police abuses would we eliminate if we just made pot legal? No more "I smelled pot so I decided it was my duty to violate the 4th amendment."

Dont worry. We'll find something. The appearance that there are human trafficing victims in the trunk or something. Perhaps the popo will suddenly discover that extacy has a pungent odor. They arent going to let that sweet overtime vanish without a fight.

granolasteak: I have no idea how this can possibly be legal.

It's not.

How can that PD possibly justify destroying personal property (as well as a man's business) without a warrant?

They can't

I thought they had to get permission to enter a domicile, why not a vehicle?  And what gave them the right to pull out wires and disable his equipment???

Because fark YOU, that's why.

It's ridiculous how far things have gotten out of hand since 9/11. Seriously pathetic. I have children and I hope we can start to swing this place back to some level of sanity soon. When I drop my kids off to fly to their mothers and I see 30 mouth breathing dolts who would be working at Walmart otherwise manning the security checkpoint, frisking old ladies, I cry.

End the war on drugs and end 3/4 of the problems people are arrested for.  Make prostitution safe and legal and end the other 1/4.   The straggly idiots who stilll commit crimes after that are worth shooting, anyway.

Where are the teabaggers and Real Americans™? They're always screaming about the evil, over-reaching government taking all of their rights and property away.  These kinds of stories come out daily; you'd think they'd be all-hands-on-deck with this issue.

TuteTibiImperes: TommyymmoT: First, it was not a pickup.

Second, they didn't just trash a truck, they trashed his business because he uses it as a mobile platform to demonstrate the variety of air horns he sells for a living, and they trashed his demos.

It does seem to be a pickup.   Here's his website.  It looks to be a Ford F-650 or F-750 medium duty truck with an aftermarket pickup conversion (they don't sell them that way from the factory).

Now, on one hand, this seems to be an example of abuse of police power.

But seriously they do this crap a lot. I know a few people who have had their cars towed, impounded and search because it was suspicious. They ended up having to pay impound fees to get their cars back to find them stripped of stereo equipment and any of value they had in it stolen.

This kind of thing not only infuriates me, it really stuns me.  I don't have a reality setting where the police are the bad guys.

My husband, as a Chief in the FD, has stricter rules on his conduct than it seems many LEOs in other states do.  It's just shocking.  People should be able to trust, without question, those who commit to protect and serve.  And this sort of theft should be not just actionable, but a demanded actionable offense.  No way to get out of it, no excuses.

Most of us expect that when we call 911, the people who show up will be compassionate, competent, honest, sober, and hardworking.  Any deviation from that is just ...appalling.  Absolutely appalling.

How do I reach this shangrila where the police are properly restrained and always worthy or trust? I wish to relocated family there.

Yeah?  I have a friend who is a cop.  He sometimes tells us amusing stories about how stupid/ borderline incompetent his coworkers are.  Do you remember that IQ test some departments have cops take so they won't hire anyone too smart?  I think my friend might not pass it on the high side.  Not so sure about some of his coworkers.

I'm talking stupid like texting and Facebooking while driving.  Like 16 year old driver stupid.

And it's frightening to think that people like those responding here, average joes so to speak, are raising their children to fear and hate law enforcement.  It's frightening that it even seems reasonable to fear law enforcement in any shape.

My local police are generally fantastic as well. They're also not pulling no-knock raids for non-violent offenses, and they're not using 'civil forfeiture' to steal everything they can. All my interactions with them have been professional (though I admit it can only help to be a clean-cut white guy driving cars in decent repair.)

You just don't know how the cops in your town are crooked.

The problem is that it's a self-feeding spiral. A lot of cops treat the public as the enemy. This causes parents to teach children to stay away from the scary man with the badge. This causes cops to be surrounded by unspoken hostility. Et cetera.

Sadly, there isn't anything that the public can do about it, other than set up limits to abuse of color of law.

This sort of behavior is not abnormal.

Was at a highway rest stop the other day. Was towing, so I dropped the truck and trailer in the truck parking area.

There was a car carrier there, surrounded by ten or so unmarked police vehicles, among them a large number of SUVs. The first obviously strange thing was that, trailing from the doors on the SUV's, were a bunch of Dewalt power tool battery chargers.

They had all the brand new, fresh-off-the-boat cars pulled off the truck and were systematically dismantling them right there in the rest stop parking lot. Did not photograph, because my own setup looked far from legit - big Dodge farm truck with "PRIVATE TRANSPORT NOT FOR HIRE" decals, a flatbed trailer, and a fully dismantled Corvette strapped on, with all its guts piled up in the back of the truck.

I am not at all upset the cops trashed his ride, I mean the Cops targeted the right kind of asshole to be vandalized. I've heard these train horn go off, some asshole in Lakeland has one and goes around the Mall parking lot and outdoor diners to blast his little horn.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone founds out who it is, and the guy gets beaten to an inch of his life - it would be sweet justice. Problem is they are not entirely main stream enough to be banned, however some of these assholes have them and its a serious problem.

I am deaf and it sounded like it was a freight train 15 feet from me, if my ears cringe I can bet other people would be none so pleased to have these horns go off. Either way good job to the officer, hopefully the jackass grows up.

Not likely in Florida, we have something called "probable cause", the officer suspected the truck had a stash of weed, if he swears this statement in court, the court could either approve or reject this (most of the time charges dropped). In this case if the guy wants he can go after the police officer, which would put every cop against him in Florida, pulling him over for speeding when he's going 1mph over etc.

Word of advice to him, remove the horns and quietly get his truck repaired because he makes it worse for himself.

I heard that the major cocaine traffickers used to take cocaine and cannabis and blend it up into a fine liquid and then spray it on everything getting shipped out of Columbia but the product. There used to be a guy at the shipping yard who walked around with his sprayer hitting every container. They also used to spray their money so that it got into circulation, the idea being that the cops would be so busy with false alarms that they could just slip past. Also, I know a guy that used to train police dogs and he said that most dogs are trained crookedly by their handlers and they can make them react anytime they want to even if the dog did not find anything.

I have really sensitive ears and I jump at loud noises. No, I'm not just being a whiny biatch--I have to put my hands over my ears if one of those loud choppers go by, or an unmuffled truck. They completely unnerve me if I'm driving and one is too close. If somebody blew off one of those air horns near me, my ears would cringe so hard I might drive off the road. Seriously.   It very likely is. My town also has a very professional and effective police force, but even our officers have mentioned that the cops in a neighboring area even scare THEM, personally. Apparently, the exact kind of applicants our force rejects due to psych screens showing a predilection toward violence and power issues are exactly the applicants that city hires. One force has an attitude of policing, and the other almost an attitude of a military occupation force. Different institutional cultures entirely. Its like a group of goddamn mall ninjas with uniforms and guns, and openly hurt and/or kill people who cross them. Openly, on camera, and still always get cleared for it. Eventually the feds may step in the way they have had in other places, but that takes a loooooong time and a lot of bodies.
Not all departments are created equal. You got lucky. Don't think its typical.

This is what happens when guys who are worried about their penis size find each other.  Here is the summary I would like to see in the paper:

Some young guy is worried about his penis size and sells loud, obnoxious horns to other young guys worried about their penis size.  The cops, who are butt hurt about not having the legal tools to bust mr horn guy, and who are worried about their own penis size as a result, decide to become vigilantes and screw with mr horn guy's truck to teach him a lesson.

As someone above said, nuke em all from space.

Yeah--that's what lawyer-types call a "warrant."  What court did the cop go to before tearing apart this guy's car?
