2 foot shark or not, I'd have hated to have a spam-can size chunk of butt removed. It was pretty cool of the guy to have reacted as quickly as he did. Still, "Hero"? I dunno
As for why there are so few sharks around, it's because we're eating them all! Shark fin soup, shark steak, tooth pendants, sharkskin abrasives, by-catch (meaning it wasn't what you wanted to catch this time so you kill it and throw it back)...etc. etc...The suckers reproduce a LOT slower than scaled fish so they just aren't gonna grow back as fast as squid or bluefish....and nobody knows what the fark that's gonna do to the underwater ecosystem. I personally hope that it means a massive increase in man-eating squid, myself.
