Since Catholics counts as Christians, so does Mormons.

Tom_Slick: Only 3% of the population that declares themselves as religious, describe themselves as non-Christian. So prison surely adds to the members of Islam in this state.

Yeah, it's not nothing, but "prison conversions" are only moderately common.

pearls before swine: Alaska is almost 20% Native American.  Hawaii is 10% Native Hawaiian.  I'm to believe there are more actual Buddhists in those states than adherents of native religious tradition?  I guess that might be true.

Christianity spread pretty effectively among Native Americans throughout the Americas.  I don't know about Hawaii and Alaska, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same were true there.

I grew up in DuPage county, the red one in the Chicago suburbs. I'd be interested in seeing a map like that over time, because from what I remember, my town had a wave of Pakistani immigrants come in right around the time I hit middle school.

/And there was tension, since that's not the only way DuPage is red.

And yet Murfreesboro, Tennessee is the town with all the controversy about an Islamic Mosque being built. I blame those Jews.

A lot of them are snowbirds from NY/NJ. Depending on what time of year the survey was done, or what state they claim residence in, that could effect things.

I'm just speculating that "prison conversions" may be the tipping point for Islam to overtake Judaism, since both religions make up less than 3% of the population.  that 3% also includes all other religions.

The relevant comments and concerns have already been logged. Time to close the thread. In summary, Florida has more Muslims than Jews? Plus, the South has lots of black people, what with that whole slave issue a few years back and all -- and by the way, sorry for that, black people -- and it's no small secret that Islam is quite popular amongst black folks. Oh, then there's South Carolina and Tennessee, places that Muslims are smart enough to avoid.

I'd like to know how the fark Hamilton County, N.Y. is >5% Muslim.  There are no state prisons there to skew the numbers.

Granted, the whole county has less than 5,000 residents, so a few Muslim families moving to one of the little towns up there could conceivably throw the numbers off.

Heh. At first I was surprised that Hamilton County, NY was 5.0% Muslim or more. That's out in the middle of nowhere.

But then I crunched the numbers: 5% of that county's population comes out to only 241 people.

Grandparents have lived there for like 50ish years. I un-ironically love the town, but it has changed for the worse since I was a kid. They are doing their best to strangle the life out of the downtown area, and don't seem to have any interest in attracting people to the town. I will never get over the fact they turned to the Dupage into a parking lot. =(

Why is it weird?

For the same reason moving to NY and discovering an unusually large number of Sikh converts would be weird. Not that it's a bad thing, as religions go, just that it's got a very Eastern "flavor" and it's farking strange to have a bunch of white people earnestly discussing existential philosophy through a cultural lens that isn't their own.

I mean, maybe for you it's normal but I am still adjusting.

Speaking of adjusting, how do Californians not know how to fry chicken? When you can make chicken & waffles taste bad you might as well move to England because good food is just not your forte.

Maybe they did; the map doesn't tell us what the most popular religion in each state is.  But yeah, I would have expected Christianity to come in second in Utah, not Buddhism.  And how did Mormonism not manage to be the second most popular religion in at least one of the surrounding states?
