I know nothing about the source data, but I question its accuracy (besides it being 4+ years old)

Minnesota, for example, has a LOT of Asian immigrants, who, depending on who asked them, would say they are Christian or Buddhist / Traditional.

There are certainly many times more Hmong than there are Jews up here.

It's almost like they have some kind of common ground.

2014-06-06 04:43:09 PM
Well that's probably where they get the idea that sekrit mooslems are taking over the place.

South Carolina is getting a little Bahai in their work.

/Love that joke.

I expect the second-most common religion in the south to be Roman Catholicism.

Alright, followers of the Donkey Goddess Brayhm.  We need to stand up and make our presence known.  Grab your Sacred Burritos of Loslobova and meet in our traditional place of worship (the bathrooms at the local laundromats)

Brayhmonites UNITE!!

Mormons couldn't even carry their own state?  For shame!  Wasn't really expecting Scientology to carry FL either.

2014-06-06 04:48:44 PM
not surprising being that muslim is the fastest growing religion in the world, and quite possibly the most popular.

2014-06-06 04:48:55 PM
lots of black muslims. Nation of Islam, etc.

I grew up in DuPage county, the red one in the Chicago suburbs. I'd be interested in seeing a map like that over time, because from what I remember, my town had a wave of Pakistani immigrants come in right around the time I hit middle school.

/And there was tension, since that's not the only way DuPage is red.
//The building that was my elementary school is now an Islamic K-12. Hoo-boy, were there some angry editorials in the local newspaper when that happened.

No, no I don't think so- all Asian folks make up a grand total of 4% of the population of Minnesota. Just on population percentage, there would be more people who were Jewish.

You figure it's because the Jews are a wee bit reluctant to register that information with the state, maybe?

Kind of surprised Georgia is Islam rather than Jewish.  Of course my friend who works in the Georgia state prison system says the most of the white and black inmates convert to Islam to protect themselves from the white supremacist and Hispanic gangs.

Prisoners and ex-prisoners only make up 5-10% of our population.

Was talking to a friend about another friend of ours (who's a religious studies PhD - candidate at the time), and I mentioned something about him being Christian and my bud responded

"He's not Christian, he's Catholic"

That was the first I ever heard of that distinction - I'm southern, my commenting friend is from Indiana, so I assumed it was a mid Western thing.

/it wasn't said pejoratively; they're best buds

Only 3% of the population that declares themselves as religious, describe themselves as non-Christian. So prison surely adds to the members of Islam in this state.

It would have been nice to link to the recent Washington Post article that shows this map and others, that everybody is discussing.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2014/06/04/the-second -l argest-religion-in-each-state/
The second-largest religion in each state

Several people question the accuracy of its data, eg:
http://marksilk.religionnews.com/2014/06/06/map-wrong/
This map is wrong

The only trouble is that none of the above is true.
How do I know this? The map comes from the 2010 U.S. Religious Census taken by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies. The Religious Census is based on self-reporting by religious bodies, a means of data collection that, depending on the body, ranges from highly accurate to wildly conjectural and self-serving. It is, in the aggregate, far less accurate than large random phone surveys that ask individuals to give their religious identity.
Thus, in 2008, Pew's Religious Landscape Study showed more than twice as many Jews as "Other World Religions" (Sikhs, Jains, and others as well as Baha'is) in South Carolina. It showed more than four times as many Jews as Hindus in Delaware, and more than twice as many Jews and twice as many Buddhists as Hindus in Arizona. It showed over six times as many Jews as Muslims in Florida and over four times as many in Illinois.
...
By far the largest non-Christian group in American society is composed of those who disclaim any religious identity. These self-identified Nones now represent roughly 20 percent of the adult population.

wait for the blacks to realize that in arabic (islam) they are called slaves and not regarded as equals.

2014-06-06 05:16:00 PM
Alaska is almost 20% Native American.  Hawaii is 10% Native Hawaiian.  I'm to believe there are more actual Buddhists in those states than adherents of native religious tradition?  I guess that might be true.

Rather than percentage, I think a more relevant way to display the data would be raw numbers.  I think that would provide a more honest portrayal.

The numbers are far less significant than the title suggests.
