Seems kinda weird to change a painting like that. Removing the whale makes it just seem like a bunch of schmos hanging out on the beach.

People are weird when it comes to art. My grandfather had a painting of a river with some cows in it, for some reason he decided that there were too many cows in the picture. So he took a sticky note and covered up a single cow. There were still cows in the painting but for some reason he just wanted one less cow.
