So someone is actually arguing, in a court of law, that they shouldn't have to recognize marriages that they issued licenses for?  Seriously?

"Yah there are these legal documents that our offices issued and certified and notorized and shiat but I don't think we need to honor them."

SERIOUSLY??

These are people from the same party that won't confirm a qualified Department of Health and Human Services cabinet member because they don't agree with the laws she'd be required to enforce. (Source).

The only thing that surprised me about that is that McConnell admitted she was well-qualified for that position and he was only rejecting her because he didn't like ACA.  Usually you get the whole "I have concerns" BS that belies the actual reason they're rejecting a candidate.

So them being douches doesn't surprise me, them being honest about being douches does. Hell them being honest about anything surprises me.

It took them until, what?, 1978 to let black people in to the Mormon church.  If you were expecting a progressive response from Utah, you were only fooling yourself.

But these are marriages where one boy might touch another boy's no-no place. Or maybe a girl will touch another girl's no-no place, outside of the holy bonds of a polygamous relationship.

So you can clearly understand why they have to appeal.

It never fails to impress me how it is that, in these tough times of budgetary belt-tightening in state after state across our country, there are some places which have the wherewithal to scrape together those precious resources that are required to pay for the truly important needs of their citizens. To the friendly Beehive State, I tip my hat.

"I made you some coffee, and oh - black people aren't cursed spawn of Cain anymore."
"They, uh, aren't?"
"Yeah turns out God changed his mind. Isn't that neat?"
"Uh... I guess we can't be racist anymore. Better start working on that one."

cchris_39: Where does the Bible say that God cursed Cain by making him black?

The Bible states that Cain was cursed and "the mark of Cain" was put upon him.  Many (but not all) denominations interpreted this "mark" as black skin, and determined that black skin was a sign that a person was cursed by God, thus justifying treating them as less than fully human.  Mormons are among the denominations that, until pretty recently, accepted this interpretation.

Seriously.  Study it out.

GWSuperfan: .. and now the lower court decision is stayed pending the appeal

FTL: State officials said the marriages shouldn't be recognized until everybody has guidance from higher courts on the constitutionality of Utah's ban.

OK, let's just assume for a second that a higher court would overturn the lower court ruling and let the ban on gay marriages stand.  Even under those circumstances, do they actually think that higher court would rule these marriages, which the state of Utah issued licenses for and which were legal at the time, to be annulled?

Is that what these bigots really want?  Do they think that instead of having the power to "redefine" marriage, that judges should instead how the power to void marriages which have been legally entered into?

Here's one of my main gripes with fundamentalists: say you win, say that you finally get the power to enact Christian canons into civil law.  What guarantee do you have that it's going to be your denominations canons that get enacted?  Because I'm pretty sure in Utah that it would be Mormons, not Southern Baptists.  And if you tell a Southern Baptist they can't have sweet tea because it has caffeine, then you best get ready for a war.

Newsflash: fundamentalists don't read the Bible to find out what they're supposed to hate, they read the Bible to find imagined justifications for the hate they already had.

The thing is: God also said if anyone tried to punish Cain for murder (which he manifestly committed), God would blast the everliving hell out of that person.  If blacks had the Mark of Cain, then the very first time some Southern cracker whooped a slave, everything east of the Appalachians should have simply ceased to exist in a fiery explosion. QED blacks do not have the Mark of Cain.  On the other hand, if white folk visited you piece on not-Europe, and you tried to make them leave, imperialism happened, bringing you misery and death, and enslavement for generations. QED white people have the Mark of Cain

Civilization doesn't need Utah to stand up for it. Sid Meier and everybody else has moved on. You could argue that Civilization V needs Utah to stand up for it but that would be a rather odd view since states normally don't get involved in issuing responses to video game reviews.

The plaintiffs' attorney, John Mejia of the ACLU of Utah, said the state's last-minute filing "smacks of a delay tactic."

If it takes them any more than a second to smack this down you are dealing with some seriously touched judges.

As GWSuperfan noted, the judges on the 10th circuit are indeed seriously touched - they upheld Utah's request and gave the couples suing until Thursday to file papers explaining why they think the papers giving a reason why the state of Utah should be required to recognize it's own marriage licenses, and which several parts of the state such as the DMV and tax collectors already do.
