The problem with Tor is that there are some sites that block its IP ranges. FARK being one of them.

2014-06-05 12:40:16 PM
Um, subby, why should I trust THIS site to protect me from other sites?

Have you seen the movie?!

"Content was blocked because it was not signed by a valid security certificate.

That's really funny to me.

Why do I have to give them my e-mail?
Is this an NSA site collecting e-mail addresses of people who seek better security?

Hmm.  I didn't think the NSA had those backdoor-filled privacy packs ready yet.  I guess they worked a couple of weekends...

Call me old fashioned, but I don't download crap others insist I should download for my own good. Explain what it is, not just "Download This!"

... and this is from the nearby posted Fark article titled Heartbleed Redux:

The revelation of the bug on the one-year anniversary of the Guardian's first publication of Snowden's NSA leaks adds to that grim lesson, says security researcher Soltani. He points to efforts by privacy groups like Reset the Net that have used the Snowden revelations as inspiration to push Internet users and companies to implement more pervasive encryption. Those efforts are undermined, he points out, by the fact that some of the oldest and most widely used encryption protocols may still have fundamental flaws. "There are huge efforts by companies and activists to deploy tools that 'add proven security,'" he says,  quoting Reset the Net's website. "Yet there's very little actual work and support of the underlying tools that are being deployed, like OpenSSL. It's pretty shameful that the core library that practically the entire internet relies on for transport security is maintained by a handful of under-resourced engineers."

I would support the following reforms:

1. No lobbyist or their relatives may ever serve as government a government official. (Head of the FCC, I'm looking at you)

2. No household should ever have less than two providers of any public utility or service. ( if you have hard-wiring to your house, you break up providers until there are two available for cable, phone, electrics, whatever)

3. Any provider that owns physical plant and other property must annually spend at least a fixed percentage of their revenues upgrading and expanding their hardware beyond current capacity.

So to protect my privacy, you want me to download some big software package from some website I never heard of before and trust that it's safe.

Great.

I think I'll pass.

(yeah, I know who EFF are - I just don't know about this new website.)

Apple used tout 'security through obscurity'. MS stole that too now I guess.

Good luck with your petition. I'm sure the NSA, CIA, FBI, and whatever other alphabet agency will get right on this. Like they did every other time they got spying on their own citizens.

Even if TOR isn't a big honeypot, that's what they want you to think.

I suspect that the reason most people aren't criminals is because they're convinced they'll get caught.

It is. Your data is only encrypted between you and the exit nodes, so a lot of exit nodes monitor the traffic going through looking for something interesting. IIRC there were news stories long before Snowden talking about foreign embassies leaking information that got logged by tor exit nodes.

That's where you would be wrong!  They can still go through your trash and steal them, so you need to drain them off into your shredder, or even better, a fireplace!

No, no, no. The only safe thing to do is run a powerful magnet along the entire length of the cable.
