Initially I was like "this should come down to who serves the best burrito in San Diego" but holy crap did San Diego storm that list!  Dining options for my trip in two weeks... SET

"This project involves a mix of seriousness and whimsy. Anna and I both have a lifelong obsession with Mexican-American food. We also know that burritos are not a matter of great national importance."

You couldn't be more wrong, Nate. This affects us all.

I don't regret living in the middle of nowhere overall, but missing out on this sort of thing does bum me out.  No taco trucks or burrito kiosks to be found here :(

HRD does a great Korean burrito (#5 on the VORB list), but that line is ridiculous.  No phone orders either.

El Farolito, I'll see you this weekend.

There was a Cuban place that shared space with a lunch spot in Center Plaza in Boston that made burritos like I have never tasted.  It was perfect.

They moved to Cambridge to start a catering business under a different name and I have never been able to locate them.

If I'm going to eat all those calories anyway, I'd rather have a chimi and a couple huge-ass margaritas at Macayo's in Phoenix or Tempe.

They have one in Vegas, but I've never been.

The real answer is probably a taco truck with no website. But Adalberto's in San Diego/Sacramento is the best otherwise

Hi, I'm a white girl named Ashley, and after I pick up a tasty pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, I text my BFF Jill and meet up with her at Chipotle for some authentic Mexican burritos. Oh look, Jill scored us tickets for Avicii! TOTES MCGOTES AWESOME!

Why the Chipotle hate - I get it is not authentic - but if it is that, Qdoba, Taco Bell or starvation - I'm going Chipotle.

But to the best in Chicago;

I will fight someone to defend the honor of South Texas' Tex-Mex, but even as a homer, I'll freely admit that California does better burritos.

Why? Chipotle food is bland and someone should be executed for their soggy chips.

/and overpriced as I recall
//but maybe it's improved since I haven't darkened it doors in 7 years.

Why would you put the North East on the map?

Wouldn't it just be easier to go over to Robert Rodriguez's house when he's got all his cousins over, like Danny and the Twins? Because THAT would be the best burrito ever.

El Castillito, San Francisco. Hands down.

Try it, srsly.

2014-06-05 04:24:25 PM
This is a stupid idea, as burrito preference is not just individual, but also tends to be regional.

The burritos I enjoyed in the Chicago area are nowhere to be found in northern California, but nobody here seems to realize how lacking their burritos are. They don't even question not having the burrito grilled slightly after wrapping so that the tortilla wrapping doesn't get soggy and flop open as you are trying to eat it.

Adalberto's is pretty much a guaranteed visit every time I go to SD on travel.  One of their chorizo and egg burritos is enough for breakfast and lunch on the plane ride home.

Original Freebirds in Isla Vista.
/ The moment when I asked for a steak burrito and the guy took an actual sirloin and cut it up right in front of me.

// Haven't been there since the chain started so I have no idea if that location stayed awesome, but back in '99 it was the greatest thing ever.  The new chain not so much.

I prefer Qdoba to Chipotle. I took some grief in another thread a few weeks ago for saying that, but I stand by it. Neither is great, but the burritos are about the same, Qdoba's queso hits the spot, and Qdoba gives you more, and better, chips.

Considering it became a chain in 1990, I would guess that "new chain" is probably just the same as your experience back in '99.

I came here to recommend the carne asada burrito at Las Hadas in El Cajon (assuming they're still there, it's been years). Now I'm off to RTFA.

Somis Market in Somis, CA.  Tiny, roach infested place with a small store on one side and a small restaurant on the other.  Wasn't all that unusual growing up to see limos pull up out front and the driver run in to get a take out order.
