The opening shot from Star Wars is one of the best first  moments ever.

As for scenes, from modern movies there's really nothing quite like the initial scene from There Will be Blood, with Johnny Greenwood's incredibly harsh score playing, with no dialog, as everything that can go wrong in a mine shaft does go wrong. Sure as hell sets the tone for the movie.

The opening scene of the Matrix is pretty epic, but I think it's more the nostalgia of being blown away by it the first time I saw it.

It's hard to beat the opening crawl and capture of Leia.

That's what I was going to suggest. If there's any opening scene that just sets the tone for the whole movie, that's probably it.

Goldfinger and The Living Daylights were my favorite Bond openers.

Not what I would call a full-blown scene, as such, but I've always thought the opening shot in A Clockwork Orange was attention-getting.

Solty Dog: Transformers: The animated movie

"Arbulus, look! It's Unicron!"

I showed that movie to my Transformers-addicted son last year, along with all the G1 episodes.

I've lost count of how many times he's watched that movie. He likes them better than the recent movies. Can't say I disagree with him, either.

\Rodimus had it a lot tougher than Optimus did.

My wife and I watched that last night. I had seen it once before and she hadn't... so I even knew it was coming and I still f*cking teared up.

No opening scene, but best opening line-

There was a demon that lived in the air. They said whoever challenged him would die. Their controls would freeze up, their planes would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, seven hundred and fifty miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the sound barrier.

Heavy Metal as well.

Animated movies seem to have the best opening scenes.
