It was an explosion.

There is no way that the 300lb manhole cover could be made airborne by a car, and given the position of a truck's rear wheels it would be impossible to achieve that trajectory without hitting the underside of the truck that hiked it first.
It's a 300 pound chunk of steel, not a pebble.

Also, the cover would have had to be out of it's hole in the first place, and that would have caused an immediate accident on the Cross Bronx, long before anyone had a chance to run over the thing.
I suspect ConEd payoffs to investigators because the amount (hundreds per year) of exploding covers in NYC is prompting people to demand that ConEd fix,and update their stuff, which they don't want to do because it would cut into profits.

They would rather settle the occasional law suit instead.

Yeah, that explanation sounded pretty fishy to me, too.

I knew a Jewish kid that got hit with a manhole cover from a gas line explosion. He got a nice bit of the retardation, but a bundle of money. He drove a BMW to highschool and he always had a girlfriend. I wonder how he made out as a retarded grown up. I hope this guys family gets a bunch of money, he looked like a good family man.

I kept reading on through your little story, eagerly anticipating the part where his religious preference would become relevant.

Also, all BMW drivers are mentally deficient, regardless of the status of local manhole covers vis a vis their noggins.

He's right - I couldn't even spell BMW when I owned mine. People would ask me what I drove and I'd just drool at them until my spine snapped under the weight of all those gold chains. Eventually I bought something old and Japanese and now I'm missing a pinkie.

/Also, watch out for a man with hooks.

I remember reading a story, years ago, about a New Yorker who'd claimed that they'd just about seen everything, until the day they were walking along and (yet another) underground explosion blew the manhole cover near them about 50 feet into the air... They were understandably startled, yet the prize goes to the guy about 50-100 feet away who yelled "HEADS!" before it hit the ground...

And as to TFA, that's a hell of a way to go, but hopefully the family can get something out of it, provided the lawyers don't suck all of it away on "costs"...

a car hits a 300lb manhole, kicking it up high enough to go through the windshield of a tractor trailer?  that seems a bit far-fetched to me.  and how does a manhole on the highway get dislodged by a car in the first place?

my money is on an explosion.

Almost shat myself on the way in to work this morning when a dump truck kicked-up a big hunk of wood in the road that flew straight into my windshield at 60 MPH, so I'm getting a kick...

I agree with the fishiness of the explanation, but manhole covers don't weigh 300lbs.  Maybe a third of that at most, and it can be proved by union DPW workers pulling it up with just a hook; and we know those guys won't lift over 100lbs without a team of 6.  Even if it weighs as little as 50lbs, going through the windshield would still be fatal, but don't let that stand in the way of everyone wanting to exaggerate like professional journalists.

You'r right that it was an explosion.  But why are you pinning it on ConEd?  Aren't there other services in NYC that own manholes?  Do the hundreds af exploding covers belong to ConEd.
I'm betting on sewer gas.
