Cost of a Harrier: $24 - $30 million

Cost of a Super Hornet: $60 million

Or to put it another way, those two planes crashing cost more than every single person on Fark today will make this year, combined. And more than everyone commenting in this thread combined will make in their entire lives.

Sigh.

And yet we can't increase the budget for NASA... Nope... can't do that... THAT'S a waste of taxpayer money!

So you're that sure Steve Ballmer isn't on here somewhere?

Yeah, tha sucks.  Not only because they are damn cool and awesome jets, but because they are HUGELY expensive.

Honestly, I don't think anyone really cares about that though.  Seriously.  "The government just pissed away $2 billion."  "Well, they've got to have it somewhere.  They never have trouble coming up with it."

This is sort of how you can explain the daily cost of 2 wars.

So, really, the loss of one or two jets means nothing.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV-8B_Harrier_II

Approximately 340 aircraft were produced in a 22-year production program that ended in 2003.

As of July 2013, approximately 110 aircraft have been damaged beyond repair since the type entered service in 1985.

I'm glad both pilots are safe and from what I've heard, noone on the ground was ingered in the land based crash.

On a lighter note, the radio news on the way in to work announced that the super hornet pilot "ejected from the craft after it crashed into the ocean". To which I couldn't help but think: "Wouldn't he have been better off ejecting before the plane crashed?"

Yes.

Even if he ever HAD wandered by, the sheer personal hate would have turned him into a blubbering mess by now. Or he would have grown a spine.

And since he has clearly failed to do the latter, it must be the former.

Also: anyone with $1bn+ typically has neither the time, energy, or desire to slum on a site like this. They're attention whores. They'll go get their knobs slobbed on Reddit.

I wonder if a high speed, night landing meant he hit the water a little quicker than it took for him to realize he missed the ship.

Relax those harriers are at the end of their life. Not sure about the f-18. Wait til those jar heads start crashing f-35s. Then ask yourself why the fark do marines have jets.

He's a hero because he stayed on board to prevent the plane from crashing into a school of fish.
