There was a story about these on NPR ~last week. They talked to some of the soldiers who work with the dogs and how they learn to not get attached to the dogs as they may have to be transferred to another unit, the dog may die, the soldier may be injured and sent home, etc. Guy sounded like he was on the verge of crying the whole show.

The injures are absolutely heartbreaking. Those dogs have no idea why this is happening to them.

I'd go hug my cat, but he's a dick.

You can see that in the pictures... not.

I'm always amazed by how incredibly loyal dogs can be and how willing they are to give up their independence to work for us.  I gotta say, the shot of the soldier sleeping on the floor in the hospital with his dog pretty much put me over the edge.

My cat would do that for me. Seriously, I have had 5 different cats in my life, this is the only one who is dog like.

Chases toys, wants constant attention, will come when called. She even hissed at a Jehovah dude when he knocked. Smart cat. ;-)

Why in the name of Chesty Puller does the Marine in picture #5 have his rifle laying in the dirt and dust?

I did a GIS for "mountain of steak", but the results were not what I was hoping for.

Anyway, mountain of steak.

Here's a real tearjerker if anybody hasn't seen it. A Marine went to plead his case to get "his" dog back at a state capital building, but they completely duped him.

Do the dogs wear hearing protection?

War is loud.

So many good dogs...I want to pet them all.

Stupid job doesn't leave me enough hours to have a dog of my own.  I'll have to visit my parents again and pet theirs.

I understand all the reasons - they save human lives. But on some level it seems obscenely unfair for us to involve these trusting, loving, loyal creatures in our sick, vicious killer ape shiat.

It wasn't my story. That's what the soldier in the  interview who had lost his leg(s) to a roadside bomb, said.

I agree, I hate that dogs are used like this.

Yeah, I'd MUCH rather we treated them like the Chinese do: probably NSFF photo.

Well, If that is you are into, fine.
I am just saying that I feel dogs should not be used as tools of war.

Hopefully those dogs didn't fetch the stick grenades.

I once fostered a service dog (seeing-eye, diabetic helper, that sort of thing) puppy. Giving her back was heartbreaking...

While not happy that dogs are put in the amount of danger the military puts them in, I'm glad they are treated like soldiers, and when injured, treat them instead of "Ahh, fark it."  BLAM!*
