(PBS)   New report suggests that Earth is on the verge of another great extinction; most at risk of vanishing forever are people who can properly use their turn signals and distinguish "their" from "they're" from "there"   (pbs.org) divider line 167

Throw in "People who get off an escalator and just stop" and "People who congregate right in the middle of walkways, oblivious to the fact that they're blocking others" and I'm ok with it.

In my completely unscientific opinion, if you can measure that we are at the brink, we are probably already under going a mass extinction.

We've been in the Sixth Great Extinction Event for some time, any where from centuries to thousands of years to all of human history.

The background rate of extinction is about one species in a million, while we are largely responsible for upping that by three orders of magnitude.

My guess is that the Mass Extinction started thousands of years ago when humans began to hit the islands of the pacific with pigs, rats, dogs, and the mongoose and also helped push mega-fauna into extinction. These played vital roles in the ecosystems and thus the natural world was gone before we realized that it existed.

Tropical islands lost 95% of their birds, especially the flightless varieties and those that nest on or near the ground. A few centuries ago, Europeans, who had hitherto kept pretty close to shore, got the compass and other innovations that allowed them to spread out to many islands the natives never reached and added more destructive animals to the mix, including goats, sheep, cattle, and horses,.These can reduce an island to a desert by over-grazing, trampling, and killing birds and breaking eggs.

From 1800 AD onward, our population took over from fire, hunting of big game, animals, and disease as the main risk to other species because we went from one billion to seven and rising. We invented machines and other things that animals have no extincts to deal with and began to do massive habitat damage by building roads, cutting or burning forests, etc.

The land that we thing of as wild is no such thing. Much of it has been altered by human activity for thousands of years. Just as diseases like smallbox, influenza, and so forth, swept before the Europeans when they arrived in the New World, creating the illusion that the Europeans were settling a nearly empty continent (it was, only they were the ones who unwittingly nearly emptied it) so much of the "virgin" forest we see today has been completely changed by forests fires started by natives to clear brush for hunting or small scale farming, while our forests have been cut over several times with massive changes in the soil, biota and local climate each time.

The world looks nothing like it did in 1500, even where populations are thin today.
