He was hunting for bear and he found one. Sounds like a successful hunt to me.

You see? You see? Guns aren't bad. Was the bear carrying a gun? No. No he wasn't. You gun grabbing liberals need to study that out.

This is part of the allure of hunting dangerous game.  The idea that you could be attacked.  That the tables could be turned with dire consequences.

This is precisely why people go hunting dangerous game in the first place.  So for all of you saying "good!", you're applauding a feature, not a bug.

People hunt these animals precisely because there is a risk of this happening.

Yeah, how is this FAIL?  From what I got out o the article, the bear hadn't been a nuisance or killed any livestock - what is the problem?  You hunt bear, be prepared for potential consequences.

/Dumbass tag seems more appropriate here.

And that's why you have a backup shooter armed with a pistol grip pump 12 gauge loaded with Brenneke X slugs and 000 buckshot. Your bolt action 7mm magnum with the scope isn't going to be too damn useful when the bear pops out of the brush 15 feet away from you.

My boss is a hunter.  Every year get's his bear tag and heads out.  Every year I tell him I'm rooting for the bears.

Yeah.  Go bears.

2014-06-03 07:53:34 AM
The thing about this story that bothers me is that the hunter was injured in such a way that officials were unable to get information from him about the attack. Which means his face was probably torn off, so he can't speak. And it might have been/probably was a grizzly.

*shudder*

It's june. I'm guessing that the bear was a female protecting her cubs... Also, what did the bear ever do to you that made you want to kill it in the first place.

Sure they do. That's why the hunters often sleep in cabins, ride ATVs to the hunting spots, use chemical attractants/repellents, sit in tree stands, and use optics on their rifles to shoot the game from a distance. They want to have that element of DANGER.

We know you're totally different and whatnot, because you tell us so in every remotely-related thread. We don't need to see the same pictures again for the kajillionth time.

If hunters really had balls like that and weren't going there with complete overkill then I would agree... send them out with these and we'll call it a test of manhood:

/otherwise, it's viagra on the cheap.

Except that in that case, the bear has all the advantages, because it's bigger, stronger, faster, and has a greater reach.   So it's not exactly "fair", is it?

No, in order to balance the equation, the human must have some sort of ranged weapon.  Maybe a wooden bow, and a stout spear with a cross-bar.

Or, alternatively, maybe something like this:

img.fark.net

A British Baker Rifle in .62" caliber, with a sword-bayonet.  You get a single shot, and if you don't bring down the bear with that, you have to fix bayonet* and got toe-to-toe with Yogi.

That seems fair to me.

*Because of the way it's constructed, you can't really fire the gun with the bayonet attached

Yes, because that's what hunters of dangerous game always do.

/Actually sounds more like the typical deer hunter.

It's a feature, not a bug.  It doesn't suck, that's what he *WANTED*, otherwise he'd be out hunting deer or rabbits or something like that.

Not necessarily.  It very well could have been a black bear.  It's less likely, but not unheard of.

limeyfellow: Sad that now they will make sure to kill the bear because of some idiot getting themselves mauled.

How?  The bear was gone by the time the guy's father, who was a short distance away, got to him.  No way to identify which bear it was.

Plus, this isn't like a bear that goes down into town and starts rummaging through garbage cans and eating the neighborhood cats or something.  It's in a wilderness area, and just doing what bears do.  The assumption here isn't that this is a nuisance bear, which would call for the bear to be relocated or put down, depending on the circumstances.

The hunter takes all the risk here, and there is no expectation that when you intrude on the bears territory that it's a problem if it attacks you.

Now, on the other hand, in my region we just had a case where a black bear, which had been captured and relocated *TWICE* before, was found in a suburban residential area again, and the DEC ended up killing it.  Unfortunately, it was a "3 strikes and you're out" situation, and since black bears are a dime a dozen, there wasn't a zoo that had the room for it.

Had they not done that, someone may have gotten seriously hurt or killed.  And yes, black bears do sometimes prey on humans.  In fact, the common wisdom about "playing dead" doesn't apply to black bear attacks:  If you are being attacked by a grizzly bear, it's likely because you intruded upon its "space", and it perceives you to be a threat.  Playing dead is a valid strategy in that case, because the bear no longer sees you as a threat, and will cease attacking at some point.

With a black bear, if it physically attacks you (not talking a bluff charge here), it's usually because it wants to eat you.  In that case, you should fight back against the bear like your life depends on it, because it probably does.  Playing dead will just make you, well, really dead.
