"We need to change the way people are described to be responsive to who they really are, which will change how society views people with disabilities," Emily Rogers, chair of the SAIL coalition, recently told members of a Senate committee.

Oh my farking gawd!! I have a hard time believing these people and I are from the same species.

I think George Carlin said it best in Brain Droppings when he talked about political correctness. Wish I had a copy on hand to prove this...

"Hospitals no longer use the term 'handicap' because of its historically negative connotation. It is only used in the most extreme cases were no treatment may be possible."

That, and golf.

This is retarded (pun intended). This is just like when businesses want employess to call people "diferently-abled" instead of "disabled". Guess what, jerkoff? If they can't do things that normal people can becuase of a physical or mental handicapped, they arent differently-abled. They are disabled. A truck gets a flat, it's disabled. It aint differently abled.

And stephenv, don't quit your dayjob. Making fun of Republicans went out in the 90's.

2004-02-10 08:31:26 PM
What about being an asshole? Is that a disability?
If so, it's not my fault that I call the crippled cripples. I'm just an "individual with emotional expression issues."

2004-02-10 08:37:06 PM
Why don't we just make up a name like "the BlarfSparg" for the disabled? That way people's widdle self esteems won't be damaged by even having the word "disability" associated with them.

Because in three years all the kids would be saying "You farking BlarfSparg" to all their friends and all the PC farktards would have something new to take offense to.

Language will change no matter how much people try to stop it. We've gone from Crazy to Lunatic to Insane to Mentally Ill and there will likely be a new version by the end of the year.

Ah, good, now the National Federation of the Blind has yet ANOTHER euphamistic term to hate and fight against.

I find it is a classic, timeless pastime that can be enjoyed virtually anywhere by people of all ages.

Haven't we gone through this like a half-dozen times? I think that "handicapped" was originally the polite word for "crippled." Then I think that "disabled" became the polite word for "handicapped." Now it's "differently abled" or "individuals with disabilities."

Of course the words have "historically negative connotations." They mean negative things: there's stuff you can't do that normal people can do. Duh. That's never going to go away. Changing the word only gets rid of the connotations until everyone figures out what it means again.

Anyway, I think the most insulting thing to the handicapped is that we think they have to be coddled so much.

It's also very gay.

I'd hate to see if the United Negro College Fund or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People came to town.

They'd have to present themselves as the United Project That Aquires Funds For Individuals Who Happen To Be Of African Descent Yet Born In America, and the Society For The Advancement Of Individuals With A Greater Percentage of Dermatological Melatonin Content Than Those of European Descent.

2004-02-10 09:06:08 PM
as long as they're not called people

2004-02-10 09:09:35 PM
doodievomit: I think you actually meant to say that this individual fecal matter with a history of mental handicapibility is differently abled. It is also an individual abstract idea which prefers the company of same-gender partners.

In this way, the fecal matter is reminded that it is an individual object first, and mentally handicapable differently abled second. Very important.

If the "individuals with disabilities" want to be seen as people first, why do they need special parking spots? Most of the people who park in these spots get out of their cars and walk right in to the store. I think a lot of them are "individuals with head-up-the-assitis".

2004-02-10 09:31:37 PM
I prefer to call them "The conveniently parked".

There's a sign in a street near my house.

CAUTION DEAF CHILDREN IN STREET.

If'd gone PC and put CAUTION HEARING-IMPAIRED CHILDREN IN STREET by the time you'd read the thing, it would be too late. BAM!

BTW, its pretty rusty. Those deaf children probably grew up 20 years ago, and the town is just too lazy to take it down.

Kinda like those decaying "Deer Crossing" signs in the middle of a subdivision with nary a tree around for miles...

Who is this "Bill?" I didn't vote for him. I voted for Kodos.

Who is this "Bill?" I didn't vote for him. I voted for Kodos.

I did some research and it turns out that almost every law in the entire country has a direct link to this "bill."

His fingerprints are everywhere. We're through the looking glass, people.

I like being known as a crazy person (because I am, diagnosed and normal because of meds). It helps because I am like the Hulk in a lot of ways, if I get mad (not just upset or anoyed) I open the biggest can of whoopass on that person. (Beat the s*it out of a sixth grader when I was in third). Adrenaline does funny things to me. (note: this hasn't happened since I got on the meds, so don't worry)

Just another manifestation of the highly-evolved successor to McCarthyism, called political correctness.

Illegal alien = "undocumented worker" or "undocumented immigrant"

Whore = "sex worker"

Marriage = anything, anyone, it's just a lifestyle choice

and on and on.

A slippery slope indeed.

2004-02-10 11:09:14 PM
Wheee, semantics games are so much fun. Wait, is that offensive? Is it okay to use that word "fun" in that way? Oh my gosh, I better just shut up, lest I offend someone. I need someone smarter than me to tell me how to use words in a non-offensive way.

2004-02-10 11:26:45 PM
I want to be known as "God's gift to Mankind". I find any other reference to myself degrading and offensive. If you don't use my prefered name, I'll sue you, you retarded bastards!

If the "individuals with disabilities" want to be seen as people first, why do they need special parking spots?

Ideally, those spots will be extra wide, or have additional space marked off alongside them, for people like me who need room to put down a wheelchair lift from a large, converted/accessible van, or others who need room to transfer from their car to a wheelchair.
(Though all of this has nothing to do with a desire to "be seen as people first".)

Most of the people who park in these spots get out of their cars and walk right in to the store. I think a lot of them are "individuals with head-up-the-assitis".

Yep, that's true. Asshats abound.

Fark em. They get the best parking spots. Gimps should thank god that most humans are slightly more inteligent than wild animals. The the animal kingdom has a thing called survival of the fittest, at least theyre smart enough to kill the weak or disabled ones before they become a drain on society.

I have nerve damage from a motorcycle accident that has caused my right arm to be "permanently partially disabled" (the official term). You know how I refer to myself? I call myself a cripple. It's mostly self-deprecating, but it also shows that I just don't care how people label me.

I don't know if I would be as strong-willed about it as the 'quad' is who posted earlier in the thread, had I become a quad or even a para. You're a tough SOB, dude. :)

PC-ness farking blows. The idiot biatch who thinks that saying "individuals with..." will improve the way people think about "us cripples" is dead wrong. What it will do is make most people think the disabled are a bunch of whiny biatches who are so insecure that they need to change their label every few years:

-the lame

-the crippled

-the handicapped (remember, this was supposed be PC in its time)

-the disabled

-the differently-abled

-individuals with...

What the fark is next? I shudder to think. Just call me a farking cripple and be done with it.

'Course, none of the people I know are ok, but then, neither am I. Waitadamnminute, that would imply that there are dozens of people out there that are ok, but we know that isn't true...

/i'm confused and my head hurts......

Crosshair what if all my friends have mental illness. I think it means i live in a weird little town. Some of my friends call itr derry califonia

2004-02-11 05:24:31 AM
I used to think that mentally disabled and politically correct were the same thing, but a friend pointed out that it was insulting to the disabled to think that way.

2004-02-11 06:06:47 AM
In the New World Order I guess I would be "The individual with physical disabilities, formerly known as SpinStopper."

Personally, I'd rather keep my nickname of Gimpy.

Fark em. They get the best parking spots.

What's even cooler is I can park at a meter for free. I love it when I can pull into a spot that is next to a handicapped spot. Pisses of people like you to no end.

kill the weak or disabled ones before they become a drain on society.

Drain this.

Convicted felons = Individuals with criminal records
Child molesters = Individuals who fark children
Drug Addicts = Individuals with substance abuse problems
Corrupt Politicians = Individuals who misuse public offices for their own benefit

I just think thye "people-first" terminology should be extended to all our citizens

2004-02-11 09:52:09 AM
Know what would be cool?

If we could come up with a word that MEANS "people with disabilities" so that we don't have to type so many damn letters.

Oh, right. WE ALREADY HAVE THAT. The word is HANDICAPPED.

"People of African American decent" = "Black folks". (Especially since SOME BLACK FOLKS are not FROM AFRICA).

I'm not racist. But I'm called "white" ALL THE DAMN TIME. So guess what - anyone who is offended by being called:
- black
- white
- brown
- yellow
- red

Can just suck my balz.

However, I do support BANNING certain words. For example, someone who engages in sexual intercourse with a CHILD should not get a word like "pedophile". That word is TOO NICE. They should have to be called "CHILD-FARKERS", even in the news...

ie; "convicted pedophile Priest John Smith was found stabbed today"

should be: "convicted child-farking Priest John Smith was found dead from a steam-roller wound to the head..."

PC bullshiat!

A crip is a crip and that's all there is to it. Changing it to disabled makes it sound a bit better.

I watched two cartoon shows Rocket Power and The Wild Thornberrys with my niece dealing with disabled people and they made a mash of it, especially Rocket Power where they portrayed it as not being nice to refer to anyone's disability at all. (The subject was a girl snowboarder with an artificial leg.)

BTW, I'm disabled. I suffer from depression among a few other mental problems and I refer to myself as a nut. I'm mentally ill and know it and phrasing it differently doesn't make things better. Better Congress should spend the money they're wasting rephrasing the terminology on reestablishing my treatment clinic, which just got mostly shut down due to lack of Medicare funds.

Cripes! They keep this up and people are going to be so sensitive that any descriptive phrase concerning them will be looked on as an insult.

And let us not forget "individuals of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community" tag (oops, I forgot "queer youth"!), plus the obligatory self-flagellating apologia of "not that there's anything wrong with that".

Tiptoeing through life in the Orwellian World of Correctness...fun, eh?

Este chupa!
