There is no incentive for FIFA to not be corrupt until a rival organizing body gains power and credibility.

No, no you didn't.  That's one of the more transparent false equivalencies I've seen on Fark today.

No. I'm sorry. Saying that everyone's corrupt is a classic, cowardly copout. You might as well say rich people control everything and normal people will never accomplish anything great unless they whore themselves out to rich people before swallowing a bullet and doing us all a favor.

So what if Qatar's bid is corrupt? Now is a perfect time for people who aren't complete defeatists to come in and slap the right people around and clean the system out for a decade or so. Keep that little "everyone cheats" sad sack story to yourself.

A whole lot of THIS.  The World Cup is basically second only to the Olympics(and barely at that) so constantly bringing the corruption to the forefront and embarrassing FIFA at every opportunity will go a long to making changes.

That and there is a very good chance, on top of the people dying to build the shiatty stadiums, that the players and spectators face a pretty decent health risk from the temperatures.

I came here to say this. This is the first time I can ever remember that a sporting organization accepted a bid and assumed a known risk of people dying while watching the games. There is always an incidental chance, sure, but when the temperatures are known to be dangerous at the time of year that the games will take place, it is corruption of the worst sort, almost depraved indifference.

These men are not only bought and paid for, but thanks to that money they have demonstrated how vicious and cruel they are by condemning people to horrible deaths by heatstroke. The only good thing about it is that we will break the stranglehold they have on world soccer when the first people die and we go looking to hang them from the nearest tree.

I don't buy it. There will need to be some fundamental change before FIFA gives a damn about corruption. A little embarrassment is easy to deal with from your yacht on the way to your villa.

Short of several major national football associations jumping FIFA and forming an international federation of their own, I don't think FIFA is ever going to give a damn about corruption.

You know, a few years ago, the British mags were raising a stink about Harry Redknapp "taking a bung" (or bribe as it's called here) while manager at Portsmouth. I sent no less than three headlines containing that awkward phrasing to Fark and was rejected all three times, which made me a bit bitter at the higher-ups for a time but I'm over it now.

Ok, I'll admit to being That Guy who only watches soccer during the World Cup... but does Quatar not have their own league, or at least belong to a league?  And during non-world-cup years do they not play soccer inside their country?

I haven't been following this issue that closely... but I'm kinda surprised.  They don't already have stadiums and teams playing year round?

1) I admit I'm not a big futbol/soccer fan and do not follow the sport closely, but what part of this story is the corruption?

People come and mow my neighbor's lawn.  They don't mow my lawn.  Corruption?  No, it's just my neighbors pay to have their lawn mowed, and I do not pay.

Go to any theater or sporting event.  The folks who pay more for tickets get better seats.  Is this corruption?

If multiple cities/countries want to host the World Cup, why shouldn't it go to the one willing to pay the most?

This isn't a charity, it's a business.  I'm not saying in all things only money matters, but why is it corruption in those things where money is the only consideration?  Are all auction corrupt because they are won by the highest bidder?

2) Not only should the location of the 2022 World Cup not be changed, the UN should pass a resolution forbidding a location change.

You decided to have a system where you agree to play soccer on the surface of the sun just because they're the highest bidder?  Fine, but now you have to play soccer on the surface of the sun.

Wow.  I have no idea how the stands of these stadiums will end up, but I've been on bleachers at a NASCAR race in 90 F and in direct sunlight.  I came very, very close to passing out.  I lost my memory for a bit and found myself at the concession stand ordering myself 4 huge lemonades just to get something back in my system.

Luckily, most of the race was at night, which eventually was perfectly enjoyable.

Qatar is a country of 1.6 million people. Their existing stadia are almost woefully inadequate for WC play in every respect (size, facilities, access to public transit). The WC is held during the summer. It always has been. The Qatari league is played in the fall, winter, and spring. They want the WC to adhere to their schedule. They also have a horrible safety record their buildings, and there are legitimate human rights concerns about the foreign workers, LGBT people who might visit, and alcohol/sex at the WC.

They had promised to get AC for the stadia. They did not.
Their proposal said they would honor the normal timeframe of June/July. They want to change it.

The Qatari bid was so woefully bad and laughably farfetched it never should have seen the light of day.

"The Fark Fitba Prediction League for the World Cup is now open - all welcome. A simple fun game to fill in the excitement gaps in [say] Switzerland Vs Ecuador, or Netherlands Vs. Spain

Go to: http://predictor.talksport.co.uk

Please join under your Fark name or closest possible. Slapdash amateurism is very much in our idiom.

Search for our private mini-league: FD3AE-RFX

See the Talksports pages for help on making predictions.

We'll take scores from the 1st round of games commencing 12th June. If you miss this deadline don't worry, you won't be far behind the leaders.."
