I'm having a birthday sleepover for my son and 5 of his friends this Saturday (they're 12.) This game is going to be on heavy rotation. I hope there isn't any bloodshed.

Can some Mario Kart enthusiast explain to me the best way to cut tight corners in this game? I haven't played Mario Kart since SNES and I just got this and I suck at sharp turns. I read somewhere that I'm technically not supposed to be steering most of the time but trying to drift through the course as much as possible. This sounds crazy but is it right?

Of course he's pissed. The Year of Luigi is over, and he probably won't get another one until 2043.

If an NPC is being a collosal dick  to you in MK8, 90% chance it's Waluigi.  I secretly think they programmed it giving him perfect aim and a deadly hate of human players.

I haven't played a Mario Kart game since Double Dash, but drifting was the main method of getting around in that game (drift to build boost)

Yes.  Play a course that has a wide open track and slow curves to practice getting used to drifting and then move on to courses with tighter corners.

So far, the biggest dickheads seem to be Baby Daisy, Mario, and Wendy.  Fark Wendy.

Thanks, and one more thing about drifting. I notice if I hit the drift button more than once I can like kind of hop and cut more, but it slows me down. Is this how I'm supposed to get around tight bends, or just start drifting earlier and really hold the stick toward the turn?

Depends on your style of play, I guess. Do you know how to get miniboosts?  It's a part of drifting where you steer left and right some while drifting and the sparks coming out of your wheels change color.

This is how you do it on the Wii version but the mechanics are basically the same. Note that in 8, both bikes and karts can get the double boost.

I've played a bunch of the Wii version (MK was my reason for buying a Wii in the first place) and I found vehicle choice to be more important. I like the Mach Bike since I could turn crazy tight with it. I could never personally drive another vehicle any better though. I really wanted to get good at the Sprinter because it just looked cool.

You're welcome.  Playing at the higher levels, there's no other way to win.  It also makes the game a lot faster and funner because the mechanics start to make a hell of a lot more sense.  The game is built around drifting.

My girlfriend said she liked it better, since she "always hated battle mode".

But seriously: " You have 2 minutes to shoot as many dudes as you can while driving in circles.  "  Doesn't even remotely compare to the n64 era of camping on blockfort, shooting red shells at suckers.

One thing I have noticed is that you can't continue a double boost through the chicanes or other S turns anymore... or maybe it is just me.  In DD once you counter steer to move into the second charge, you can tap the drift button again (changing the direction of the steer) and continue the boost drift.  So far I haven't figured it out in 8.

MKWii used a simple drift-to-boost timer (hold the drift for X time, get single boost; hold for Y time, get double boost) rather than the steer-countersteer mechanics from previous versions.  (which is why "snaking" doesn't really work in MKWii.)

I'm pretty sure MK8 is the same.

The wheel is the best control option.

You can use whatever you need to to feel like a winner, but my wheel will destroy you.

This was true in Wii-Kart at least. Friends used to have me use control+nunchuck to handicap me, I still usually won, and all 4 of us had all the achievements on our own copies of MarioKart Wii, so none of us were suck-tastic.

Probably not, but I'm worried they might move it to their next platform and consider the WiiU a loss.  Nintendo has had a history of changing platforms with their 1st and 2nd party games.  Still think it's a very low chance, but I find it hard to believe it's coming out this year like they've claimed.

ugh, if the Xenoblade sequel doesn't come out for the WiiU, then they've lost a console sale. I have planned to buy the console exclusively for that game when it comes out. Promo trailers have looked extremely enticing.
