Is it only learning a language that delays dementia or is it any type of activity that exercises cognitive skills?  Would learning to read music offer the same benefits?  Learn calculus or other higher maths?

As with most human faculties, use it or lose it.

As a trilingual with the mental maturity of a six year old, I support this theory.

I was just talking to a coworker about learning a new language.  Both of us work in IT so we've decided the most useful language for us to learn is, Hindi.

Does Rosetta Stone teach that?

My slow brain needs help with its aging?

Haven't we known this for years?  Learning a new language, or a new skill generally, has long been recommended to slow the effects of Alzheimer's.  Hell, even crosswords and the like have some limited effect, just to get the mind spinning differently.  It's like rotating the tires on your brain.

www.duolingo.com

Nifty concept - teaching people to at least be able to read/translate and listen. (speaking not so much). Boards have lots of links to other sites if you are more interested in conversation, or further your knowledge and vocabulary. Good place to get those first 2k words under your belt.

Free and they're adding new languages all the time.

/I beat through Spanish in just a few months; German currently kicking my ass. Can't wait for them to get Russian and Irish courses done (in progress). Pretty positive Hindi is in the works Dreyelle, might be a year or so.
//Did I mention that it is Free?
