My own indepth study shows that countries with a large metalcore population have a higher GDP than countries with only a large thrash metal population.

It's not metal to care about this.

It is. Some of the best modern metal is coming out of the Middle East and Asia.

I seem to recall reading that Florida had more death metal bands than any place in the US. The reasoning went that the state was otherwise so stodgy and old it encouraged a rebellious attitude in its youth.

End of the article made the point I was thinking. If you want to be in a metal band you better have at least one very talented guitarist. Rich countries have more kids in a position to become that. You can't practice guitar if even a crappy guitar is out of reach financially.

I don't think that stopped any band from trying.

In Norway and Sweden, every single person is in at least two metal bands. It's a fact. You can't argue with facts.

It's definitely just a case of wealth and most certainly has nothing to do with rates of organized religion.

Was in Agnostic Priest, Gangagar, Eldele'el-Alele, Gognog Mug Alugdug, farkface Academy, Sausage Assassin, Financially Raped, and Smugly Dismissed, to name a few. Also a Harry Potter tribute band called 10 Points to Gryffindor, and a nudist Civil War styled band called Depantsification Proclamation. Pretty much every band.

Even The Cardigans like heavy metal.

Here's a chart for you, Subby. Turns out the U.S. is the richest country in the world as measured in GDP. (I don't know what other monetary measurement you would use. Also, you can ignore those lists that count the European Union as a single country, not sure what comedians compiled those.)

Is it because they're homogenous?

Ah, another Richard Florida "study" where he quickly acknowledges that correlation != causation and then ignores that fact.

Indeed they do

I think the real correlation/causation is the number of metal fans is related to how many cool people are in the country.  The US is full of a bunch of vapid douchebags so we hate metal.

This is the perfect thread to mention Screaming Savior (song: Star of Fatality) and Al-Namrood. Check 'em. Al-Namrood faces death if exposed publicly.

Holy shiat. Thank you.

While I couldn't only listen to Nordic metal, I do love it and am glad it exists.

/I'm still too much of a thrash/hardcore fan to only embrace it.

Japan is kicking our ass right now, too. There's a bunch of decent all-girl bands over there. I can't think of one in the US.

Aldious (their old singer was better and much hotter)

Cyntia

Destrose

Mary's Blood

Rie aka Suzaku (solo artist)

Liv Moon (Japan's version of Nightwish)

You can't find good metal on the radio in St. Louis.

But I'm listening to some Sirenia right now anyway.

Orphaned Land, Myrath, Melechech, Salem, the list goes on and on. It's actually pretty big in the Middle East despite the bands getting farked with at every turn. It's even got it's own genre (oriental metal).

No, but there is a link between the ethnicity of a country's inhabitants and wealth and pretty much only white people listen to metal.  Germany is all about the metal.....The Sudan..not so much.
